Root sensitivity?
by JohnAndSancho- 12 replies
What you're looking at is a mass of roots that have pushed all the way through a "self watering"/bottom watering pot. This is my queen, my Washy and big Cat palm all look pretty similar. Obviously I'm gonna have to repot these in spring - how sensitive are the roots in these 3 species? I'm gonna take my time and do my best not to hack them apart, but are any of these particularly sensitive in their roots?

Rhapis Palm needs help!!
by aieshap- 4 replies

Hey, so my palm isn't doing so well. She was repotted, into a pot the next size up from what she's in now (probably too big) and I used the indoor Potting mix I had left over. It stayed pretty moist down the bottom and she started to get a little droopy. So I added perlite and some orchid bark (guy at the nursery said it "can't do any harm"?) And repotted back to the pot it's in now. Now she's looking like she's really in need of some help. What can I do to get her back up again?? I asked the guy at the nursery for loamy Soil and he said it's usually only if they're in the ground, not in pots? Any advice is appreciated, thanks

I've had these for a few years and I thought I'd share them. I just don't know what to do with them, but at least they are happy! Maybe I should buy some fancy pots and bring them indoors. I bought these several years ago from a Chinese couple that were tenants to an empty house in Danville, CA. They had these listed on Ebay and when I saw their location- about 30 minutes away- I offered to pick them up and they accepted. They had several of these. I'm happy I stumbled on the offering. These have been just chilling in their pots for years in the shade. There's sprinklers, so thats the steady water they get. This is supposed to be a lawn area in my yard,…

I am wondering what you guys use as fertilizer and the frequenzy. Information on the potting mix would be great as well. Currently I have these fertilizers at hand. Which would be best for a potted palm with a medium without any nutrition. Liquids: Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 Liquid kelp Solids: Triple 17 Gaia green 4-4-4 organic Fish meal Bloodmeal Bonemeal Kelp Alfalfa

Grow lights

Hi I did search this forum as i need to set a grow light setup this winter for about 40 various seedlings. One thing i keep reading is people trying to grow their palms indoors so they run the lights 10-12 hours and some 24/7. I don’t want to grow my seedlings, i just want to keep them alive during the 2-3 cold months. Do i need to run the lights that long? To note in my 7b zone even in the dead of winter they go out once or twice weekly during warmer spells for 2-4 hours. They will also be placed in front of a normal sized south facing window. Thxs Pat

growing palms indoors

A question for the palm experts. I know that many plant's growth will be limited by the size of the container they grow in, is this true of all palms as well? I currently have a few palms growing indoors, that cannot survive the hellish summer we have here including a trachycarpus fortunai, Dypsis Lutescens and a few Andondia Merillii sorry if I misspelled the names....

Watering with ice cubes?

Subject came up on a Google news feed for indoor plants, not specifically indoor palms but got me to thinking about this since over watering is the #1 killer of indoor palms. I have done it with Orchids and occasionally with potted palms but not as my mainstay watering program. Anyone here that has done this long term? and how did your palms do?

Gary's Top Pot for Palm trees?

Thought I try to put some desert palms in this mix. Recipe is: 35% peat 30% Pumice 20% Perlite 10% Sand 5% charcoal Can I switch out the charcoal for Biochar? Can I use Coco coir instead of peat? Seeing this has no nutrients in it what would you guys recommend I fertilize with? Will liquid feeds do fine? I was thinking fish emulsion + kelp This is for a Date palm/Phoenix Datilfera I plan to put in a really big pot.

What to expect for Trachycarpus Fortunei growth in pot

I have a glorious and fast growing Trachycarpus fortunei, currently in good growing conditions. My question is: how tall/how big is this tree going to continue to grow if it is roughly in a pot of 5.5 gallons (~21 L) of soil? i understand to replant the palm when it is root-bound, however I’m wondering this current pot is going to yield a big tree or if it’s nearly maxed out on growing height in the current pot. Pot Dimensions: Circumference: 42 inches (106 cm) height/depth of soil: 9.5 inches (24 cm)

Hi everyone, I have been growing two date palms in from seed for the last 2 years. I am based just outside Amsterdam, Netherlands. I gave a third one to a friend who lived in Portugal after it started growing a bit from the seed and it is doing great. That one has a thick trunk by now and many more leaves, which are also darker green. I have attached a photo for comparison purposes. However, my two date palms are not doing very well... The leaves have started getting brown and some have even dried out. Is it too much water? Too little water? I also noticed that small roots have started coming out at the bottom of the pot of one palm, but nothing major yet. …

Question about Phoenix canariensis
by Lady Gaga- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi. I germinated Phoenix seeds around 3 years ago, and I have one quite big palm tree from them. But I started to worried, cause last time it doesn't grow at all and even if so, the leaves don't look like typical Phoenix leaves. I mean, they are not so sticky, not so many of them. There are big spaces between the "fingers" of the palm tree. So may question is, is everything OK with my palm tree or maybe this is some different kind of Phoenix?

How come wood is so good in potting mixes for palms?
by Palmfarmer- 2 replies

bananajssi grows his seedlings in woodchips and black gold. Around 70% wood. I tried this mix and it did very well compared to the others in compost, perlite and coco despite fertilizing them. What I don't understand is many people claim wood will lock up nitrogen when mixed into soil for some time. So why does this mix work work?

Growing Chambeyronia macrocarpa in pots?

These seem like big palms. Would they grow for any length of time potted? They’re available at Flora Grubb in San Francisco, kind of pricey so would not want to try this if they’ll be stunted/look badly. They are beautiful palms, wish I had more space to put one (or several) in the ground, but I do not. Bryan

Hello everyone, I’m new to the forum. I got this bismarckia palm just a few months ago. It is not doing very well. It grew a new frond, but it is losing all of it’s older fronds. I was hoping I could get some help troubleshooting the problem. soil: palm/cactus mix 80%, horticultural sand 10%, peat moss 10%. sun: indoors, south and west corner windows watering: once every 2 weeks. temp: 72°F What do you think is the matter with it?

Hello. I‘m busy repotting my very first Canary island date palms. I’ve potted the two smaller palms already (approx 1m tall) but have only just read about untangling the root ball. I have two more slightly larger palms to pot so advice appreciated on whether to untangle and also how much of the existing compost to remove from the rootball. Thank you!

I have an infestation of Springtails in my potted soil. I know soap can kill Springtails. I have read not to use Dawn dish soap, but I have also read that you can. I know about insecticidal soap, but 10.00 for a small container is not practical. Can anyone recommend or give guidance on a soap I can use that is safe for the palms but kills Springtails?

Been awhile since I posted an updated photo on this palm. Night time temperatures have finally been consistently in the 60 degrees F. range and the large overhead shade trees filled out entirely to provide filtered sunlight for this houseplant; time to move it outdoors for its summer vacation. Gusty winds always a concern though. Been holding off putting my Joey palm outdoors.
