Hello my fellow palm lovers! It’s been quite a while and I’m exited to be back. I’ve been very busy over the summer with my family, so all the traveling and everything is finally over. Anyways, after a while new fronds on my sago “palm”, ( I hate calling it a palm, because it’s now) has finally started developing. And they are looking nice. Sadly my date palms died so I’m growing new ones. Also if any of you care I’ve made a yt channel. It’s @jakesplants on YouTube. Looking forward to more post's from me

Hello everyone, My cycas which has recently been planted (used a liquid palm tree specific fertiliser when i planted) has had an issue with some "rust" like effect on leaves. Plant has sustained some heat as temps were over 35 here but don't know if this is related to heat or something else. Any help would be appreciated.

Cyphophoenix Elegans indoors in pot?
by smithgn- 2 replies
Hello everyone, I bought this Cyphophoenix Elegans over a year ago from Floribunda with no plans of putting it in ground; but I did keep it outside with my chamaedoreas in part sun during the summer. Even in part sun, the cyphophoenix couldn't take our extreme heat and humidity despite being watered frequently. The tips of the leaves dried out and by fall, the palm was clinging on to life when I decided to bring it indoors to my bathroom. Since it's been in my bathroom, it's shot out two new fronds and is making a comeback despite the very limited artificial light. Because of this and the fact that I'll never put it in ground outdoors, Ive thought about moving it i…

Hi - I am having ongoing challenges with my potted lipsticks. I have 14 in total, but some are more impacted than others. The foliage appears very light compared to the dark green that they used to be. Additionally, some are producing fronds that are stunted and some of the really bad ones appear "burnt". I have been fertilising every 6 months with Scotts Osmocote, which indicates that it is suitable for palms. I have also given them a handful of Blood n Bone a few months ago, but they have not improved. Last year I have issues with Mealy, Mites and Sooty Mould, but that has now been resolved. I can't see any obvious signs of pests. We live in Singapore so the c…

I tried twice to grow from seed Cyrtostachys Renda and Areca Vestiaria Maroon. They germinated very well. They grew very well for about 5 months. Then, they started to get burned tips (especially C. Renda) and spots on leaf (especially A. Vestiaria) and little by little, all of them died. Each try, same result. I suspect that I did something wrong with the soil. Everybody told me to increase humidity, I did it and they died faster. I repeat, died faster. Areca is definitely a faster grower than C. Renda and in my opinion, it looks better. I would like to try again to grow them from seed. What soil would you use for these species? Thanks. Cyrtostachys Renda …

Cyrtostachys renda indoors 1 2 3

I haven't got one yet, but I'm thinking about getting a Cyrtostachys renda seedling to grow in a pot outside and take it in for the winter. Should I only take it in when temps get below 50, and back out as soon as it heats up, or should I just take it in all winter? How much sun, how much water, will it even survive long with the low indoor humidity? Thanks, Keith

Cyrtostachys renda Problems
by AshW- 13 replies

Hi Guys, I thought I was getting on top of the problems with my lipstick palms, but they seem to be struggling again. After around 6 months of no problems, I noticed a few of the fronds on one palm has started to dry up. Seemed like it is starting at the tip of the fronds and working the way down. I gave one a little "tug" and it pulled completely out. The bottom was brown and squishy. As you can see from the photos, they are looking pretty sad. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey guys! I bought a small (7") c. renda seedling from Hawaii about 10 months ago and have been trying to keep it happy here in my Seattle apartment. It's definitely had some ups and downs but I finally have it in a setup that it actually seems to like and wanted to share it on here. It's been in this new pot and setup for approx. 4 months now and it's FINALLY starting to push out new growth. I have it potted in a 10" lechuza classico self watering planter. It's planted in a homemade pon mixture composed of equal parts white pumice, black lava rock, red lava rock, (all of these 1/4" size), akadama, and zeolite. I keep the reservoir in the planter constantly f…

Dark spots on Lipstick Palm petioles
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My Lipstick Palm has beautifully red petioles since over a year (after a long wait) and when I saw big clusters of dark brown spots on these, I first thought it was nothing (just some pigmentation): But when I checked it with a loupe it turned out a bit more suspicious. My plant book suggests it could be either scale insects or what I think you in English call just "edema" or "oedema", because small wounds have formed which when healing cause corky stuff (in my country it is called "cork disease"), and that the edema can be caused either by bugs (e g different kinds of mites or thrips) or physiologically. I've been trying to identify what it is and I wonder if anyone w…

Hi everyone, I have been growing two date palms in from seed for the last 2 years. I am based just outside Amsterdam, Netherlands. I gave a third one to a friend who lived in Portugal after it started growing a bit from the seed and it is doing great. That one has a thick trunk by now and many more leaves, which are also darker green. I have attached a photo for comparison purposes. However, my two date palms are not doing very well... The leaves have started getting brown and some have even dried out. Is it too much water? Too little water? I also noticed that small roots have started coming out at the bottom of the pot of one palm, but nothing major yet. …

So the filifera didn't make it and I thought it was a complete goner but I might of made a mistake but it was showing no signs of improvement so I hacked it because I thought it was gone but it had some green still left just a little bit but it wasn't visible to me so it way to late now if their was a chance of recovery but it had a lot of rot going on in the small trunk it had which just crumbled so this is all that left </3

Deathly Majesty, seriously...
by Dartolution- 2 followers

So first a disclaimer: I know this palm is in SERIOUSLY dire shape and probably won't make it, but lets take a look at it anyway. This Majesty, (purchased from a BB store), which is over 9 years old has been seriously neglected for the past 7. No repotting until now, no fertilizer at all, barely enough water, and placed under an old old oak tree for half the year, and in a dark basement for the other half. I've recently "re-adopted" this palm and the ONLY reason I am even attempting to save it, is for sentimental reasons. It has tried to trunk, as you can see in the photos, but now has a major case of the hand of death that's wra…

Describing palm sizes by container size
by D. Morrowii- 2 replies

I’m having trouble understanding palm sizes as they are commonly referred to by container size. I’ve purchased palms in 4” containers that were larger than ones in 1 gallon even from the same supplier. Is there some general criteria to determine what size you palm is? Or is there a good reference or book that explains maturity stages of a palm? Is it just root space or growth? Reading through the forum I’ve seen it brought up that a 15 gallon palm is a good safe size to plant out a marginal palm or that a certain palm was planted out at 3 or 5 gallons. What are some practical ways to think about this?

desert palms indoors

I was wondering why desert palms arent grown indoors more often. It seems a common problem with indoor palms is low humidity. But all that I can think of come from wet environments. Could a brahea or washingtonia do well indoors. Well not exactly a desert palm, they are related to one, the pygmy date is probably the closest and they seem to do well indoors. Perhaps the thorns or light issues are why.

Desktop Palm 1 2

Hello. I live in Massachusetts and we’ve already had some snow and 10 degree days. (Fahrenheit) I was wondering if there is a trunked palm tree that can grow in a smaller pot maybe about 8 inches or below in diameter. I was hoping to see if there was a good trunked palm species that is easy to care for and is not poisonous to dogs that can go on a desk. Maybe even on the cold hardier side. I also heard that some palm trees like buying from Home Depot or a large store that has them can bring bugs into the house. I’ve so far only seen pony tail palm trees. Completely off topic but my favorite palm tree is the sabal palm that grows in Virginia Beach or Myrtle beach. My favor…

Desperate to save these seeds!
by VikkiP- 4 replies

Greetings. This is my first post here after a nice read of several posts. My parents were active IPS members and I inherited a bag of palm seeds including Tectiphiala ferox, Sabal maritiama, Arenga australasica, Actinorhytus calapparia, Dypsis lanceolata, and Coccothrinax argentta as well as some unlabeled seeds. I don't know how old these seeds are but they are certainly not "fresh". I want to try to start at least some of these seeds, knowing that I cannot grow them to maturity. I do, however, have a 35 year old Washingtonia that is essentially a bonsai growing here in Michigan, it's only 4 feet tall and summers outdoors/winters indoors. I also grow a few var…

Dessicated leaves
by Mag- 5 replies

Help! I got my very first palm - Livistona Rotundofilia a month ago and she seemed to be doing fine until... well, I repotted her a few days ago and upon a closer look noticed that some leaves look dessicated. Also, she has a new leaf but it is growing veeery slowly. She was standing in a south facing room but in a rather darkish corner. I have moved her to a brighter spot. What else can I do? I guess she might not have had enough nutrients, the soil was very hard but I did water and misted her regularly. I love her and it kills me to think she is unhappy.
