Not sure why this hasn't been posted yet, but I plan on making the trip up to Ventura to see Pauleen's amazing garden and to visit Ventura College. Hope to see you there. Here's the link:

The Gardens of Pauleen Sullivan & Ventura College in Ventura

Near the coast with the most in Ventura County

Address: 3616 Mound Avenue, Ventura, California 93003

This garden dates from the 1960s. Pauleen Sullivan, our hostess, started collecting palms back in the 1950s. Ms. Sullivan is one of the founding members of the PSSC. She has pursued her passion for palms all over the world, including in New Guinea, and the Amazon.

This is one of a number of palm gardens Ms. Sullivan established in Ventura over the decades.

This isn't one of those gardens where the signs are bigger than the seedlings. This garden is full of mature specimens, hitting their stride in the prime of awesome maturity.

The creme de la creme is a mature Ceroxylon ventricosum that towers in 40 or more feet of silvery splendor. It's one of the biggest Ceroxylons outside of South America.

If you are so jaded by a mature Ceroxylon, that you don't care, come anyway. There's a lot more to see. Like a mature Jubaeopsis caffra with half a dozen trunks.

Oh, but there's more! You might have seen that gorgeous picture of three Hedyscepe canturburyana in the palm books. They're perfectly spaced, leaves arching, a feast for the eyes. Those are Pauleen's. Come and see for your skeptical self.

These are the crown jewels in a trove of many other gems. Bring your camera. Make a happy day of it.

Food (glorious food!) can be found at various restaurants on nearby Telegraph Avenue, the main drag of Ventura. But don't linger too long. There's more to see at the next garden, followed by a PSSC meeting.

The next stop after lunch is the southwestern corner of Ventura College, across the street from Pauleen's place. This is another legend of Southern California Palmdom.

Here can be found many rare palms, including numerous Pritchardtias from Hawai'i. Come and see.

Chairs for sitting will be provided.

Please don't disturb Pauleen at her home. We hope she will join us.

PARKING ALERT! Please park your car on Telegraph Avenue between Baylor and Claremont Way. Walk to the college campus on West Campus Way.

Don't park on the college campus unless you purchase a one-day parking permit from the machine located in the parking area in the West Field Baseball lot.

DIRECTIONS From the north:Exit Victoria Street, left on Victoria, past FWY 126, turn left on Telegraph Avenue. Continue past Ventura College, make a right turn on Mills, then a right turn on Mound. Pauleen's is the place with all the palms.

From the south:Exit Victoria Street, right on Victoria, past FWY 126, turn left on Telegraph Avenue. Continue past Ventura College, make a right turn on Mills, then a right turn on Mound. Pauleen's is the place with all the palms. (Really?)
