The Lyto which would not grow bigger

This is the story of the weakest of ten Lytocaryum weddellianum seedlings. In 2013 all other seeds germinated between April 01 and 26, only one small seed germinated much later on May 8 after 49 days (cf. pic #1). And this seedling N°1308 would not grow like its siblings and stayed small though it was the only single seedling which was planted since the beginning in a large Ø12xH12 cm clay pot (cf. pic #2). (The other five singles N°1301 to N°1305 had only tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots.) So I checked the roots and was very worried (pic #3). The soil mix could not be the the reason because the other Lyto weddells were planted in the same mix. So I guessed it might be tha…

Nypa fruticans in a pot
by redant- 21 replies

I know these are water lovers, would these palms prefer a saucer under the pot to retain extra water so the soil stays extra swampy? I have other palms that thrive on this situation & I killed a couple before I realized this is what they wanted.

I have these 2 large ceramic pots that I filled with regular potting soil, one has a tangerine tree and the other is vacant. I noticed that during long periods of rain they had a tendency to "flood", something that would take several days to "recover" from (which I learned was just sun evaporation). They remain moist even without rainfall or irrigation as well. The tangerine has been planted there for months and hasn't ran into any issues with root rot etc. Some investigation found that they in fact have zero drainage at all. I'm aware of some species (cyrtostachys renda for example) thriving in "aquatic" conditions, though this is a much different environment from,…

Kentia Soil

Hi all, We have a Kentia that has soil that literally dries out every 2 days. We bottom water to try and have it keep on to SOME moisture, but whenever we probe a day or two after, it is dry to the bone again. It is shedding and yellowing some bottom baby leaves. I've been made aware it's really not good to repot palms if it can be avoided, so turning to you all for advice here.. should we repot with denser soil? Potting mix 50% and perlite 50%? Or should we not touch it? Appreciate any advice, Annika

Potting up Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

I had some good root growth over the last year with my bottle palms. Time to put them into something bigger. I'm wondering if this is their last pot; it's pretty heavy now. Does anyone have any really developed bottles still in pots? Like with the really bulbous bottoms they are famous for?

Hi everybody! I have a serious problem with germination of the coconuts. Many coconuts start to rot during the germination (some seedlings survive only). The surface of the coconuts and the embryo are covered with the white fuzzy / powder mold. I realize that the germination of the coconuts from the supermarkets is often associated with a high risk of failure, but if it is possible, I would at least want to minimize the formation of the molds on the coconuts. Since I grow the coconut palms indoor (I have a large south window where I grow my coconut palms for several years), I would like to use some natural (not chemical) fungicides. So far, I've only tried potassium …

New potting mix and fertilizer?
by Grasswing- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I made a small research on Palmtalk about the potting mix people use and decided that I need to upgrade my growing medium to some decent level. Most of the time, I was using a "palm substrate" mixed with sand, but it was really hard and heavy - as you can see here: I have Brahea, Butia and some other subtropical palms sprouting now, so I realized they need some more mineral substrate. I prepared this mix: LECA (expanded clay) : perlite : pine bark : palm substrate (mostly peat) = 1:1:1:0,5 What do you think about this mix? Anything to improve, add? My other concern is, how is the best way to fertilize, and w…

Kentia Palm - spots on leaves

Hi All .... I'm new to the forum, and new to palm growing (and even house plants in general), and would like some advice. In late Sept 2020, I received by mail an approximately 4 ft tall kentia palm (technically 2 stalks) in a 3 gallon grower's pot from a nursery in CA. My new kentia palm, Sir Reginald the Green (Reggie), will be kept indoors year round here in Phoenix, AZ. The palm looked healthy upon arrival, and still does for the most part 2 months later. However, I'm starting to notice a few small changes, and would like to address any potential issues before they become larger problems. I've included a photo of Reggie just a few days after received. …

I wanted to start a topic on this for some time now, but never really got the time for it. As a working professional with two kids of respectively 3y and 4mth and a busy household, writing about my favorite palms and uploading some pictures to go with it, mostly gets last as priorities have be set. So this has been on my mind for quite some time. So what happened? Well, I was getting a little annoyed that seeds of my favorite palm species were allmost never available at the usual seed dealers, especially in the last few years. Even though I have a very nice adult plant in my living room, I felt a strong urge to germinate a batch of seeds again. I think many of y…

If you're cold, they're cold, bring them inside...

Lots of rain last week, saw there was a potential for frost this week, so I spent Sunday afternoon bringing them in. Washed pots and saucers, drained them all from being waterlogged all week, and topped up on soil for a couple. Every year I tell myself there is no more room, and every year I end up with a couple more pots... Library (only west-facing window) Bedroom (north facing) Living room (north facing) Was quite blustery last night, had some brief sleet and more rain, so I guess I made the right choice. Just looked at the weather again and we have a full on Freeze Warning tonight! (Guess I better go over to my friend'…

Fertilizer for Pots

I know there have been a lot of threads on fert, but wondering what people use for slow release when they have a lot of pots? Looking for more cost-effective solutions than Osmocote and the like, as long as they work well! Something I can buy in bulk, 50 lb bags ideally, that works well and is cost effective. Appreciate any thoughts - my container ranch is large, so looking to minimize expense if possible!

Huge trouble with my kentia

Hi there, Has anyone have an idea what could possibly happen here ? Just repotted the plant, pot was maybe a bit too big, so I've moved it to a smaller one with better drainage. But soil wasn't even too damp, no water below roots at all. Is it a fungus of some sort ? Leaves one after another are drying up like this one here. Have this plant in a west oriented room in semi-shade, so no chance for sunburn here. Can it be overfertilisation? Help

Lipstick Palms
by AshW- 22 replies

I am after some advice concerning lipstick palms. I purchased 10 of these around five months ago. They were potted by the nursery when delivered. They used a local soil combined with clay pebbles. They looked great and were growing well until around a month ago. I then stated to notice a few spots on a couple of fronds but nothing major. However in the last two weeks they have declined rapidly with about half the foliage of the plants now gone. Originally I thought it may have been a water problem (too much) as they were getting a decent water every second day, however this is consistent with the original watering routine. I tried to use a seaweed based tonic on…

The lengthy thread elsewhere on this subforum that discusses different "soil" types for successfully growing palms indoors is of great interest to me. I suspect that, like most participants on this forum, I have grown most of my potted palms in the past in media that are based largely on organics (e.g. composted oak leaf litter, sphagnum peat, composted conifer bark) with varying amounts of mineral additions for drainage (e.g. pumice, perlite, DG). Over the past several years as a greenhouse grower in northern California I have been forced to experiment with somewhat different mixes for pot plants than I use in Guatemala. Over the past two years in particular, I have…

Pygmy Date Pot Size
by RyanJ- 1 follower

Hey all, we recently bought a pot that has an 18" opening on top, and is about 21" wide in the middle since it has a curved outward shape. We bought a Pygmy Date that came in a 10" temporary planter and was wondering if our pot is way too big for this size. We could repot this in our 14" pot and buy a new pygmy that comes in a 17" planter if that's better, was just curious if there is any hope for this plant in our large pot. We did fill the pot about 1/3 with plastic bottles, then potting fabric, so it is well ventilated and has a draining hole in the bottom. Thanks!

bonsai Lytocaryum weddellianum as Bonsai
by Pal Meir- 1 follower

My 10 Lytocaryum weddellianum grown up from seed in 2013 were more and more getting too tall for my desktop, except one (N°1306c) which I had kept quite small by very brutal root pruning. (But even the other pruned palm N°1306a is growing too tall …) Now I am intending to keep my 3 one year young L batavum as small bonsai palms. First, I will keep them as long as possible in their tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots. Second, I will expose them also to direct sunlight, but watching that they don’t get burned. @Jamesasb , you have mentioned (and posted a pic) one year ago that you are making one of your L weddellianum to a bonsai. Are there already visible and positive resul…

Out of curiosity, because I store my banana plants under the house in winter. I cut the foliage off my potted majesty palms and put them under the house as well. Been since October and they are still alive and look like they did when I put them under there so they seem to be able to go dormant. Now my question is, how fast do Majesty palms replace leaves, I am trying to figure out if its worth it to do this each year if they are only going to have a few leaves by fall.

Sentimental Pygmy Date Palm problems

Hello folks. I have a bit of a unique situation that I’m hoping to get some sound advice on. So about a year ago I ordered online a young Pygmy date palm. Here’s a little background story: my father was killed three years ago and he loved palm trees and so do I. So to honor him in a positive way I decided to put some of his ashes in the pot with my new palm tree. I live in Reno NV so it’s really no easy place for a palm tree to live. I moved the palm outside when the weather wasnt extremely hot or cold but when the extreme weather hit the palm was kept inside near a window. I watered it once a week. This last fall when I moved the palm inside it wasn’t looking too g…

The downsides of indoor jungles

I have plants stacked on plants. No idea how many, in the hundreds. I love my palms and plants but it's also work. I always have weeds, and pest problems arise. And I have so many plants that I sometimes miss some when watering. Having plants underneath other plants means problems can run amock for some time without me realizing it. I also constantly burn fronds that grow too close to the grow lights. I'm currently watering once a week and it takes 20-30 minutes. Grow box gets watered daily and I have to refill the humidifier. Takes 5-10 minutes, not bad. Currently have these little white pests, there are millions. Only way I know to handle an infe…
