This is your chance to acquire examples of one the rarest palms on the planet. There are less than 100 individuals in a very small area of Northern Cuba. Hemithrinax ekmaniana (syn. Thrinax ekmaniana - http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/synonomy.do?accepted_id=98256&repSynonym_id=-9998&name_id=98256&status=true ) is in need of conservation, now is the time for you to act and help to preserve this extremely rare species of palm.

This palm is extremely drought tolerant, doesn't mind a hurricane every now and then, can take desertish temperatures, and survived two nights of 29F this past winter in my shadehouse. This is one tough little palm. It will prefer full sun once palmate leaves begin to form and must have extremely well draining media to grow in/on.

This palm is listed as critically endangered on The IUCN Redlist. - http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/38707/0

Ok folks here's your pre-shipment update.... B)

I have received all my supplies needed to pot up the seedlings I am going to keep for future production and am going to begin the process of breaking down the community pot this afternoon. I am going to package and ship your seedlings Sunday afternoon and will ship first thing Monday morning (May 3, 2010). Many (if not all) of the seedlings have brown tipping on the leaflets, do not be alarmed by this. It is perfectly normal for this seedling. I keep these very very dry (and the flood the heck out of them regularly) to help facilitate root growth. They are not sick or damaged in anyway. I have shipped these plants numerous times before with a 99% success rate. They are extremely sturdy plants. Take extra precaution to not damage the brittle root systems. They are somewhat woody and growth can be stunted for a year or so by damaged roots. Please do your self a favor and keep these in a mostly non-organic mixture that is alkaline. These babies don't want to be sitting in wet media and are extremely prone to root rot and fungal infection. As a precaution I will dip the seedlings in a fungicidal soak before I ship.

Very soon and these babies will be in your hands!! :D

William,

Looking forward to getting these little guys. What kind of sun exposure are they getting right now and how much sun can they take at this stage? Thanks, Aaron

I would treat them like any other seedling at keep them at around 50-70% shade (currently under hazy clear plastic and burlap). I think the mostest important thing is to keep them in extremely free draining media and watered regularly (I'm watering daily).

Finally John!!! Glad to hear they have arrived. Seems a bit slower than other packages that have shipped across the pond in the past.

Arief did your package pass customs and arrive at your address yet?

Bill, sorry a bit slow to give the news to you ..

Packages can escape from the customs on the day you send email, and I've potted up all.

A very good package and all the babies look fresh. Thank you Bill and I wait for other special offers from you.

Thanks again.

Warm Regards,

Arief
