Hey y'all. Long time no post. Work and depression have consumed my life. Anyway, I know @Fusca, @Philly J, and @PsyPalm among others followed my threads. I need to make some new videos, but it gets dark at like 3pm now. Anyway, my patio squad is doing great aside from a thunderstorm blowing away all of my Chamaedorea @DoomsDave seedlings. I think I've got one, maybe 2 still alive. My Queen palm is taller than me now, and Dirty Sanchez is still going, but the petioles are shorter and shorter with each new frond. Groot Senior died, too. Indoor Squad has taken a lot of losses. I don't remember how many Kentias I had, but I'm down to 5 - and 2 of th…

Sabal minor, underground trunk.

I never really understood how a palm could grow an underground trunk, until I re potted a bunch of seedlings. Now I can see how it does it. The roots are not underneath on the bottom of the trunk. A couple were doubles too, I don't know how common that is. Probably quite common since I got two. The double trunked. Probably posted in the wrong section, but they were in pots. :-)

Can someone help me with this new palm?

I had a landscaper pot this for me about a month ago. It is already starting to show brown spots on the leaves. I don't even know what kind of palm it is, much less what kind of care I am supposed to be giving it. He said to water it for just a minute once a week. Is that enough? We have gotten rain but it doesn't get much. It also only gets direct morning sun, where it sits. This pic was taken around 11:30 am for reference.

Pygmy Date Palm - am i doing it right?

Hi everyone. earlier today I picked up a pygmy date palm on a whim at Home Depot. I'm quite excited about my new purchase, but I want to ensure that i'm not messing something crucial up and that my palm will be as happy as possible. I currently have it in the plastic pot that it came in from home depot (pic included). Do i need to transfer it to a real pot with soil and etc, or will it be okay remaining in the planter it came in? If I do need to transfer it, do any of you have recommendations for good pots? I plan to keep the palm inside all year. obviously winters in Chicago are brutal, and summers are too unpredictable for me to eep it outside during the mont…

How do I prevent root rotting?
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, As some of you may know from my other post my Pindo palm has rotted and died, the bottom half of the roots has rotted and the rot went up to the central spear. I could not save the Pindo palm, but upon closer inspection I found out my 2 Pygmy Date Palm started rotting too. Fortunately, they should be fine, I cut the rotted roots and repotted them. I know the main causes of root rotting are: - overwatering - lack of oxygen - fungi I don't think lack of oxygen was the problem in my case, because I buy soil (I usually mix half of special palm soil and half of general purpose indoor plants soil, because palm soil is pretty expensive)…

Majesty seperation

I was going to separate these majesty today into separate pots and one significantly smaller, I noticed the “soil” seems to be of peat moss or coco coir? I’m not sure what to call it, but is this fine to mix back into whatever I whip up? im not entirely sure what kind of soil these palms like, I did go to the store yesterday and got 2 big bags of sta-green tree and bush soil for drainage since it’s not as compact but do these trees like a lot of water but well drained or something? This was on of the palms I got when I got the roebellini and I haven’t done anything to it but I see some green on the leaves being sucked back down into the palm before I cut them

I would not believe it if I didn’t see it myself. Did you know you can buy rare palm trees online through Walmart! That’s right ! just go online to their website and type in palm trees. Some of the prices are way to expensive but it doesn’t hurt to look 👀. Right! There was a few that weren’t to bad of a price.

Increase drainage

My washingtonia filibustas are growing great but i've noticed the bottom half of the bags stay soggy for a very long time, Is this just from me over watering because the top inch is always pretty dry/moist after it dries or is it because drainage is bad? I would think it's fine? since they seem to be growing along with no visual issue, I've cut back on watering them though but I'd hate to have to disturb them to add more stuff to their mix

Majesty droopy after repotting
by Eric Thompson- 13 replies

Just recently split up 3 majesty’s from same pot into their own pots. I was as easy as I could be on the roots.. all new soil and parked in front of a large window. 3 days later and they are looking a darker green, the fronds are droopy and all seem to be twisting. Is this just classic shock or did i kill these things?

CIDP overpotted or not?
by MSX- 1 follower

Hello Palmtalkers! This CIDP is my first palm grown in a container that will be a nice addition to a patio, with the option of moving it inside in the winter (7B/8A zone). I need your expertise in the following question - I got this CIDP a month ago in a 3 gallon (12 litres) nursery pot. The top diameter of the nursery pot was 28cm x 26cm height so the root ball is. The roots were growing out of the bottom of the pot and lifting the entire palm right out of the pot, so I repotted it in a new 17 gallon (65 litres) plastic pot. The new pot is 50cm wide and about 22cm (8.6 inches) larger across than the nursery pot and approximately 13cm (5 inches) deeper than the root ball …

My First Coconut Palm!
by HtownPalms- 13 replies
My wife and I checked out a new to us nursery today and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were selling small Coconut Palms! Even though these are very common in a lot of areas this is the first time that I have found them for sale here in the Houston area. I know in areas where Coconut Palms grow these are practically free, but I think I got a good deal paying $25. I don't know much about Coconut Palms so I was hoping someone on the forum could help me identify what type of Palm tree that I bought. When I asked the guy working the register what type of Coconut Palm it was he said he had no idea. One thing that I thought was peculiar was that all of the palms had…

Newish windmill palm not looking great
by lonestar94- 13 replies
I recent bought this windmill palm from a local nursery. Iv had it for about a month now, it’s mostly declined since I brought it home unfortunate since these guys are pretty pricey. It’s planted in a pot that seems to drain pretty well i see water coming out of the pot within 30ish minutes. Watered it a couple time the first week we planted it then once a week after that. Iv been reading this site a lot. a lot of the post seem to think it’s root rot, I just have a hard time believing that since it’s most definitely not in overly wet soil. Any ideas or is it just bad luck? I live in zone 8 and it gets 4-6 hours of sun. Thanks!

What's best guess on low SAFE tolerance temps (excluding windchill) for these palms. Large trachy fortunei in 30 gallon double walled plastic pot with 2' trunk. (last year left outside down to 20F) 6' mule palm F1 in 15 gallon clay pot. (last year left outside to 25F) Small Sabal Palmetto 1.5' in 3 gallon nursery pot. (new additions didn't have last year)

“Winged it” with a grow bulb + C. Cataractarum

So after a ton of research, I decided to “wing it” with a c. cataractarum and a grow bulb. My living room has next to no natural light and it was killing me not having a plant in the room. I used a plug-in pendant light hung from the ceiling and a GE grow bulb with a (cheap, $20, wasn’t willing to risk this failing on an expensive palm, haha) C. cataractarum. I am seeing solid results so far! It’s been about 2 months and this thing has fought off spider mites all while throwing out and opening 3 new fronds, with two large spears about to open now. I was worried about the fronds that don’t get a ton of light, but they just keep growing and I haven’t had a singl…

Winter growing / storage

I am hoping to hear about your experiences of how to handle palms indoors during the winter. I know that even those who don't grow palms indoors year round like me, often take them indoors in the winter. I can also imagine that some are more sensitive than other. I have read that if I keep the temperature high (~22C/72F like my flat normally is), many palms might produce lanky and distorted growth. So I'm thinking of lowering the temperature as much as I can, and/or adding artificial light. One advantage of lower indoors temp would be that humidity will be a bit higher, but if it's a really cold winters day I don't think a few degrees lower will help much. I have palm…

I got this Areca vestiaria years ago as a germinated seed from RPS. It's the only one of a group that's thrived. It's always been indoors in a room that only gets morning light/heat (i.e., my sunroom faces east). Some of the offshoots from the main stem declined and I've had to spray for scale now and then, but otherwise it's done OK under a relatively low-humidity, shady, highly variable temperature regime. It's my suspicion, beyond mere acclimation, that success with certain palm genera under less than ideal [challenging?] growing conditions may be dependent on the specific genetics of an individual palm.

Best potting soil mixes
by beliz1985- 1 follower

Hi, There are not that many potting soils to choose from in this city, even store bought very well draining soil for succulents and cactus seems to cause some problems. The soil I buy contains pine bark chips, some coco fiber and peat moss. I add perlite to that mix. It seems the water drains quite fast but the main concern is that the mix absorbs a lot of water which is squeezable. I've just recently repotted Arch. Alexandrea I had bought 2weeks ago and 2 of its leaves lost the green, withered with pale green. Could it be due to the soil or something else? What would be your best well draining potting soil mix? Stuff I could get here: vermiculite, per…

Did I over pot?

My S.Romanzoffiana is shooting that new spear like crazy, her roots were ridiculous out the bottom AND the top, and she couldn’t stay upright in the wind. I know eventually they like big boy pots, but did I do it too early? @Pal Meir and @PalmatierMeg should I go smaller? My mix is very very free flowing especially with the bottom leca layer, and the terracotta is evaporating some, but i just hope there is enough air getting in there.

Potting up Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

I had some good root growth over the last year with my bottle palms. Time to put them into something bigger. I'm wondering if this is their last pot; it's pretty heavy now. Does anyone have any really developed bottles still in pots? Like with the really bulbous bottoms they are famous for?

Pygmy Date Pot Size
by RyanJ- 1 follower

Hey all, we recently bought a pot that has an 18" opening on top, and is about 21" wide in the middle since it has a curved outward shape. We bought a Pygmy Date that came in a 10" temporary planter and was wondering if our pot is way too big for this size. We could repot this in our 14" pot and buy a new pygmy that comes in a 17" planter if that's better, was just curious if there is any hope for this plant in our large pot. We did fill the pot about 1/3 with plastic bottles, then potting fabric, so it is well ventilated and has a draining hole in the bottom. Thanks!
