We are new to potted Palms as we have focused on organic gardening in the yard up until now. We put in a hot tub and added some potted palms for ambiance. Suddenly all of us, especially me, are getting bitten a lot by something. Based upon anecdotal bites happening when seeing an ant on one of us and confirming what an ant bite looks like online, we are confident these are some sort of ant. I noticed tiny ants in the area (abnormally small for the typical ant around here in SoCal) and also flying ants here and there. The only thing I can think of is these ants appeared after we brought home the clearance Pygmy palm from Lowe’s (it was in mediocre shape and I’ve brought it…

Because they just fall over all the time! Easy to make from corrugated plastic vegetable boxes that your grocery store may have in the back. They're not strong enough on their own, but if you take a box knife and double the interior they work fine. Cutting hand holes to line up on the interior pieces and then taping them together improves it's strength. Cutting away the sides allows sun to reach seedlings.

Do my pots drain too well?
by JohnAndSancho- 2 replies

Piggybacking off of a thread from the main forum. Can soil drain _too_ well? I expect it from the soil-free medium my L. Weddelaniums are in (US version of the @Pal Meir mix) - but the majority of my palms are in a ballpark 50/40/10 mix of cheap garden soil/Repti Bark/LECA now. My outdoor palms are cool as the other side of the pillow, growing and vibing hard. I do worry about my Kentias though since I've killed so many - I've literally misted them and watched water come through to the saucer. As a counterpoint, I just had to move my spindle palm to the patio due to fungus gnats - I threw some Mosquito Dunks in the soil, threw it in the shower to wash the bac…

What's everyones stance on mulching for potted palms? Do you mix it into the soil blend, or do you prefer a layer on top, or both? Neither?

I'm curious if keeping soil warmer using a heat mat under the pot can help/trick your palm when they're indoors? Or would the fronds need an equal ambient temperature to make a difference?

Hello:) I'm wondering if anyone knows of some species of palms that can live in a dorm room. I want a small (probably slow-growing) potted palm that can tolerate medium-low amounts of sunlight and indoor temperatures. Any suggestions?

Dramatic Cocos Is Dramatic

We went from browning and whithering due to overwatering to, suddenly, an overnight drastic change to browning and whithering due to under-watering. I tried to make the soil drain easily with cactus soil mixed with lava rock, gave it a bigger pot, and have a grow light on it maybe 12 hours a day or so. It’s in the warmest spot in the house and I have a spray bottle to counteract the current lack of humidity. Then all this. Any thoughts?

Droopy pgymy palm
by Bawnie- 11 replies

Hi - I purchased a home 6 months ago, which came with a large, beautiful pygmy date palm in the living room. I followed the previous owner's advice: I maintained the water level in the self-watering canister between the two red lines. Recently (in the last 2 months), I also started using Palm Focus in every other watering. In the last few weeks the plant has started to droop. There are some dry leaves, but I assume those are normal and need to be pruned at some point. Rather, my concern is that some of the healthy looking leaves also began to droop on the left side of the plant, and they fell off easily when touched. The left side of the plant now looks a b…

Drowning in a Giant Pot

I noticed in another stream that juvenile palms and other plants get dead from too big of a pot, for some reason. How does this happen. Why does too much pot lead to death. I would think you could still give enough water and....oh....thats it. I think the roots aren't clearing the well watered pot quick enough, and so it has a tendency to not dry out quick enough, and literally "drown" in too big a pot with to high water content. Any other thoughts or theories are welcome of course, as to the negative impact of a too-big pot.

Dumb LED Lighting Question
by JohnAndSancho- 0 replies

So I bought these shelves, it's a 5 tier 6ft wire rack and I figured it'd be a good spot to put a bunch of 4-6" pots. Also bought what's basically lamp cords with switches for some LED grow bulbs, GE BR30s I bought during COVID. Anyway, my question. What distance would constitute "full sun?" Like the bulb 6" overhead? 12"? I don't wanna cook anything.

Dumb Lighting Question/Palm Recommendations

So, I have a largeish south facing window in my office. I'm sure the glass has at least some degree of UV protection since the building was built in 2018. There is no shade. Would this be considered full sun? Also open to suggestions on seedlings I could stick in the window. I've got some year or so old A. Tuckerii seedlings that have been on my patio I could bring to work, but I'd like to fill the windowsill. I cooked some d. Lutescens and an Aloe Vera just to give y'all an idea of how much sun this window gets. Currently battling sugar ants and their accompanying aphids too, based on all the little tiny sticky specks I see on everything other than the snake…

dumb question about pot holes
by miamicuse- 4 replies
- 1.3k views
OK this may be a very dumb question so please excuse my ignorance. I have always seen plastic nursery pots with holes at the bottom. Sometimes one single hole in the middle, sometimes three or more at the bottom or right at the edge. I bought a new plant last week from a nursery and it has two holes not at the bottom, but about 2 inches from the bottom along the side of the pot. I was just curious if that is something done for a specific purpose. What comes to mind is by doing so the bottom 2" of the soil will stay moist? Or if the plant roots grew it will not grow out the bottom hole but out of the side where it will be noticed?

Dying Areca Palm
by Rebeccalm- 0 replies

Hi everyone, I’ve had my Areca palm for nearly 2 weeks now and I’m lost. Since the second day being here it has just declined. the leaves at first started becoming brittle and dry and now a lot have brown and yellow spotted leaves. I watered when the soil dried out, I have misted to add humidity and allowed it to get a good amount of indirect light. The palm is leaning so I tied some string round the stems to try and keep it up right. I have trimmed some of the dead leaves and stems at the base but am now worried this is worse for the plant. I had a look at the roots and they look ok, slightly brown in some areas but the nurser…

Dying indoor Lady Palm

This palm has been struggling inside for over a year now. I have new African violet potting mix for it but I read you shouldn’t repot if the plant is in distress. I was away for two weeks and I don’t think my house sitter took proper care of it. I’ve been trying to rehab it since. It has plenty of indirect sunlight and water (not too much). I mist it, I clean off its leaves, I tried 9-8-7 fertilizer on its “sibling” and it did not make it (same age, same nursery, same size). I live in 9B and I’m thinking about planting it outside to save it. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dying Washingtonias
by Reynevan- 7 replies

Hi there, I sow about 20 seeds of Washingtonia palms ( don't know whether it was Robusta or Filifera) in October. Everything was just fine for a first month. Now its January and they are dying. They still have one slender leaf, comparing to Date Palms sow in July, they are maybe 1/5 leaf size. Also they have brownish wither leaf ends. I dig a hole in the soil today and i found out that Washingtonia seeds were eaten by these flying pests. Date palms still have attached seeds, but they seems to be empty. Washingtonias has a hole in them, like it was eaten, and they are totally empty, it's just the outer shell that left. Does that affect they growth ? I know that they …

Dypsis (?) potted inflorescence/seed stalk
by Funkthulhu- 13 replies

I've had palms in pots for about 10 years now, and I've never had one flower for me. Now I have this pot in my office and it has put out about a half dozen of these stalks in the last few months. Now, when I bought this it was labeled as a Dysis lutescens. But, now that it's popping these out I can't find a picture online to match it. My questions are these: 1. Is this actually a D. Lutey? 2. Are these mature seeds? (i.e. will they germinate) If no to #1, what do I have?

Dypsis cabadae slow growth problem
by Davidl- 0 replies

I have some Dypsis cabadae in one gallon pots for approximately three years. They seem very slow growing having only produced one frond in a year. Some of the new fronds are stunted similar to boron deficiency. I have them in some miracle grow potting soil with a little sand added to keep the pot from falling over. I water them everyday when they don’t get rain and they are in partial sun and color is dark green. I fertilized three times this year but nothing has gotten better with them. Any suggestions?
