Anyone have any seeds from their purple castor? Can you confirm that they come true to seed?

Looks like fat purple Mary J.....

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

i ordered some by mail a few yrs ago & they were true to seed when i planted em in my yard. the seeds of those plants grew plants that were green,however.

the "prince of snarkness."

 

still "warning-free."

I remember you saying that. Hmmmmmmm. Well, I collected some seed from those plants along SR75 just as you're leaving Coronado, just before you get on the bridge, but if they don't come true to seed then that'll suck. I just received a seed packet I ordered online on the interweb so maybe those will work.

Garden Web has some discussion where some people had them come true and some didn't. So I guess it matters on pollination.

Those are spectacular.

They are also poisonous. Most poisonous plants really aren't that bad, but this is nasty.

Castor oil plants have lethally poisonous seeds. A couple is curtains for an adult, one for a kid. their active ingredient, ricin is a terrorist weapon. This is a link to an article about a guy who went to jail for simple possession of the poison. click here for ricin article You might want to be careful about your dogs, given what I know is some dogs' propensity to eat anything.

If the plant is a F1 hybrid, it probably won't come true from seed, even if you're careful about clean pollination.

When I was a kid, Ricinus was the coolest thing going. 10-12 feet tall in once season! From seed! Leaves 3-5 feet across. Cooler than cool! Frost killed them before they could seed.

They'll naturalize for you.

If you do get them, give us pictures . . . .
