Washingtonia robusta freak

JEFF IN MODESTO

Recommended Posts

My daughter got accepted UCSB, so I was down there for spring orientation.

Saw this freaky Washingtonia robusta growing near the dorms.

It almost looks like a "grafted" palm.

Even the trunk (s) are different colors.

We have tons of Washingtonia's here in central Ca.... Never saw this here.

What would cause this?

Jeff

Maybe an injury plus years of sprinkler water caused this. The white lower trunk could be white from water too, sorta like a wood fence gets bleached out.

That's a Christmas palm, pa ruppa PalmPalm.

I've seen that occur on a few bangalows down Mount Tamborine way, just the palm going into damage control as I understand, it was hurt and it rebuilds itself.

Happy Gardening

There is one just like that a few miles from my house.

I believe if it was on a common tree it would be called a burl.

It's either pregnant or its mother was scared by a mushroom.
