Got some Corypha seeds, and want to know how to germinate them.

Yes, the palms get ENORMOUS.

But, gotta sprout the seeds first.

Anyone have any experiences to share?

Hi, Dave,

I have experience with C. utan. I had my own tree here which grew quickly, bloomed and then I removed it.

I have lots of seedlings. The overriding theme with these seeds is heat and moisture.

My tree grew in the middle of a lawn. The tree rained fruit for months. Many fruit got into the root plane of the grass over time. They sprouted then, and they still are sprouting, over two years later. The lawn gets sun, of course.

I tried sprouting seed in the shade at first. Only one or two made it. Hope his helps.

Dave,

I have germinated 3 varieties of these and they are all easy to do.

You should use a deep container.

I had a good success percentage with all but lecometi which only was a few from 100 seed.

You had better buy a larger property.

Some contructive feedback . . . .

So, C's are one of those palms that sends out a deep "sinker", from which the plant sprouts, like Bizzies, borassus, etc.?

Dear Friends & lover's of the coryphan varities...

I have some good news for you all...recently i have collected few seeds from a corypha, and on closer inspection i noticed it was the one that i was in crush with..Yes,its the C.M(Corypha Macropoda)giant fan palm which is supposed to be a slight variation of the regular C.Utan.but to the best of my knowledge goes it looks very different due to its silverly white leaf like the bismarkia or a breha armeda.

And these seeds were collected in the month of Aug'08 and today when i casually checked my baggie bags placed in roof top gardens..i notice that amoung the 3 seeds placed in the baggie bag one had germinated well.

i will post stills of that as soon as i transfer those images in the days to come !

till than a teaser of the mother palm which is on the verge of collapse ! and i had gone to this place at the final stages of fruting, most of the seeds which had dropped earlier had all sent to the garbage disposal units.since i came across this place by chance, and was stunned by seeing it.

I had been seening this palm right when i was a kid,but was told that it was a borassus male form...

Okay shall we have visual of that magnificient palm...

This how they finally look when dried ! :mrlooney:

IMG_0051.jpg

Later after a week they were placed in cardboard box,and stored in a cool dry place...which were later distributed to local plant growers, nurseries & Botanical gardens free. And only 6 to 8 seeds were retained for my personal use mainly for taking stills for the thread_'Materials needed for germination'.and if possible plant a couple of these in our garden ! And a white little ball seen in the right hand side corner below is not a seed but a moth ball to ward-off any insects if any ? :hmm:

Now lets see what i have got in one of those ziploc bags..out of 4 fresh C.M seeds only one has germinate, after a span of nearing 3 months.the rest 3 seeds are still sleeping and the climate here is rainy winters...so warn air is missing in the atmosphere.so that may be the delay for the other seeds taking time to sprout..

shall we have some visuals of that !

A new ziploc bag was used to fill back the same germinating medium and the 3 non-germinated C.M seeds were once again placed in it.(Reused)

CM_1566.jpg

2 liter mineral water bottle was used to place the germinated seed, once this corypha grows big enough,it will be shifted to a big plastic barrel..till then iam keeping my fingers crossed

Hello,

First of all, I would like to thank Kris again, for the Corypha macropoda seeds he so generously sent me in September.

This is a pic of them then:

b2ewtveingpl1xdp2.jpg

As I've received one of those zip lock bags shown by Kris above, I just had to add some substrate on 25th Sept and kept them for 2 months without additional heat.

Since beginning of December, I'm keeping the zip bag heated (say from 20 - 30 Celsius) and 3 of those seeds germinated these days:

So, it's a 3 months germination period for my first 3 seeds....

Dear Simona :)

Great visuals... :greenthumb: And iam very happy to know you have become an expert in palm seeds germination... :)

And i must say out of 8 C.M Seeds used my me in baggie bags only one had germinated till now and the rest is still sleeping ! but the climate here is very eratic,it was cool & wet this winter with plenty of rainfall.hope by early summer i see more results here. And i think this palm needs deep containers, since i used the 2 liter mineral water bottle for my C.M germinated seed but the upper grouth.ie the sprout has not poped up till this day.though its alive the roots seem to have dashed the bottom drain holes and stopped any further grouth..so a word of caution to all is that i feel that it needs even bigger containers than all other corypha species that i have tried so far..? :hmm:

I wish that your Corypha's all grow into big palms in your gardens & in botanical gardens or parks in your country.

thanks for visuals,

Wish you & your family a very happy new year,

Kris :)

For the first time i have used clayee soil for this C.M palm seedling, since 90% of its habititate seems to be moist & clayee soil.So just want to experiment how this baby fairs in this kind of soil..

And according to my observation this variety seems to be the slowest of all the coryphas i have tested here in our tropical climate...the rate of seeds germination inspite of fresh seeds are very poor. And other thing is that the young spear of these are the most greenest of all the coryphas,i have ever seen ! And i have no idea when these babies would grow out putting that silver form bismarkia kind of leaves in them, which iam intreasted in.. :hmm:

Kris :)

keep up the good work ! :greenthumb: And by the way if all the seeds become beautiful corypha's in different countries,i would say i will feel as the happiest man in the world. For doing my part to their dying mother palm..

Dear Simona :)

you can place it outdoors then, since once they are pottted i place then outdoors taking full sunlight, you can see what temperatures that these coryphas are subjected to from my signature..All all the stills of the above coryphas are all growing in our roof top gardens !

And you have germinated many,so a couple of corypha's in outdoors in full sunlight will give them fast grouth rate..but does it get cold at sunset ? :hmm:

here our climate is hot through out the day & night, and through out the year !
