Yellow Poinciana,Peltophorum dubium, going off around Orlando !!!

Eric in Orlando

Recommended Posts

Yellow Poinciana, Peltophorum dubium, is common in the older neighborhoods around Orlando. They are flowering very heavily and are at peak right now. This is one of the best bloom seasons I have ever seen on them, maybe the cold winter forced them to flower. Most years some flower heavily but not all. This year they are all going off. They are very visible from I-4 going through Orlando, especially just south of downtown Orlando. They are very fast growing from seed and will often flower at around 5-6 years old.

here is the whole photo album, some selected photos below;

There's quite a few trees here in San Diego, CA. Not sure if they're Peltophorum dubium or Peltophorum pterocarpum however, they're absolutely beautiful trees!

Here's a link to my Photobucket album called: Peltophorum pterocarpum: http://s225.photobucket.com/albums/dd262/Andyplantman/Peltophorum%20pterocarpum/

Well, unfortunately, Balboa Park seems to have almost all of them in San Diego Co. These are P. dubium. Were these pics shot recently, or last year? These set seed copiously; I'm amazed that SoCal nurseries haven't picked up on this tree. (OK, not really...)

There was also one (P. dubium) at Quail BG (probably still there) some years back, east of the big waterfall. I don't know how well it blooms.

I think Rancho Soledad also has a few trees in the ground of their SD Co`location.

Great pics, Eric.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

Great pics, Eric.

There's a lot more around than just in Balboa Park. Although, I do agree much more should be available in nurseries.

I believe my pics were taken in August of 2008.

All the ones around here put on a show and are still producing flowers. I was wondering if all the insects and reptiles that took shelter under and around these trees during our harsh winter and froze,may have become fertilizer any thoughts?
