Seedling potting mix

Awhile back I did some digging on this site in regards to looking for a good general use potting mix for palms. It seemed a lot of people here recommended simply cutting 50% turface mvp and 50% cheap generic bagged garden soil. Maybe I got my info crossed because I read tons of posts, but this mix seems to be fine for the larger pots that I keep outside but I've had some issues with smaller pots and seedlings rotting because some small pots seem to be staying wet a lot longer than others. Is this just because the garden soil I'm using is junk or is this mix just better for larger pots/plants? Any recommendations or tweaks anyone would recommend? I have some germinate…

Those of you who have brought your potted palms outside already; when did you do it and at what temperatures? How did they react? Any photos? I haven't dared to bring mine outside yet; max. temperatures here are less than 70F atm.

Help with licuala grandis

Hello. I live in Greece and i am an owner of 3 licuala grandis. Suddenly one of them folded 4 leaves overnight. I don't know what's wrong. Its near an east window with no strong light, humidity is at about 60 and i water once a week or ten days after i check the first centimetres of soil to be dry. Kept always humid. The only thing that changed is the weather. Its colder. But inside my home the temperature doesn't fall under19 degrees. 2 weeks ago i saw some pests on 2 leaves and i used a cloth with water and alcohol to make them go away. Since then i saw no pests again. I didn't repot and i have this plant at a perfect condition for almost 2 months untill last night. Eve…

Lipstick Palms
by AshW- 22 replies

I am after some advice concerning lipstick palms. I purchased 10 of these around five months ago. They were potted by the nursery when delivered. They used a local soil combined with clay pebbles. They looked great and were growing well until around a month ago. I then stated to notice a few spots on a couple of fronds but nothing major. However in the last two weeks they have declined rapidly with about half the foliage of the plants now gone. Originally I thought it may have been a water problem (too much) as they were getting a decent water every second day, however this is consistent with the original watering routine. I tried to use a seaweed based tonic on…

Knowing When to Re-pot.
by RobustaEnvirons- 22 replies

Recently its been brought to my attention (here on PT) that I might want to transition my potted Washingtonia Robusta into a larger pot. I have noticed that over the course of the last couple months its not really added any new leaves or grown its existing leaves any larger. I have been however, monitoring its root growth and it seems the roots have been growing vigorously but not anything above the soil. It was just humming along up it decided to focus all its growth on the darn roots! It put out a middle-newest spear and it looked like it (the spear) was going to be growing quickly, but then it just stopped where it was at. Everything looks great on my little Robu…

Thailand/Costa Rica Coconut from Store
by Dartolution- 22 replies

So on a whim, I decided to buy two coconuts from the grocery store today. One is from Costa Rica (the smaller dark brown one) and the other is from Thailand (yellow/tan one). The one from Costa Rica was dry/room temp. The one from Thailand was refrigerated with this weird plastic pop top (or what appeared to be) attached to it. (see pics). I don't have high hopes for the Thailand coconut but thought what the hell. The one from Thailand also sinks. Not sure about the one from Costa Rica yet. What do you guys think? I was going to attempt to germinate both. Thoughts? Ideas? TIPS? haha

My wind mill palms seems to still be declining. These are my two. The fronds tips keep getting brown or black, and a few are more of a tan dead look, and it gets more and more by the week it seems. Is this to much sun, water, not enough water, or a fertilizer issue? I water them every other day and fertilize every 2 months with organics. They get maybe 7-8 hours of sun a day. The soil is a well draining mix too. I am new to this, but I am trying.

Nypa fruticans in a pot

I know these are water lovers, would these palms prefer a saucer under the pot to retain extra water so the soil stays extra swampy? I have other palms that thrive on this situation & I killed a couple before I realized this is what they wanted.

Looking for suggestions for a potted plant that does well in Houston summers and it would get full sun . Doesn't have to be hardy at all as I can bring it inside for winters. Right now I have a bottle palm that treat in this manner which loves our summer heat and humidity. I really wanted a burretiokentia viellardii but don't believe it could take full sun ? I'm open to all ideas and if you have pics of your potted palms that works even better =)

I start with two examples of palms which were obviously much too long in too small pots. The first are two Chamaedorea metallica var. pinnata twenty years in 12x12cm plastic pots, and the second is a Syagrus weddelliana four years in a tiny 8x9cm clay pot:

C. elegans

C. elegans, the most underrated palm ever. It grows everywhere on earth, requires little attention, and its gorgeous. I found the one on the right last week at my local sprawlmart, removed 90% of the seedlings and got this triple. I'd love to see more. Eventually they'll go to to the garden, until then I enjoy them up close. My last dollar for scale.

Phoenix roebelenii roots
by David_Sweden- 21 replies

The inner pot of my ~2' pygmy date palm has round holes in the bottom with diameter around 4 mm. I recently discovered they are perfect for roots to get stuck in.. I wonder how you guys do with roots that stick out of the inner pot when repotting? Here is a description of repotting which I follow (search for the text "Repotting palms"). It says not to mess with the roots, just add soil all around. I used a razor blade and a small sidecutter and misted the roots every couple of minutes since it took me 20 minutes (and a blood sample) to cut the plastic pot. This also got me thinking: The winding roots at the bottom, are they alive or dead? I've read about "air pruning…

I just received 4 young Johannesteijsmannia magnifica, 2 leaves, but they just look the same like my altifrons. Is there anything different between magnifica and altifrons in color of leaves, the back of the leaves when they are young , can they be identified in this stage or only when they are older? Are there any available pictures to see the differences if there are when they are small? I hope you guys can help me out because I am afraid I got scammed

Phoenix Roebellinis dying
by freddyuk- 21 replies

We bought this pigmy date palm from a local supplier as it was really cheap and looked healthy. It is around 15 years old. I have repotted into a suitable narrow palm pot and it resides in our conservatory with shaded sun (Ireland so not a lot of sun). I soon noticed the growing spikes were not moving at all. After a year the bigger lower fronds have browned off and the trunk is losing any signs of green turning brown too. The growing spikes have still not moved so I guess it was dying from day one. It has been watered sparingly to stop it drying out. Is it time to give up as I know they can take a long time to die. I have another palm which I grew from seed and thi…

Phoenix Dactylifera seeds not giving up the goods?
by RaychHasDatePalms- 21 replies

I have previously sprouted date palm seeds with the method of them wrapped in a wet paper towel, stuck in an air tight baggie, and putting them in a nice, hot window. They sprouted beautifully! We have since moved, and I am working on the same thing now, but with a heating pad instead of a hot window. (My house is about 70 degrees at this floor of the house, so I do need the extra heat.) The only differences I can think of are that I did pre-soak the original seeds for several days or possibly a week. I forgot to soak these ones. Also, the window had sunlight, but the heating pad does not. Not sure how much sunlight could penetrate a wet paper towel, and anyway, I t…

tall pots for seedlings
by miamicuse- 1 follower

I have seen some members here grow their palm seedlings in a tall pot, I am guessing 4"X4" square pots? These pots fit nicely together in a compact arrangement may be 4 to 6 in a row that fit snug in a rectangular tray. Do those come in a set? Like 24 pots + 1 tray? I tried googling for them but couldn't find them, I probably didn't use the proper keywords. Anyone care to steer me in the right direction or a place to get these at good prices?

Hi everyone, Glad to be accepted into the forum :-). My recent adoption of a dwarf date palm tree has led me here, to reach out for your help. Originally the tree was planted on the ground before I received it, which now lives in an outdoor pot in my small backyard. The guy who supplied the tree surprised me that he could drop it off quickly on the day and was caught half-prepared. He had dropped it off without a soil bag and unfortunately had to stay like that overnight as my backyard is just concrete (with fake grass). I did as much as I could to quickly pot it on the next day with a mixture of peat, good quality soil & sand along with a 15cm/6" base of sc…

SAGO fronds curling

Hi. I realize that a Sago is not a true palm, but I'm hoping someone has experienced this. Several (not all) of the fronds are curling at the ends.....its not throughout the plant and only on one side. I would appreciate any advice. I've attached some pics to give some clarity to the curling. FYI, I'm growing 8 palm varieties grow beds (not pots), in an all season greenhouse; in a soil mix of 50% topsoil, 20% peat, 20% compost, 10% perlite; with drip irrigation. Many thanks dave

I am debating whether my Altifrons is best in a wider slightly taller pot or rather deeper and a bit wider ? She is a big lady and my treasure. She is sitting in a 1 Gallon and looks happy. But upper roots are visible on toplayer. Any tips from owners growing them in pots outside are appreciated!! See picture

What would you buy?

My family wants to buy me a gift to help cheer me up and they know I love palms. I'm of course constantly looking on Etsy and various other sites at palms because watching palms grow is therapeutic. I've got plenty in my shopping cart on various sites, but out of a handful, what would you pick? I also, as always, bounce between scientific and common names. And want to see growth that won't take years. Plants can go outside and soak up sun intermittently even during winter here. It's not Canada,.but they'll bounce between outdoors and indoors for about 4 months. Tons of indoor and outdoor humidity and full sun vs plenty of grow bulbs. Red Latania (I have a cou…
