Epic, Got to plead with you to get rid of the chainsaw. That is one beautiful Veithchia, which I did not know grew well in California.

What you look for is what is looking

I only know one palm grower extraordinaire who has spent a lot of time in all three areas. And he has been conspicuously absent in this thread. Bo's a smart guy, and that's the same reason you won't get my vote on record either. :)

Yes, but looking at the bottom I see he's reading/read this thread! :D

Hi Bo!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

"The great workman of nature is time."   ,  "Genius is nothing but a great aptitude for patience."

-George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon-

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Now, let's get this straight.......

If you live in HI, FL, or SoCal, you are in ther top three spots to grow palms........

If it was easy, it would be boring........

I have put together a list of palms tht may or not make it in my are (marginal 9b in NorCal) that if I had the space, I would still be crowded on my measly 8400 square foot lot (much of which is taken up by my house).

I have been to Bo's, a space that God would create if he had the money. No one can compete with perfect growing conditions for tropical palms, yet I saw no Washingtonias... (no offense Bo, you are the man...)

But for those of us who enjoy the challenge, growing palms thst are marginal is more than half the fun.

Epic, Got to plead with you to get rid of the chainsaw. That is one beautiful Veithchia, which I did not know grew well in California.

That's actually the smallest one that I have and was taken in January. There's a beautiful seeding specimen on Coronado, though not as tall. I just included this one to also show the Hyophorbe Verschafeltii which needs to be axed out of history according to my new plan of "not wasting any more time". Hey, GardenWeb says I can grow roses and tomatoes. I am all over that like a bum on a baloney sandwich.

If you're going by the number of species you can grow, I'd say Hawaii, hands down.

It lacks the extreme heat and humidity of Florida, which means you can raise Jubes, Braheas, Rhopies, etc. there. At the same time, it never, ever gets cold, ever, unless you GO up to the top Mauna Whatever. You can also raise Pigafetta, Cyrtostachys, etc., which won't make it in the long run in Florida.

Hawaii kicks [butt] for palms over the others IMHO. No question about it.

Dave:

I don't think that Florida's summer heat is that extreme, really. It's usually 88-91 F. in summer almost every day, and from 73-77 F. at night. Palms love it, although I don't particularly. Even in winter, it's 64-77 F. (northwest to southeast) anf 43-62 F. NW to SE (Pensacola to Key West.) But yes, vs. HI, it IS more variable (in winter.) Key West is pretty much like parts of HI, but then it's an Island City.

The factor that's missing in all this is humidity(this post and topic) Gulf coast Florida averages higher heat and humidity than the Atlantic side. Inland Fl bakes high 90's in the summer. Panhandle FL is like CA or SoCal.

I grew up in FL which feels(for the most part) like zone 11+ and the majority of the palm species could grow there. I've spent the rest of my life in SoCal(zone 10a) I pretty sure a Dypsis baroni can only look good in SoCal and flounder in FL but a Dypsis Cabadae would flourish in the sunshine state yet look like poo here in deserty CA because lack of humidity. Samething with Cocos nucifera - both the majority of SoCal and south FL are 10a yet south FL is full of coconut palms and SoCal has none.

Hawaii takes the cake for me - all the factors balance out like magic there. Especially if you surf AND grow palms :)

John... Since Brentwood and Modesto are in the same climate zone... and we are only about 40 miles apart... Let me offer a few palms on your list that I have tried several times without any success even in protected parts of my garden where Lychee and Mangoes thrive.

Among the "wont grow here " list are....and they die primarly because our overall winters are chilly...

Beccariophoenix madagascariensis

Dypsis lutescens

Dypsis saintlucei

About 50% of the others are borderline. I do have several in protected locations... but one hard freeze and they are gonners.

Jeff

Check out the attached 9b potential:

This is an easy one! :winkie: A short synopsis of the aformentioned growing locations.

If you want YELLOWING fronds 9 months of the year you grow them in southern California!

If you want MOSS/ALGAE covered trunks with robust green crowns, you grow them in the near perfect conditions on the wet side of Hawaii!

If you like URBAN/SUBURBAN overcrowded sprawl, with your palms (mostly frost free) you grow them in South Florida!

If you like the FREEZE-DRIED brown frond look for several years after every third winter or so,you grow them where I live in central Florida!

Having just returned from the Big Island, where I saw Trachycarpus fortunei and Clinostigma growing at the same elevation in the same town (Hilo), I must say it's hard to beat Hawaii. The Trachy barely grows year to year, and Phoenix dactyliferas don't increase markedly either. Crowns look fine, though. At a higher, drier altitude they would probably take off. Clinostigma and Cyrtostachys truck along with the 100+ inches of rain and balmy but never hot temperatures. Also saw Ceroxylons at higher altitude...That island can probably grow 80-95% of palm species.

This one was taken several years ago. Have nothing more recent. Both Coccothrinax and Copernicias do great here. Coccothrinax are (mostly) pretty fast. Copernicias are predictably slow.

(Sorry about small size - was taken with an older camera).

EDIT - forgot to mention: this is a Copernicia hospita.

Here's, what I believe, is C. prunifera happily growing in a garden south of Hilo. There are 'killer' Coccothrinax locally as well.

I wouldn't want to grow a trachycarpus fortunei in either one of those places, but in Washington state they grow to perfection.....just saying it really depends on what garden style you like the best. Hot Tropical FL, Desert CA, Temperate WA, HI cool tropical. On a side note I saw locally a nice big Bottle Palm 10gal for $50 bucks, I wanted it so bad but not in my climate.
