Dypsis Ambositra Fine Leaf

STEVE IN SO CAL

Recommended Posts

As I watch this plant grow in my garden, I can't help but notice that it more closely resembles a Ravenaea than a Dypsis. The larger ones that I've seen don't have a crownshaft to speak of...could it be a Ravenaea? Has it ever been studied while flowering? Just a whacky thought...

If global warming means I can grow Cocos Nucifera, then bring it on....

Was it sold to you as D. ambositrae - or Fine Leaf?  Do you have a pic of it?

It's very interesting that there have been reports of dypsis and ravenea having a resemblance and sometimes confusion in ID'ing - they're both from Madagascar.  Hm.

Steve, give us a picture.

If it's the plant always sold as D. ambositrae, then it's a Dypsis for sure, with a somewhat tristicious habit, and a crownshaft.

It's also got rather Dyppy recurving leaves.

I think it is a bit tristicous...

I have mine in a mass planting of 9 or 11 (can't remember) by my pool.

Also, a local nursery reports that 1 gal plants survived a hard frost, while D Baronii of the same age and in the same block of plants were killed outright. The Ambo fine leaf was unscathed.

Doesn't sound like a Dypsis...I kill Dypsis, and I can't kill this one (how scientific was THAT?)

I need to get back to trying to post pics again....maybe this holiday weekend.

This is certainly the Dypsis sp."FINE LEAF" in the picture. And it is a pretty hardy palm ,IMO.They will begin to set seed at a small size(7-8'). And it does have a crownshaft.

I went back to the pic posted by Al in Kona from the D Ambo thread from a while back...it definately does have a crownshaft. Mine aren't that size yet. Sure does have leaf structure closer to my Rav Glauca than any of my Dypsis. But the crownshaft is the killer...

Interesting about the leaf structure resembling the glauca - maybe that's why I like the Fine Leaf so much?

Steve - did I understand your post, that the Fine Leaf took a hard frost without problems?

Yes, I would appreciate it, if it's not too much trouble.  I want to keep these guys happy.  I love their look - hope we start seeing many more of them offered for sale - they ought to be used much more often.

I'm also wondering how they will fare with all this rain we're getting.  Yesterday was like a deluge with more on the way.

Lyle!

I think it was aimed at me . . .

Hmm.  Do they wear Converse in Oz?  (Why do I ask.)

Naw, Converse never dies, just needed a little change of pace.  A lawyer (solictor, barrister) shoe instead of the usual bloke shoe . . . .
