Fare Well, Lois Rossten

Howdyall:

Went to Lois Rossten's memorial service in Huntington Beach today.

It was held at a Lutheran church, of which she had been a member for many years, possibly soon after it was founded.

The chapel was filled to capacity with friends, including many PSSC members of which I was probably the youngest.

Lois and her husband had been married less than a month short of 65 years.

She was 85.

I met her numerous times, and the light of her smile outshone the sun . . .

I knew Lois for 30 years and I never heard her or Kurt say a negative thing,.. ever. I'm sorry that I could not attend the service. Thanks for this post, Dave.

My wife and I knew Lois quite well. We always enjoyed her and Kurt as they attended most of the IPS Biennials - even the last one in Brazil. They also visited our place here in Hawaii. We will miss her.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

I met Lois and Kurt in 1972 when I was an undergraduate at Cal State LA. When my partner and I bought our house, Lois gave me my first palm trees and a chorisa speciosa. Over the 40 years I knew Lois we had many good times. I visited her at their home many times and the Rosstens visited me first in LA so many years ago and then they visited me here on the Big Island. I was so happy to show them my garden here. I enjoyed them at the New Caledonia, Costa Rica and Brazil biennials. In Brazil we talked about how the southern Calif chapter of the Palm Society got started. We both worked hard to get the chapter going, we talked about some of our favorite gardens and most of all about all the friends we made over the years, many gone, some still with us. We talked about trees.

I will never forget Lois, how sweet she was and how lucky I was to have her for a friend for so long.

It's always tough writing on memorial threads. I have known Lois for several decades. When most of us joined the IPS, Lois was already an important part of the organization. She was one of the first "seed persons" I knew well and distributed seeds worldwide to many palm enthusiasts. She was always a willing and active member of the Society, helping at meetings. With the asistance of her husband, Kurt, Lois assembeled a very nice garden sporting many unusual species. And, she was always willing to show it to anyone interested. Her garden was on tour for the PSSC on several occasions. I always tried to seek Lois and Kurt out at meetings, just to give her a thank you hug for all her wonderful work. I was surprised with her passing as she had become such an icon with our group. I figured she'd live forever. I send my sympathies to Kurt and their family. I will really miss her but my memories of this fine person will persist forever with me.
