Desktop Palm 1 2

Hello. I live in Massachusetts and we’ve already had some snow and 10 degree days. (Fahrenheit) I was wondering if there is a trunked palm tree that can grow in a smaller pot maybe about 8 inches or below in diameter. I was hoping to see if there was a good trunked palm species that is easy to care for and is not poisonous to dogs that can go on a desk. Maybe even on the cold hardier side. I also heard that some palm trees like buying from Home Depot or a large store that has them can bring bugs into the house. I’ve so far only seen pony tail palm trees. Completely off topic but my favorite palm tree is the sabal palm that grows in Virginia Beach or Myrtle beach. My favor…

Trachy in pot for the winter in nj (zone 7b)

Hey, I just bought a windmill palm for my backyard from northeast Ohio palms. I was wondering if the Palm would be alright with me keeping it outside for the winter and just taking it in if it got below 20f. I’m planting it in the ground in March. (picture of my new palm) Its right in front of my glass door and next to a brick wall that gets pretty warm, it’ll be planted a few feet from where it is now, also in front of the brick wall (southern sun exposure) as an fyi.

Fire Ants in pots

I know it's December, but come spring I'll have tons of little babies to pot up and put outside. Fire ants are apparently a huge issue here, I've already had a B. Alfreidii turn into an ant bed after a heavy rain a few months ago. Would it be detrimental to palms to mix fire ant poison into the soil when potting up?

Joey Palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) as a houseplant

I am pleasantly surprised with the progress of my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons). The first picture is when I first purchased in April 2017. The second picture is 18 months later - October 2018. It really enjoys the summers outdoors in New England; it is a surprisingly low maintenance houseplant during the cold months. My infatuation with internet photos of the Joey palm lead me to discover the Palm Talk forum in 2017. Forum threads on the cultural needs and member photos of successful container culture etc encouraged me to attempt growing a Joey in my cold winter climate. I have been growing Kentias indoors for over 20 years and I treat the Joe…

Trachycarpus in Michigan
by Leelanau Palms- 2 replies

My two trachycarpus fortunei (3 gallon, from Perfect Plants, arrived May 2022) have been great houseplants over one winter and thrived outdoors (in pots) over two summers up here. They have not been fussy about soil (Miracle Gro moisture control), fertilizer (osmocote plus and occasional Miracle Gro for acid loving plants), or water (wetter during summer, drier during winter). They've been outdoors from late May to October. No insect or disease issues to date. Their fronds do not like my windy location, but that "damage" has not slowed them down. Growing tropical palms in NC

Here’s a few of the tropical palms I grow here in southern NC. I figured I’d do an update/track the progress of these since it’s been a while. The double Pygmy date palm is one I’ve had for a good while and is starting to really show off a decent trunk. Should be a pretty cool specimen once it matures. The Christmas palm is one I picked up at a nursery in FL not long ago. The double foxtails are seed from Venice FL and the foxtails stay cozy in the greenhouse for winter. The pygmy date and Christmas palm stay in the garage when it gets cold and they go back outside during the day most of the time since it’s usually pretty warm during daylight. 👍🌴

So as the days get shorter and cooler, I eventually will not be able to keep my potted palms outside. I am wanting to get a smaller growing light for my potted palms and other plants as well, I was thinking of getting this one since it is a reasonable size. Do you think it will allow the palms to still grow throughout the winter well and get the light they need? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CJ98X5C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0aPVBb8YMYN3G

I’m making this to keep track and share my experience growing this coconut palm here in North Carolina. I have grown Cocos here in the past and have been a bit lazy on overwintering them but this time I plan on going all out with it later on when winter sets in. But until then i will post updates on the spring/summer growth of this palm. Wish me luck!

Hello. I live in Greece and i am an owner of 3 licuala grandis. Suddenly one of them folded 4 leaves overnight. I don't know what's wrong. Its near an east window with no strong light, humidity is at about 60 and i water once a week or ten days after i check the first centimetres of soil to be dry. Kept always humid. The only thing that changed is the weather. Its colder. But inside my home the temperature doesn't fall under19 degrees. 2 weeks ago i saw some pests on 2 leaves and i used a cloth with water and alcohol to make them go away. Since then i saw no pests again. I didn't repot and i have this plant at a perfect condition for almost 2 months untill last night. Eve…

Calamus in pots
by GrumpyGrower- 2 replies

I really miss any reliable experiences about Calamus genera. At first I want to describe my experiences. Please feel free to share yours, I think it's one of the most challenging genera to grow in pots. I was starting with Calamus viminalis seeds, germination was easy, in 30°C and it took 2 months approximately. But from some reason, I wasn't able to keep them alive for more then 2-3 leafs. Mortality was brutal, only 2/20 plants survived. Here is the "biggest" one (Calamus viminalis): In my opinion, the biggest problem came from roots. All my next attempts with this genera are only with new potting mix consist mainly of pinium bark chips with Seramis. …

What would you buy?

My family wants to buy me a gift to help cheer me up and they know I love palms. I'm of course constantly looking on Etsy and various other sites at palms because watching palms grow is therapeutic. I've got plenty in my shopping cart on various sites, but out of a handful, what would you pick? I also, as always, bounce between scientific and common names. And want to see growth that won't take years. Plants can go outside and soak up sun intermittently even during winter here. It's not Canada,.but they'll bounce between outdoors and indoors for about 4 months. Tons of indoor and outdoor humidity and full sun vs plenty of grow bulbs. Red Latania (I have a cou…

This species is not the fastest grower. The blade of the eophyll is very long and thin: 31 cm x 8 mm. After 16 months since germination the tip of the 3rd leaf is becoming visible. Below the documentation of the growth since June 2017 when I got it from @Kai.

Started both of these from seed. The one on the left was from a standard Humilis and has longer leaflets. The one on the right was from a Vulcano and really seems to be exhibiting the traits of being one. We’ll see what it looks like in a few more years. What do you guys think?

Palm “soil” for containers
by Maximum- 1 follower

I know there’s a lot of “soil” mixtures that can work well for palms but I’m afraid of the super chunky and airy mixes and/or mixes that need pH or nutritional additives to get them in an acceptable range. I want to use either: Miracle Gro potting “soil” as a base. OR Jungle Growth potting “soil” as a base. What other items do I need to encourage draining and prevent “soil” compaction? I’d prefer to use perlite as a replacement for sand cause if it gets too heavy it’ll become difficult to manage the plants. All opinions are welcome! Give me the “gritty” details! (No pun intended). By the way it’d be great if there are general “soil” recipes…

Potted washy noob in michigan

Hi all, I’m new here ☺️ I’ve always thought about having a potted palm. I saw a thread on here recommending washies as a palm that can live in a pot and handle dry winter air indoors, so I decided to give them a try since the seedlings are so cheap on eBay. I ordered three bare-root washy seedlings from an ebay seller in Nevada and received six. They arrived on a cold day in March (about 25F) with roots wrapped in damp paper towels. They were beautiful on arrival. This is how they looked right after potting. Before planting, I soaked the roots in distilled water with kelp extract. then I planted them in a mix of Miracle Gro Palm/Cactus, perlite and sand, ba…

Trachecarpus fortunei die off
by jplankfsu2015- 4 replies

I manage a wholesale nursery in northeast Texas. We grow several cold hardy palms, one of which is Trachecarpus fortunei. They seem to have a problem that I can't figure out. The frond individual leaves will start to curl up. It will then progress to browining of lower fronds and progress to the entire set of fronds. In the final stages, you can pull out the primary new frond and it smells like rotten flesh inside the trunk. I have grown this species in Floriday for many years and have only started experiencing this problem in Texas over the past several years. These plants have been grown from seed and currently are about 4 years old. Any help would be appreciated!
