12 Million Palms Wanted

Recommended Posts

I received this email from an apparent date producer in India and thought I would ask here if anyone knows if this is doable by anyone.

"i need high yield dates seedlings produced by micro propagated / tissue cultured seedlings - 12,00,000 seedlings we need this year. If you are interested in exporting dates seedlings please reply"

If you have any useful info I'll pass it along. I realize the quantity is a typo, but that is the way it was written. I assumed he meant 12,000,000 but am unsure.

I got the same email today. I thought it was a hoax so I deleted it.

Could be, but it's a lot more original than the Nigerian Prince routine - and only targeted to palm growers??? - I can think of better scams. :)

Does anyone want to do the math? - How much land would 12 Million producing date palms take up anyway?

At 5 meter spacings you would fit 400 per Ha so about 30,000ha or 75,000 acres not including any allowance for access etc

So, although very large, that is not an impossible scenario to imagine. Or is it?

Dean, the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Lanai, is almost 90,000 acres. 75,000 acres=117 sq. miles which is exactly a quarter the size of Los Angeles.

Dean/John,

As a point of reference Cubbie Station in Queensland has 33,000ha or abt 82,000 acres of irrigation land and is the largest single irrigation farm in the southern hemisphere.
