Hello everyone I have a question regarding potted areca palm. My palm has developed some kind of brown and transparent spots. I am not sure what is the case. The spots are on the largest leaves, so I would rather not have them cut off. Do you know what the issue is and how to treat it?

Areca Palm Struggling Indoors

I have this Areca palm that was kept outdoors last summer in Illinois, USA. It did well and was repotted in August 2022 into a very large pot, maybe 18” diameter and 20” tall. Once the temperature started dropping in October 2022, it was brought indoors for the winter. It has been watered every 10-14 days, and given Palm Tone fertilizer twice since then, once in winter and once recently The leaves have some discoloration, which I think is just old leaves that need to be trimmed. The color looks alright, not great. But I am concerned because it shot out a new leaf a few weeks ago, but it hasn’t opened up yet. Any help would be appreciated! I think the weathe…

At local Walmart this morning and they had these little beauties for sale and couldn’t pass up buying four of them much to my wife’s dismay. Going to separate one of them into individual plants and give that a try like I’ve done with the parlor palm. Any Midwest members might want to check your local Walmart for these as I thought they were pretty expensive for what you get.At local Walmart this morning and they had these little beauties for sale and couldn’t pass up buying four of them much to my wife’s dismay. Areca Vestiaria Decline
by KingBob- 4 replies

I have a small Areca Vestiaria on my front patio that I've had more than 2 years and it had been doing fine. Beginning a couple months ago, it has been in a steady decline as you can see in the photo. Am I overwatering it, underwatering it, too much sun? We did not have a freeze this past winter where I live (perhaps some mid-30's a couple times). Any thoughts and recommendations? Thanks!

I have some seedlings of this plant, which I keep under a cover, considering it is a rainforest plant. But now that they have grown up and are running out of covers, I would like to ask if they are sensitive to humidity and can survive at 30%-40% humidity.

Attn Cat Owners
by JohnAndSancho- 6 replies

What works to keep cars from using potted plants as a litter box? There's 15-20 ferals that my mom feeds. One of them is pretty obviously sick, and keeps pooping in my spindle. I've tried placing it up on a brick wall, and it just gets knocked down. I read that cayenne pepper works, and now there's peppery turds and peppery soil kicked all over the patio. I'd really like to keep this palm outside until it's cold, but this is gross, and having to add soil over and over is annoying. It's the same cat, the others leave it alone.

Automatic Container Watering

I like to hand water but sometimes I’m not able and lately some of the palms in the cones have become extra leafy making it difficult. So I’ve been messing with some options for auto watering. These 2 different methods were fairly inexpensive to put together since its just tube, fittings and stakes. Except for the 1.5” diameter cones where I used 2 micro sprinklers. For the 2.5” cones I just poked a small hole in the 1/8” tube with a safety pin. A mini valve ahead of main connection helps to adjust the sprays. Then I just added it to the existing drip system. Anyone else doing something similar? Am I over thinking it lol? Opinions welcome.

Azamax for spider mites?
by sashaeffer- 5 replies

Anyone use this with success? I have always wanted something other than a foliage spray to control spider mites and this product can be used as a watering drench. https://www.amazon.com/d/Fertilizers-Plant-Food/General-Hydroponics-GH2045-AzaMax-Ounce/B0032JYKGG/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1544306088&sr=1-1&keywords=Azamax Currently using Avid with success it seems, but have to take palms to bathtub and wear a mask to spray them down. Any soil drench would be much easier.

Badly cut Phoenix Canariensis Please HELP!

Dear all, I found this great community by desperation! Today my father, God knows why, trimmed my two 18 year Phoenix Canariensis with a saw and this is the result. the plants live in central Italy west coast near Rome and the seaside, Zone 9b. Now at the end of July it is very hot with temperatures exceeding 32° C - 90° F This is an area where in past years this kind of palms have been decimated by red awl or rhynchophorus ferrugineus. What can I do? Thanks for helping

Bamboo Palm | First Plant

Hey folks. I am new here. I am new to plant care. I received this pretty, tall "Bamboo Palm." I have had issues identifying specifically what it is, so that I can find care tips for it. All I could really do was get a general sense looking at similar palms (cat?). I thought I was doing terribly because the car ride home stressed it out quite a bit, but its actually held up pretty well the last few months. I noticed some new leaves developing. I live in the pacific northwest. A lot of tutorials I've seen mention that one should remove dust from the plant? That seems a bit meticulous, as I don't have a traditional feather duster. The seller told me to water it once a …

Bare Root Problems
by earthworm73- 12 replies

I usually have to buy palms off of the internet if I can not find them locally . Unfortunately some online growers like to send plants bare root which I'm assuming to keep the cost of shipping down (I know bare root & mail order is tough on plants). I don't have much luck with keeping most of these plants alive past a couple weeks. Right now I have two needle palms that look awful and I've only had them about 10 days. They were sent to me with roots systems that were not very good (slightly brown, not many feeder roots and too few IMO). What do you do to bare root plants when you get them in the mail to ensure survival?

These all seem to be doing fine inside over the winter. I have watered them about two times since late November at different times based on their look and pot weight. CIDP have begun to push new growth. Windmills are happy. Hopefully after this cold snap next week they can be moved outside?
