Hello! I am an avid houseplant keeper and adore keeping indoor potted trees (ficus, bonsai, and fruit trees mainly), but I have never had a palm tree before. However, my coworker was at a greenhouse the other day and was offered several free houseplants, all in various stages of death. Some could be saved and others, unfortunately were too far gone. One of the plants given was a lovely Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) in a crumbling ceramic pot. My coworker brought all the plants to the office and I have been attempting at reviving each of them, but my palm knowledge is not very deep. I have been doing a bit of research and can't quite decide if it was …

Repotting a Phoenix canariensis

Hi everyone. I've had a phoenix canariensis (attached is some pics) for just over a year now. I put it in what I think may of been a too narrow pot. I've noticed it's started to have some browning of the lower fronds. Also there is a root starting to grow out the bottom of it. My questions are should I repot in larger container?, can I repot in now in October i( I live in the UK so it's starting to get colder or should I wait till spring or does it matter ?

Cat Palms Not Healthy

Looking for some advice on these CAT palms in Fort Myers Florida. They are in self draining pots and have not been manually watered since the rainy season. I fear that they are not getting enough water as they have drain holes, I placed rock at the bottom of these and there really isn't a ton of space for dirt. Although there is a water basin at the bottom that holds spare water. They get direct afternoon sun, maybe 4-5 hours. They also took on some salt water during H.IAN last year. I am finally getting around to fixing my sprinkler system so they can be watered on a schedule. I am thinking I should over water and see how it goes... The less burnt-looking one …

Good afternoon all. requesting help with my golden cane that I got from a nursery. Was pretty much just a root ball in a pot and has been going downhill since I got it home. I’ve been scared I’ve been overwatering it but I think it may have been cooked. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Added pictures now, and when I first potted it

I want a palm, but i don't know which one to choose. i only have 2 palms and am not very experienced with them so i am asking you what should be my 3rd. if your wondering why its in the potted palms group, its because i want a palm that can stay in a pot for several years without outgrowing my ceiling. i love royal and date palms to give an idea. (thanks very much for the suggestions!)

I tried my luck with one this growing season and it's doing ok but is going to need a repot ASAP. If it's just going to croak when I bring it inside I'm curious if it's even worth the time/money for the soil and new pot. Thanks

Attn Cat Owners

What works to keep cars from using potted plants as a litter box? There's 15-20 ferals that my mom feeds. One of them is pretty obviously sick, and keeps pooping in my spindle. I've tried placing it up on a brick wall, and it just gets knocked down. I read that cayenne pepper works, and now there's peppery turds and peppery soil kicked all over the patio. I'd really like to keep this palm outside until it's cold, but this is gross, and having to add soil over and over is annoying. It's the same cat, the others leave it alone.

For some time now I have been thinking about planting the seeds of one of these palm trees in a pot. I am interested in how fast these palm trees grow and how long it took for your palm trees to reach a height for example of 1 meter. I hope that there are so many people on this forum who have such palms since these ones were sprouts that I will get at least one answer per species.

Licuala Grandis plant

Hello: In March 2023 I purchased a licuala grandis seedling at the Leu Gardens plant sale in Orlando, Fl. I keep it in a Florida room where there is filtered sunlight. I mist it 3 times a week and water it once a week with 16oz water if dry. It was doing fine until yesterday where the leaves just withered together and if I pull on the top(some call it the heart) of the plant it just comes out. I believe that means it died. Does anyone know why this happened and what I am doing wrong? I also had purchased Licuala seeds from Ebay and none of those took either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I guess I have to wait for the next plant sale in March 2024 to get a new…

I have a 3 year old Washingtonia robusta palm That I will need to be kept in a pot for at least six more years. It’s about 3 feet tall and 5 feet wide ( width of crown). Currently, in a 10 gallon pot will be repotting into 15 gallon soon. Do you think it would be possible to keep in a pot for the next six or more years of it life? by the way I will plant it in the ground eventually.

Planting Palms in Pots
by Robert D. Young- 4 replies

Greetings, One of my hobbies is to attempt to grow chamaedorea palms (elegans mainly) as 'trunked' plamts. In order to do that, it's appropriate to re-pot every few years. These palms seem sensitive to soil type, any recommendations on the best potting strategy for chamaedorea elegans especially? I also have chamaedorea oblongata, but they are more generalist (able to survive a wider variety of soil options).

Kentia palms (Howea forsteriana) in Orlando Fl airport

Delighted to see the airport using potted kentia palms in their interior decor. I’ve noticed that so many places resort to the easy to find and less expensive indoor palms (which seem even less adapted to indoor environments). Sophisticated and beautiful Howeas; they elevate the atmosphere in any location.

Alternative to Turface (Mexico)

Looking online and I can't really find any at a somewhat reasonable price. What would be a good alternative to use for getting better CEC and water retention growing in Pumice? I see they sell expandable clay pellets for cheap, there is also something called Arcilla Potasica/ pottasium clay anyone know what that might be? I added a photo here of the pottasium clay:
