There are 3 palms in this pot one of the latest new fronds which has been green and healthy I just noticed looks burned. Any ideas. Not enough water? The room it’s in is around 80f all the time humidity 40. It was a shade grown palm and outside it got cooked so I brought it in a month ago to recover and it had been doing awesome. It also gets misted many times a day and sometime I turn a humidifier on.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and gardening. My brother gave me two beautiful healthy majestic palms to plant inside the house - both were apparently grown in the shade. I repotted them in large 21" inch pots using organic soil and for drainage, about 3" of cubed non-absorbent packing materials. On of them is placed next to my sliding glass door (with good indirect light and the other, which is faring much better, is in a front room with much less light (shown in the small first photo) The one near the light (the next three photos) started dying immediately. I cannot tell if I am overwatering it (because I have yellowed leaves on the bottom) or underwatering it (because I…

Best small crownshaft palm for a pot that is coldhardy

Ok so wordy title but that pretty much covers it. I have a container ranch since I am in Missouri. Usual suspects like sago's, pygmy dates etc. We have a pool in full sun we like to tropic up in the summer. Would like something similar to a Christmas palm but able to take a freeze or 2 to whack the bugs before they come in for the winter. So full sun, cold tolerant and limited humidity and light for 4 months. Is this a unicorn or are there afew candidates. Don't get me wrong I love trachies, sabal and the like, but nothing says tropics like crownshafts swaying in the breeze. Thanks in advance Nate

I got a coconut palm in a pot! Help to survive sunless winter?

Hi all! I've been waiting for my local big box to bring these back; they get about 5 a year and I wasn't expecting to see them till a few months from now..... but lo and behold, the coconut palms were back this week, and so I nabbed one! I love it...... only thing is, I am battling Michigan winter. Obviously the coconut palm lives inside (!!) and we keep the house warm. The tag says it's from Florida and hardy up to something like 30 degrees f? I thought cocos couldn't go below 70 degrees f, but you know better than me at this point. I also have a humidifier that I run whenever I feel it's getting too dry, and I like the same conditions as a coconut palm, so it gets run f…

How big a palm could get in a pot?
by Mohsen- 17 replies

I was browsing for palms in pots and I saw many really big ones in pots... As I have far more palms that I could plant in ground I wonder How big a palm could get in a pot? could it get to trunk stage ? how old could it get there? Are those big ones in pot grow only in pots or as once someone from a nursery told me " growers got their roots to ground from the bottom of the pots and that's why the get that big...the roots out of pots will be cut and then the pots will be sent to nurseries for sell, so they couldn't get as that big only in pots..." ?

Show us your palmified offices!

Show us your palmy office. I cleared out lots of space from the hoarder that worked here prior to me, and I need to bring one of my Kentias and something else to at least cover the desk and file cabinet, plus I've got floor space for another potted low-light tolerant plant. For now, I've got a clump of P. Robelleini (which need split up), 2 clumps of d. Lutescens (which need repotting), a mandarin spider plant, a generic snake plant, an unidentified succulents(gift from an employee), and a money tree (that somehow has one giant mutant leaf that seems really out of place). Also looking for ideas on what to add to my own office (or to replace anything I bring f…

In the ground vs in a pot.... it's a race!

So I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about transferring a palm from a pot to the ground in the spring, and then back into a pot for winter. The question is, do the benefits of getting better growing conditions in the ground, outweigh the drawbacks of being disturbed so much (as opposed to just staying in a pot permanently). Obviously some conditions apply here; 1) clearly, if I had the climate for these plants to just stay in the ground year 'round I certainly would, so assume this is in a cooler climate, with 6 to 8 months of possible outdoor growing time. 2) some palms just do not like to be disturbed, so I won't be trying this with any of those pic…

Mixing/Splitting Liquid Fertilizer
by knell- 17 replies

I was wondering if anyone has experience with or knows if it is possible to mix your own liquid fertilizers? There are brands at the hydro store that sell liquid N, P and K by themselves (e.g. 1-0-0)... is it possible to get all three and do blends with other micronutrients? Or do the ratios not transfer like that? Im guessing it is a lot more work than ordering custom fertilizer but I like the idea of having more control over the mixes. Im sure there are organic versions of this as well? Thanks in advance.

Just picked up a 7g bottle palm
by Rickybobby- 17 replies

Today I finally got a chance to pick up my new hyophorbe lagenicalis. The health of all the palms of the nursery looked good. Too my surprise when I yanked it out of the pot to put it in something more decorative I noticed a huge amount of I think slug eggs. So I hosed them out with warm water for quite a while and I’m prettt sure I got 99 percent of them. Hopefully everything works out. For now the palm will be in my palm room for two more weeks. At that time the lows here will start to get warmer. Our days are beautiful right now but just a few odd days of high 30s are enough to keep it inside

How do you Decide, who Lives and who Dies?

I'm moving again. Finally back into a house, not an apartment, with floor to ceiling windows on the East side, smaller high windows elsewhere. However, I'm now going to be sharing space with my beloved. As much as she would probably let me, I can't bring myself to hoard all of our space with palm trees. I have all that space in front of East windows, but I also have to take into account the big pots outside that will need to come inside in the next couple months. I have a number of "winners", like my oldest palms, my dwarf date, my wild collected Veitchia, and several others that are happy and healthy. However, I also have about a dozen pots of seedlings in va…

Please recommend some palms to keep indoors

Hi First of all I want to let you know that I searched the forums prior to post and couldn't come up with threads answering my question. I want to start a few indoors palms from seed this winter. I don't want the usual suspects (P. canariensis, H. fosteriana, Washingtonias, S.romanzoffiana, P. roebelenii) I am thinking Brahea edulis for example, slow growing and likes dry conditions. What else out of the ordinary would you suggest for dry indoor conditions. I do drag my palms outside on warm winter days. Thxs Pat

I want a palm, but i don't know which one to choose. i only have 2 palms and am not very experienced with them so i am asking you what should be my 3rd. if your wondering why its in the potted palms group, its because i want a palm that can stay in a pot for several years without outgrowing my ceiling. i love royal and date palms to give an idea. (thanks very much for the suggestions!)
