Deathly Majesty, seriously...
by Dartolution- 2 followers

So first a disclaimer: I know this palm is in SERIOUSLY dire shape and probably won't make it, but lets take a look at it anyway. This Majesty, (purchased from a BB store), which is over 9 years old has been seriously neglected for the past 7. No repotting until now, no fertilizer at all, barely enough water, and placed under an old old oak tree for half the year, and in a dark basement for the other half. I've recently "re-adopted" this palm and the ONLY reason I am even attempting to save it, is for sentimental reasons. It has tried to trunk, as you can see in the photos, but now has a major case of the hand of death that's wra…

Palm Hydroponics
by Pal Meir- 36 replies

Some thirty years ago I had grown palms also in hydroculture. I regret now that I didn’t take more photos. I found only this one below, taken in 1986, showing seedlings of Chamaedorea elegans, Ch. metallica, Ch. seifrizii, and Caryota mitis. I remember that among my Syagrus romanzoffiana palms the only one in hydroponics grew twice as fast as the others in soil mix. I think that also Cocos nucifera will be an ideal indoor palm for hydroculture. — Please post your experiences and add many nice pics! Seven palms, grown up from seeds in hydroculture: Ch. elegans, Ch. metallica, Ch. sefrizii, Ch. metallica; Caryota mitis, Ch. seifrizii, Ch. metallica (December 1986)…

Hi everyone, I just potted up my first germinated Pelagodoxa Henryana seed; this one has been germinating since Dec 19, 2016. I have 7 more to germinate and will hopefully start a family of them. I used the potting mix suggested by @Pal Meir with slight modifications (1/2 Small Pine Bark with 1/4 Perlite and 1/4 Vermiculite) Wish me luck.

One minute they were all open and doing fine and then I checked on them and they closed up, I watered the pot and only one opened back up and the others look like a strand of grass and I'm confused what happened? Is it cause I missed a watering or something? Are they gonna be ok?

Growing in a box

My palm growing these days is very different from the greenhouse I had in Spain ten years ago. Nevertheless, I'm having some pleasing results growing in heated chamber. Here are the contents of my grow chamber, with some notable comments: At the back - 3 x Beccariophoenix fenestralis. I recently posted about these. I'm very happy with their progress. There's also a Chambeyronia macrocarpa in front of these. In the 3 ziplock bags behind I have 7 x Johannesteijsmannia altifrons germinated seeds. They've each produced a 6 to 7 inch radicle and look healthy so far. Fingers crossed! In the back-right corner - Coccothrinax miraguama. Among that lot is a sic…

Lady palm, what am I doing wrong
by SilverMissy- 2 followers

Hello, I got this lady palm for free at a garden center because of how unhealthy it was. The leaves haven't changed and I've had it for a hear and a half now. The leaves have this green-yellow look to them. I have repotted it when I got it and I made the error of going too large of a pot size because of how pot bound it was but apparently they like it like that. Anyway, the leaves have not turned that deeper shade of green as you can see in the older leaves. I've been watering every 2 weeks because of the large pot size but the leaves still look like it has been too dry from the look of the leave tips. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Any suggest…

W. Robusta large leaf troubles
by RobustaEnvirons- 34 replies

Hi everyone. Recently, my potted Washingtonia Robusta's largest leaf has turned yellow/brown. I noticed it start to fold up and compact last week. Little by little it just turned yellow and then brown. I don't quite understand it. It only has the large leaf and then an emerging new growth leaf. Now that its large leaf is pretty well toasted, it now only has the new growth. All this time it's had that leaf and it did well. Its been since August/September. I do very little to it. Since Winter began I haven't even watered it too much. Others have said to not water too much in Winter. With the furnace heat, I do water it every month or perhaps longer (a bottle of water)…

Identifying the Container Ranch 2021

Playing around with some lists. Made this one of all my pots in house. Aside from some randos I picked up in Florida and got to sprout, I have identified most all of them! Granted, I had to go back through a bunch of old message and figure out what the heck @DoomsDave and others have mailed to me over the years. But even the store-boughts are not guarantees until you see how they look when they get older. Not a long list, but pretty good for this hobbyist and his little shared ranch. Adonidia merrillii Agave americana Aloe rubroviolacea(?) Aloe noideaensis Alpinia galanga Ananas comosus Archontophoenix tuckerii (2) Caryota mitis (fishtail) Chamaed…

Dark spots on Lipstick Palm petioles
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My Lipstick Palm has beautifully red petioles since over a year (after a long wait) and when I saw big clusters of dark brown spots on these, I first thought it was nothing (just some pigmentation): But when I checked it with a loupe it turned out a bit more suspicious. My plant book suggests it could be either scale insects or what I think you in English call just "edema" or "oedema", because small wounds have formed which when healing cause corky stuff (in my country it is called "cork disease"), and that the edema can be caused either by bugs (e g different kinds of mites or thrips) or physiologically. I've been trying to identify what it is and I wonder if anyone w…

Massive Queen Palm for Chicago?
by ActualTrachycarpus- 33 replies

I was recently at a greenhouse oh an hour or so from where I live in Chicago, and found that they had a 10 foot Syagrus Romanzoffiana in a large pot. The price tag on it was only $90 or so, which is extremely cheap (for where I live at least) I have always wanted to own a large palm considering since there are no palms around where I live. I was thinking about making the purchase in mid to late April, and checked the predicted forecast online: (It would stay in the same pot until the first frost, and then I would take it to be stored in a greenhouse) https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/chicago-il/60659/april-weather/60659us?monyr=4/1/2019&view=table It says t…

One way to do it...or at least try...
by sashaeffer- 33 replies

I love Foxtails. Probably one of my favorite palms really. Not easy to get for me here in Nebraska but I have been able to buy two that I discovered at local nurseries both during the summer months. They love our summers here, hot and humid and they grow like crazy..until it turns cool in the fall and they quickly decline as they do NOT like being indoors. First one died pretty fast after brining indoors, 2nd one still alive and looks "dormant" and spending it's winter out in garage under suntube light with minimal water. So two years ago I bought some seeds and thought that if I grew them from seed and they only knew indoor environment then I would have better luck.…

So the filifera didn't make it and I thought it was a complete goner but I might of made a mistake but it was showing no signs of improvement so I hacked it because I thought it was gone but it had some green still left just a little bit but it wasn't visible to me so it way to late now if their was a chance of recovery but it had a lot of rot going on in the small trunk it had which just crumbled so this is all that left </3

I'm looking for some unusual ideas for an inside Palm. There won't be a huge amount of natural light but enough to make do. I already have the following indoors: Majesty Coconut Kentia Cat Areca Any other ideas on what I could plant indoors? I might add some UV lights to make it possible. I'm looking for something you wouldn't normally see grown indoors. Thoughts?

19yo Potted Coconut
by DesertCoconut- 3 followers

I brought my coconut outside for its annual shower! It gets dusty indoors here in Phoenix, AZ. This is my pride and joy. This palm is where my screen name comes from. I bought it from Home Depot in the summer of 2000. It's been moved around the valley from house to apartment back to house a total of 7 times. It gets so neglected I really have no idea what's keeping it alive. It's never been fertilized with anything but dirty aquarium water. I only started doing that in the past 4 years. It's never been repotted. I just fill in the top with new soil when it gets low. It sat in a dark apartment for a few years. It's almost always parked under an AC vent. It currently sits …

How many hours a day do you run your lights?
by Chester B- 32 replies

Pretty simple question, but I didn't see any topics on it. So how long are you running your lights indoors? Most of my palms are smaller ones that I am growing out that will eventually be planted outside. Primarily Sabals and a few hybrids.

Livistona dies

Hi, everyone. I've had Livistona Rotundifolia indoors for about 6 years. And now it started dying for unknown reason. The leaves become dark brown starting from its tips and die very quickly. Maybe it's a virus disease (like lethal yellowing)? Who knows how it can be stopped?

When to split up c. elegans clusters?

When should I split these guys up? I've seen this question asked before with replies like "survival of the fittest" and things like that, and I've def pulled a few dead little strugglers out - but the survivors in here are all growing like weeds and I can't help but think they'd do even better if they had more room to spread out. Would these also benefit from the @Pal Meir soil mix of bark and clay like my baby Wedds are in?

Grow lights - picture/discussion thread

Hey guys! I thought it would be cool to start a thread of grow light setups as well as just people's cool/creative indoor palm arrangements. I've installed a number of different grow lights in my place and wanted to share with you guys as well as just get a thread of pictures and discussion about what has/hasn't worked for us. I always love seeing what people do with their indoor space! Here's a list of the grow lights I've used: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1UAJP4JW5RVS8?ref_=wl_share The 75W Bozily ones are the most effective as far as par value, those are the main ones that I use everywhere. The other ones are less powerful but add a really nice ambi…

Beccariophoenix alfredii
by Kai- 31 replies

Hi all, Just felt like showing my newest aquisition; a Beccariophoenix alfredii. I have never seen one this size for sale in the Netherlands and just couldn't resist! I was participating in a locally organized exotic plant fair and decided to take a stroll along all the stands before the opening of the fair. I immediately noticed the coconutty appearance and went straight for it. Very quickly I secured this palm for 45 euro's which is a bargain in these parts of Europe. The palm came from a grower in southern Europe somewhere and as I have seen before with palms from those regions, it's in some kind of dense clayish (very heavy) soil. I plan on r…

Granted, my work area is a LOT less than ideal. Anyway, i brought the roebelenii home from my office to split it up, and good lord this is tedious. If one of these green jerks die, I'm gonna be frustrated - before I remember I'm only out $10 and ummmm I think I'm about 2 hours into this now. Good times
