Lot's of Variegated Rhapis
by JT in Japan- 4 replies

There's a little flower shop in my neighborhood that always has a different palm or two in stock. I've picked up at least 10 rhapis over the past months. Today I bought two variegated excelsa's, but when removed one from its pot (to repot), I found it was actually 3 plants jammed into the sand together. So I got four for the price of two. Not complaining.

Majestic Palms in Pots
by SLUGGO- 1 follower

Hi All, I've had majestic palms in pots for a year now sitting on the balcony. They've all gained some height, but all consistently have brown fronds like the photo attached. I've used a regular potting mix and add a palm fertiliser a few times a year. I generally water once a week during the colder months and twice a week during summer. Soil always feels more on the drier side rather than soggy. I can't work out what's causing it, over watering, under watering? I have pots at either end of the house and they all have the same brown fronds. I was thinking to take them out and re-pot back into the same 400mm pots adding some wetting agent and extr…

I love Howea forsteriana (have three solitary ones), and just purchased a Howea belmoreana. I have read that H. belmoreana does not do well in containers. Is this true? Any cultural differences between the two species? Do you prefer one to the other, why? Thanks in advance.

Palm plant roots out of pot
by jeffrey- 8 replies

I have a Jade Empress palm tree. I got it a few years ago while on vacation in South Florida. It was small and bare rooted and I planted it in a pot. It has been growing fine for the last 2 years. I put it outside in the Spring and back into a heated and bright sunroom for the Winter. The problem with the palm is that the supporting roots that come from the base of the plant are out of the soil and the plant is wobbly. I tried to fill the pot to the brim with soil but the roots are still to high. I tried to wire the base of the plant to small stakes to help support it but it is still wobbly and I am afraid that if its outside and we get our normal strong thunder storms i…

Hello! I have 3 washingtonia robustas growing from seeds in 1.5 gallon pots. This spring I'm going to repot them into bigger ones. So my question is. How important to them is root damage, because some of roots are sticking out from drain holes and there is no way rather that clip them off? My 6 moths old palms and me on the picture.

Phoenix Roebellinis dying
by freddyuk- 21 replies

We bought this pigmy date palm from a local supplier as it was really cheap and looked healthy. It is around 15 years old. I have repotted into a suitable narrow palm pot and it resides in our conservatory with shaded sun (Ireland so not a lot of sun). I soon noticed the growing spikes were not moving at all. After a year the bigger lower fronds have browned off and the trunk is losing any signs of green turning brown too. The growing spikes have still not moved so I guess it was dying from day one. It has been watered sparingly to stop it drying out. Is it time to give up as I know they can take a long time to die. I have another palm which I grew from seed and thi…

Looking for suggestions for a potted plant that does well in Houston summers and it would get full sun . Doesn't have to be hardy at all as I can bring it inside for winters. Right now I have a bottle palm that treat in this manner which loves our summer heat and humidity. I really wanted a burretiokentia viellardii but don't believe it could take full sun ? I'm open to all ideas and if you have pics of your potted palms that works even better =)

My Indoor Garden

Hi! Just thought I'd share a couple of pics of my indoor gems, generally palms that either wouldn't survive or would look terrible outdoors in my climate... Ptychosperma Gracile Licuala Ramsayi Chambeyronia Macrocarpa... my favourite... survives in my garden too, but hates the dry winds... and a little Pinanga Kuhli, bottom right. Adonidia Merrilli (not a chance outdoors), with the Chambeyronia on the right Pritchardia Thurstoni Ptychosperma Bleeseri, Caryota Mitis, and Ptychosperma Elegans (at the back) Hope you like them JanJo

First Palm Tree, Need Advice 1 2

So I bought my very first sabal palmetto and it's about 3 years old, I'll be growing it inside for the majority of the time so it can get a bit bigger so no animals outside will snack on it and nobody runs over it with four-wheelers, I do need tips because I'm a bit lost so for starters I don't know if the pot I put it in was a good choice because its a very big pot and I only put it in a big pot because I thought about future proofing so it wouldn't need to be repotted for a long time but it seems to take a very long time for the water to dry out secondly I think I made a mistake buying miracle grow succulent and palm soil because it has terrible aeration so I'm not sure…

Pot insulation
by Phoenikakias- 14 replies

Has anyone else (beside me) ever tried to insulate pot walls for an optimal root growth or even to make possible such growth at all? Some palms seem very fussy about temperature range, max/min in the root zone. So, have you thought that insulation of pot walls might help keeping temperature in the root zone some how steadier? In this respect how about using pots made of polystyrene? I think they could stand the weight of a juvenile palm growing in a light medium, like the one suggested by @Pal Meir

Composting in the pot?
by Funkthulhu- 15 replies

Is anybody augmenting their pot soils with kitchen scraps? I make a lot of french press coffee and lately I've been dumping the ground right into the top of pots. While I seem to have put the final nail in the marsh-gnat problem, and the plants seem to like it, I'm wondering if there is overkill potential? Do I need to worry about acidifying my soil if I do this too much? What about fungus? I had one palm who's soil completely bloomed over with some sort of white mycelium, but it seems fine with it and has started bumping out extra spears. I've been thinking about doing the same with tea-leaves as well. And if this goes well I'm also planning to get a coun…

Separating/repotting Areca palm cluster

Hey guys! Last night I separated a few small Areca palms from a larger cluster and potted them individually. I really like it when my palms aren't super overgrown/clumped together, I keep them very trimmed back and am trying to thin out clumps so you can really appreciate the delicate individual trunks as they start to form. Pics of palm before, after, and of the three smaller seedlings individually potted Let me know what you guys think! Cheers Loch

One way to do it...or at least try...

I love Foxtails. Probably one of my favorite palms really. Not easy to get for me here in Nebraska but I have been able to buy two that I discovered at local nurseries both during the summer months. They love our summers here, hot and humid and they grow like crazy..until it turns cool in the fall and they quickly decline as they do NOT like being indoors. First one died pretty fast after brining indoors, 2nd one still alive and looks "dormant" and spending it's winter out in garage under suntube light with minimal water. So two years ago I bought some seeds and thought that if I grew them from seed and they only knew indoor environment then I would have better luck.…

Need help with this dypsis
by Alcibiades- 1 follower

One of my dypsis has a problem since last year. Some leafs start to dry out from the tips of the leafs into the middle of the leafs. I cut out the affected parts of the leafs which slows down the process. Some leafs have the problem and some don't. I have repotted the palm lately and the roots looked healthy. The palm is my fastest growing dypsis and shows no visible signs of nutrition problems. I can only guess it's a fungus problem? When the oldest leafs start to die the leafs start to show white points before getting yellow. The newest 3 leafs are unaffected so far and I think about cutting all other infected leafs. If somebody can help me it would be highly appreciate…

I told the other half that a make shift shelf in my shade house had rusted and collapsed onto an orchid. They then had to come see how I'd dealt with the problem. I had of course reshuffled pots about and filled the space with newly potted up Dypsis leptocheilos seedlings that arrived via mail earlier in the week. I was told I'd moved the cyclamen to the wrong positions and that I had far to many palms and was banned from getting any more as there is no room to walk! I guess I can only get sun hardy palms now. Any way this is what my container ranch looks like. I think I actually have a bit of room to play with. It is really difficult not to h…

Potted this new R. Baueri this weekend. Occurred to me I had some solid black poly rubbish bags about the same size as the pot on hand, so cut one to size and cut several drain holes. If the trick works in a few years time when palm is too large I just lift it out and my $100 pot is all good for another use. Anyone done this before and were you pleased you did?

Aloe Hercules

Hello! New to this..I just recently bought a beautiful 5 gallon aloe hercules. I would love for it to thrive and not kill it lol. What brand soil do you suggest I use for it? I plan to keep it in a pot for now. I've heard mixed reviews about the cactus and palm mix from Kellogs which I have. I've also heard it's best to add pumice or perlite to the mix. Also can anyone give me advice on which size pot to get? how often to water and best place to let it hang out outside? Thanks!
