Improvising for the winter

I am trying to design a mini indoor greenhouse for my potted tropicals. I won't be at home during the day and with the current heating costs in Europe, leaving the heating on for my plants is not an option. I have about 20 pots and thankfully most are quite small so I was thinking of making a small indoor greenhouse which could stand on a big sturdy table. About a meter long and half meter wide. The pots should all fit on that table. I am planning to construct a basic greenhouse, basically just a box with a wooden frame and sheets of clear plastic. Over it I will hang grow lights since the light from the window may not be enough. For heating I will put the pots over heat …

Chamaedorea elegans in soil or leca?
by SkullPalms- 1 reply

Is it possible to cultivate the Chamaedorea elegans in leca? I would like to acquire this species for the office. Mostly I see this species only in soil. Alternatively, I would provide them with soil and a layer of sand on top as decoration. That should also work?

Miami Thriving Balcony Palms

Green & Golden Mayan Dwarf Palms. Have discovered a new passion for palms. I take care of them so much almost OCD. Worm castings, black kow composted manure, homemade cold pressed neem sprays, ant traps - I discovered getting rid of the ants gets rid of coconut scale protection. Have also introduced ladybugs each coconut palm has a colony of around a dozen black lady beetles!

Has anyone tried that? I am considering a DIY drip self-watering system for a couple of pots. I am thinking of a simple devide using a cord of some sort. I have seen many videos where people share successful stories but their plants are normally outdoors, or indoors but not inside a greenhouse. Mine will be inside a mini, tabletop greenhouse so evaporation will be much slower and humidity very high. Will a dripping system keep soil too wet and lead to root rot? Please share your experience if anyone has tried something similar.

Newish windmill palm not looking great
by lonestar94- 13 replies
I recent bought this windmill palm from a local nursery. Iv had it for about a month now, it’s mostly declined since I brought it home unfortunate since these guys are pretty pricey. It’s planted in a pot that seems to drain pretty well i see water coming out of the pot within 30ish minutes. Watered it a couple time the first week we planted it then once a week after that. Iv been reading this site a lot. a lot of the post seem to think it’s root rot, I just have a hard time believing that since it’s most definitely not in overly wet soil. Any ideas or is it just bad luck? I live in zone 8 and it gets 4-6 hours of sun. Thanks!

Washingtonia filifera

The bottom of a water bottle works good to keep humidity in your pot and keep it from drying out too fast. This one is a 1-2 month old Washingtonia filifera in a west-facing window. Soil is mostly coconut coir and vermiculite.

Tent Greenhouse Heating.
by amh- 4 replies

I have an 11X11, tent style greenhouse that I would like to keep above 20oF. I plan on keeping my cold hardy plants inside for frost and rain protection, but I would like to prevent the inside temperature from getting below 20oF. I currently plan on keeping a 100 gallon stock tank full of water inside, but will this hold enough heat? Any recommendations on heaters? The green house is protected by deciduous canopy. I'm in a warm zone 8A with low humidity and no cloud cover. Half full of cycads:

Office Squad Redux.... Umm advice?
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

So long story short I moved from one hotel to another, and I've got a much larger floor to ceiling window but a much smaller windowsill to plop plants into. I've got roughly a 5" window ledge now. My last job, I had filled the windowsill with mostly aloes and succulents - but since I have a much larger window I'd like to bring in palm seedlings. Window faces south and previously cooked aloe vera and formerly dypsis Lutescens due to orientation of winter sun.

Cold Weather Transport of Potted Palms
by Funkthulhu- 0 replies

Whether moving homes at a not ideal time of year, or just being a doofus and promising some of your palms as temporary décor for an event (like me), cold weather makes moving potted palms risky. Assuming you have a warm space to start/stage, and a warm car/truck/van to put them in. What's the combo of temperature and walking distance (and wind!) that you would risk your mobile forest? Assume no critically tropical varieties that drop dead if the get a whiff of 40F. Personally, I get worried if it's in the 20s (Fahrenheit) and the wind is high. I once walked a big potted ivy 20 yards to my car (covered with a blanket!) in single digits calm weather and it …

Any IPS/Forum members successful at keeping Licuala Grandis indoors in cold climates such as Zone 5a in Chicago? Would greatly appreciate advice. Mine is now sick - see photos and details below. BACKGROUND: Licuala Grandis replanted 2 days ago with Pal Meir soil mixture (Leca, Repti Bark, coars pumice since Seramis not sold here) When replanted, most of the soil around the root ball/roots was removed and it was planted in a smaller diameter pot. Roots were exposed for several minutes before being planted into your mixture. The new leaf growth has shrunk in size/decreased in width quite a bit and leaves have suddenly become drier. …

Windmill Palm Watering indoors
by Dave_E- 2 replies

Hello Everyone, I'm in a pickle. I have (8) 14 month old Chinese Windmill palms and (6) that are from 6-8 months old. It is now winter here in the PNW, wind and rain and next week we get our first freezing temperatures. No big, the palms are all inside on a grow rack getting good grow light for 10 hours a day and of course being hand watered. Our son sent us tickets to go to Hawaii for the entire month of December (Christmas in Hawaii), who could say no to that? I researched all I can about indoor watering. The wife does not want to invest in an indoor drip system, she thinks they'll be ok in the bathtub with 6" of water in it. I disagree. I would appreciate com…

Hello again, I have this potted washingtonia (please tell me if it’s robusta or filifera) which I bought about 1 month ago. I water it once per week, after the soil is dry on the surface, but no sign of growing, absolutely no movement. Is it something normal? Should I worry or do something to keep it happy?

New licuala grandis, how does she look?
by Palmistry- 9 replies

Hi!! So I have a new licuala grandis that I am absolutely in love with. I live in NYC, so I have kept the humidifier running next to her and she sits in a bright room, but receives only indirect light. I’ve been wanting to repot her with the Pal Meir soil mix, especially from what I’ve been reading on here but am anxious to do so given that it arrived only a few days ago. My plan is to let it settle in and then repot in a couple months (maybe in early June). The plant looks like it came in regular potting soil. I am posting pictures of the leaves. Overall the plant looks bright and healthy but I recently noticed some yellow spots and small brown holes emerging o…

Anyone who has experience growing R. regias from seed, how fast do they grow? Mine sprouted about two months ago, unfurled the first leaf but nothing since. The leaf looks healthy. Is it too chilly for it to grow? Outdoors temperatures now fluctuate between 14C - 21C or 57 - 70F. I put it indoors on a heat mat if the temperature drops below that. Humidity is at around 50-70%. It is in shade in a big pot and I water once a week roughly. Any thoughts?

Little Bismarck that Could
by GoatLockerGuns- 3 replies

This little Bismarckia nobilis survived Hurricane Ian at my dad's house in Cape Coral, Florida relatively unscathed, and in a cheap plastic pot! This is the scene less than 100 yards away: He got tossed around and knocked over, but was still kicking when the skies cleared. I decided to bring him back to Texas with me: I thought the fronds looked really green on this guy. I would have expected them to be more silver since he has been palmate for some time now. Does anyone know if this is normal for a typical Bismarckia nobilis of this size, or is this looking more like the "Green Form" of the species? My dad's more mature plan…

Licuala Grandis Drying Leaves
by husmenusta- 5 replies
Luciala Grandis leaves are drying. I’m giving drinking water once a week, and spraying leaves with water. I am also using liquid fertiliser every 30-45 days. I transferred the pot last march but I have had this problem only for a month or so. I even had beautiful green leaves coming out and growed after transfer but now it’s also drying as you can see in the pictures. What can I do ? Should I buy humidifier ? More or less water? Any tips are appreciated.
