Brahea armata "Super Silver"

Recommended Posts

Maybe I have been having a Rip Van Winkle sleep in but there seems to be a lot about this on the web and I confess that until today I had never heard of it!

It is described as slightly slower than the true species and unarmed.

Am I to assume from that flashy name that its also brighter?

Any guys seen it or even growing it?

Is it actually a form of Clara?

I suspect that its not all hype as respectable firms like RPS are offering it.

I think it may be a hybrid between armata and clara but it may just be a variable species. We had quite a few aramata's in 24" boxes at my work. I brought one home and discovered that it is the clara variety. Others at the nursery are deffinatly armata with very stiff fronds. The last time I was there I noticed one armata that was almost white!! No blue in it at all so I think that it is just a very variable species ranging in coloration from bluegreen, ice blue and now almost white.

Jon- It is not allied to armata other than being a Brahea IMHO. The pics I have seen of the inflorescences tell me its more allied to nitida and moorei than the other species in Brahe going by inflorescence morphology. I haven't seen it in habitat, but Richard Travis thinks it is just a silver form of nitida. Go see my pics of nitida in habitat on the Travel logs section. I saw them back in July.

I have three 'super silver' seedlings from the RPS seed.  I look forward to seeing how they turn out.  The seeds were much smaller than b. armata- maybe 1/3 the size.  So far, mine are two leaf seedlings that are still green.

Thanks guys - some very interesting and different opinions there!

I suspect the jury is still out perhaps?

Thanks for the feedback.

I also had some seed from RPS last year and thought they were Washingtonia when  they turned up. Germination was very quick and the seedling growth is also very fast so far.
