Jamaican Talls

A few year-end pictures of some Jamaican Talls around the beach. These pictures were taken on Dec. 29, 2009 after a cool front past. I have one shot where you can see the Gulfstream:

All over the road:

These are some tall ones near a Co-op:

If you look out ,you can see the clouds over the Gulfstream:

When a real cold front makes it through, you get what you call the "mountain on the stream" caused by the much higher waves in the Gulfstream, which is approximately two miles offshore.

Jamaican talls, my favorite palm tree ever. Nothing will ever beat it in my mind... Good thing Palm Beach inoculates them so you guys have them around still. I can only imagine what Florida would be like if LY never ever showed up... Also if there were no '80's freezes. There would be Jamaican talls galore!

Look at the people next to those! Man, those are big coconuts! How old would you estimate they are?

bubba,

Great pics!

Reminds me of where I grew-up, well WEST Palm Beach anyway! We used to beach dive near the Breakers for tropicals.

The reason for the mountains is with a stiff cold front the wind is blowing from the north and the Gulf Stream is flowing in a northerly direction. When the north wind collides with that water going the other way it can really stand those waves UP!!! It can be interesting how much calmer it can be on either side of the Stream.

BUBBA!~

Dang, your drive-by pics are starting to look a lot like mine . . . .

So, did you drive by Mar-a-Lago and give the finger? (Like we did back in 2007?)

Zeeth, Not sure but maybe 60 years plus.

Scott, Best explanation I have ever heard of the Mountain on the Stream as recognized by jean-bernard.Good to know you are old WPB!

Paul, Drive-by's can be crazy dangerous.

David, Thank you.

Tom,Legendeers used to climb, trim and de-coconut. They have been replaced by folks in tall buckhoists. You haven't lived until you have seen a coconut flying through the air cannonball style at 100 MPH during a Hurricane!

Michael, I bet Bermuda has many just as tall.

Mark, Sounds like a great spot!

Kris, Thank you.

Dave, I pulled up, the doors opened and the Donald gave me the high one:

60 years, wow... Well, if my talls don't all succumb to LY, this means I may see them that tall in my lifetime! I like that picture in that post btw. I like the look where it looks like it grew straight up for a while, but got bent over and they get the angle like that. Very cool
