Many small palms very close

I got this Chamaedora Elegans 2 months ago, about 20 stems for $4, that's not much per stem! Sorry for dragging the commonest of common palms to this advanced forum but the chain store that sold it don't have much support. I know it's a solitairy palm but I like the way it looks when there's a lot of them in one pot, also when bigger, it's like its own little jungle. It is (or they are) full of life, many new fronds already, but some stems are as small as 3" while others are up to 2'. But I'm a bit worried what will happen as it grows, since they are placed so close. Will the small ones get crushed or will they adapt? Can I do something? I'm already turning it every two…

C. Renda discolored and spots
by pantryraccoon- 10 replies

Hi, this lipstick palm has done well in this pot for the better part of a year, however has recently started getting these small brown spots on the leaves, and browning on edges of leaves, and yellowish color. It gets regular organic 2-1-3 liquid fertilizer designed for palms, and temps have cooled off some to 50's at night, but this started before the temps fell. Is it not getting enough moisture in the air? The soil stays moist to wet. Any advice or ideas? Thanks!

I need to get my potted garden off my lanai! I'm thinking of building a, hopefully simple and economical, shade house but I might need to heat it a bit during winter. Please share pictures and stories of your shade house or whatever you use to shade your understory palm or seedling collection!

C. seifrizzi winter woes
by PalmPilot- 10 replies

Pertinent info: based in Northern California, Robert has been moved (over a slow period of time) to a Westerly facing window (with net curtains) where is his about 1m away so he can get enough sun during the winter. Humidity in the apartment is about 50% which may be too low but I’ve had mold issues so I hesitate to use a humidifier, and spritz him with water in an effort to help. Hello all. I was hoping the next time I posted would be to share how wonderfully Robert my Bamboo Palm is doing with all the helpful advice given to me, but alas there are still issues. I’ve lost two stalks in the past 4 months and now am likely losing a 3rd. The first two seemed to hav…

Roots Above Soil Level

I've got four Dypsis Decaryi palms in pots and three are growing very well but one has stopped growing entirely and I think it has something to do with the top of its roots being above the soil. What's the best course of action for this problem? I've also got a Wodyetia Bifurcata that's doing the same thing and I'm just holding it up with a piece of bamboo and string at the moment.

Maintaining C. elegans

Hey palm pros! To preface, I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to keeping indoor plants. I just recently managed to kill my beautiful Bamboo palm by overpotting in Miracle Gro, so I'm really worried about doing something to create another casualty. My parlor palm is starting to get pretty big, and I'm wondering if I should think about separating the two clumps when spring comes. When I bought it about a year and half ago, it came in a clump of three. I decided to separate one of the clumps into a smaller pot, but I must have done something to upset it. The single clump never really recovered from the transplant and looked permanently sick. Fortunately, the …

washingtonia robusta Washingtonia Robusta re-potting and Root growth!

I decided to take the next step as PalmatierMeg long ago suggested and I re-potted my oldest Washy (that I bought from Nevada on ebay last August). I re-potted it in a more standardized black container, rather than the clear Powerade bottles I've been using up til now. And boy was it a job cutting the Powerade bottle down the side. I hope I didn't cut the roots up or anything while doing this. I tried to be careful but it was hard to cut and all with the roots right up against the walls. It now looks as if it did indeed need re-potting! Geez, there's a lot of roots here. There was still a lot of potting medium that fell lose though. I can now see that because I…

My local hydroponics store has clay pebbles coco coir and perlite. Would you guys reccomend this more than say a peatmoss perlite mix? If so do you just mix the pebbles in the soil so it’s all even with the coco coir etc? I want to make some changes this year to my program

Joey Palm death spiral - What's going on with the new spears?
by piping plovers- 2 followers

Can anyone tell by the photos below of the small newly emerging spear and the tall unfolding spear of my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) if this appears to be signs of overwatering or underwatering or attempted recovery of either? Four weeks ago I noticed drying older leaves and I assumed it needed water. Upon inspecting closely, I was alarmed to see that the small emerging spear was papery grey (texture almost like a wasp nest) and somewhat spiraled trying to unfurl way too prematurely. The long spear was now unfurled and spreading out to the normal diamond shape. As you can see in photos below, the 3 or 4 latest leaves still seem okay; but I hav…

Rabbits love bismarkia nobilis

So I have 2 Bismarck seedlings. Just over a year old. They have been on my outside gravel play area. I know rabbits did this they have water my wife’s precious flowers before. I’m lucky he spared me the spear other wise this plant would probably be a goner. He ate half of my other one as well but spared a lot more. Anyone else have rabbits eating there palms. See members on here said put your seedlings on the ground but all my little guys I put them on a table outside just because of this all you can see is a little spear here. A day ago there was 2 12” fronds

Does anyone have much experience for this sort of mix with palms? Trachycarpus in particular? It seems very woodchip heavy. I'll try to get a photo in a minute, but it just seems strange to me to have so many woodchips instead of soil.

Palms in Miracle Gro potting mix issue

I have planted several cold hard palms (Trachy's and Sabals in 3 and 5 gallon pots) in all purpose Miraclegro all purpose potting mix with the idea of letting them overwinter one more winter before polanting in teh spring. But I have discovered that this mix is low in potassium and some trace nutrients. Has anyone else done this and then emended the mix by adding nutrients? If so how much should be added? Or should I just find a better potting mix and repot? Thanks

Majesty Palms, my latest obsession!

OMG, I never thought I would feel this way, I love my majesty palm! Believe me, I know their reputation, have experienced it personally, have lost quite a few over the years. So today, I went to a big box store where these plants were practically given away maybe a year ago, now so freakin' expensive! May be the time of the year. I went to purchase another one but would not pay their prices for ones that did not even look good. Will try later in the year. They definitely are not the easiest palm to grow in the house, so if you're not a plant/palm NUT, choose another palm, please. I grow mine outside from May into October, then in goes into my garage until it gets too …

Brown Spots on Phoenix Theophrasti
by acaipalmseeds- 10 replies
It's been a wet year here in Michigan, so I haven't watered as frequently as I would in a normal summer. The soil drains quickly. Do these spots look like a result of too little or too much water? Bad nutrient mix? The soil is topsoil, palm soil, and some manure. It seemed to do great all winter indoors. I read on here that it is a thirstier form of Phoenix, so I have my doubts about overwatering causing a fungus.

Roebellenii with brown fronds
by BeyondTheGarden- 10 replies
It seems like I see this on a lot of Roebellenii grown in pots, but not often on the ones grown in the ground. Is this likely sunburn from a sudden increase in sun exposure, or a symptom of nutrient deficiency? I moved this plant outside this spring, it was in a west facing window with no direct sun, just grow lights prior to that. Now it gets a few hours of direct sun. Also it is in conventional miracle gro potting soil. Should I remove the brown fronds? Thanks.
