the tallest Washingtonia robusta I have seen in Florida

Eric in Orlando

Recommended Posts

Tallest one I have seen in Florida was located in front of the old Collier County Courthouse in Everglades City, Fl. It made no sense because of lightning and hurricanes but it was very tall and skinny. County Seat of Collier County was moved after Hurricane Donna in 1960 but this palm continued in front of the building through early 90’s and then it was gone!

Here is one along Orange Ave. at the entrance into the Orwin Manor neighborhood and iWinter Park (just north of Florida Hospital and downtown Orlando). This is the sole survivor, all the others have been gone for years. I also found a photo taken in the late 1920s of this location. Construction for the neighborhood started in 1924. There are young Washingtonia in the old photo planted all along the street. I don't think the surviving palm is from that planting, probably a replacement planting from about 40-50 years ago.

Thanks for all the helpful info guys.

I got here while trying to find on google how strong is that beautiful Washingtonia Robusta I have above my head. There are strong winds from time to time over here at winter time.. maybe max is about 120kmh\~80mph so I think it should survive & not fall on my head as long as the tree is healthy.

This photo took while a thunderstorm was going on above my garden.

Location: Hod Hasharon, Israel

(Next to Tel Aviv)

Date: Jan2023 :)

Keep safe, have  great time guys.

Cheers.
