Over wintering in a conservatory

Evening all After an unusually long / warm summer in the UK, the daytime & evening temperatures are now noticeably lower, that said, next week is showing a few 18C / 19C max day time temperatures. My palms are in all pots and are still throwing out new fronds, even as we head to November. I have a decent sized trachycarpus fortunei which I'm not too concerned about, given that there are a number in my immediate area that seem to cope with the worst of our winter weather (however, they are larger and planted in the ground). I also have a Butia Odorata, 2 CIDPs and a jubaea chilensis, all of which are relatively young. My concern is not so much the risk …

Licuala grandis turning yellow
by Hannah- 2 replies

Please help me to figure out what is wrong with my licuala grandis palm 😭 I’ve purchased this in July. At the beginning the tips were yellowing so I thought there should be something with watering. I water this with distilled water since then. It’s in front of an eastern window and get indirect light. Also, I placed a humidifier near that (not very close though) Recently I noticed that it’s becoming yellow/brown everywhere. I started treating it with neem oil (cause I suspect spider mites) but it’s just getting worse. Please help me to recover this beauty that came along all the way from FL to Southern CA 😭

Hi everyone, Since I'm still a beginner, I need your help. I want to repot these palms, properly identify them, which pot size should I chose for each of them, which soil mix should I use, etc. (the beer is standard 330ml just to get the real size of the palm, i will drink it later) 1. Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm) - I'm 99% positive about this 2. Phoenix canariensis or Phoenix dactylifera - Date palm? 3. Cycas revoluta or other Cycas? Except the Kentia which looks healthy, the other two have some yellow/brown leaves. Should I cut any of them? About the soil mix, will the same mix soil be ok for all three of …

I’ve read on this forum that potting soil for palms needs to drain well and have adequate aeration via not using easily compacted materials and not using materials with small particle size (which usually compact easily anyway). The main reasons are that poor aeration and drainage cause root rot and prevent nutrient uptake. I was wondering if anyone knows if anaerobic decomposition of organic material (e.g. peat moss, coco coir, compost) contributes to poorly draining soil being suboptimal for potted palms (perhaps due to decreasing ph or pathogenic microbes?). I’m curious because I’ve seen many species of palms growing in volcanic clay here on Guam and have potted many se…

Dypsis lutescens weird colored leaf?

Hi! My Dypsis lutescens is doing great, she's sprouting new leaves everyday and is growing like crazy. I repotted it in August to a bigger pot with slow release fertilizer (soil mix including lechuza pon) and she was doing great, but today I spotted this in one of the leaves. It's only one. I can't see any other issues apart from a little sunburn in a couple of them. What do you think this could be?

Potting soil
by Enar- 4 replies

Hello I mix my own soil for palms and I’ve experimented with many different ways. I’ve always had trouble with fertilizing my plants. I’ve never been very good at it. My question is how much fertilizer should I add to my custom soil mix I usually do coconut coir base which is ph neutral and vermiculite and perlite mixed together. I have Jobes organic granular palm fertilizer which contains some of the essentials like NPK + magnesium and calcium. But the directions are not very friendly towards people who mix soil from scratch and my palms look green but they seem to stay fairly small. Anyone had any experience?

I have a Pygmy Date palm in a pot and it looks to me like it isn't doing well. Fronds bend and droop down- with brown tips It gets watered once every 8 days for 6 minutes. I live in northern california- the pots do have drainage holes. I have fertilized them twice in the 3 months I have owned them. More water? Less water? more fertilizer? any advice is appreciated.

Is my palm tree dieing?
by Rookie-gardener- 20 replies

Hi, I have recently got two Robusta palm trees 3-4 ft in height from livingsocial site. I have planted them at the bottom of my garden into two big plant pots 42cm.Since putting these in a pot i have noticed some the palm leaves have split or turned slightly yellow and the palm didnt feel secure enough in the pot so i added some support by planting a stick and securing the root. My questions are. Too much water or not enough water? I water every other day depending on weather. If it rains than i miss a day. I use a watering can and water for about 5 seconds around the pot. Plant not deep enough in the pot? The plant was planted j…

Source for pots?

I'm new to this section of the forum so please forgive me for asking a dead standard question but I just bought 100 3.5" pots off of eBay and got swindled. I'm growing Chamaedorea microspadix and have seedlings in six packs now ready to pot up before the weather cools off. I know many places throw plastic pots into the trash but I was unable to track any down so I bit the bullet and ordered some from an eBay seller. They're absurdly flimsy, shallower than standard pots and nearly useless. I can delay potting up another week (temperatures expected to hit 100 later this week) but seek your recommendation so I don't wind up with more inferior product. Can you sugg…

Hello everyone I have a question regarding potted areca palm. My palm has developed some kind of brown and transparent spots. I am not sure what is the case. The spots are on the largest leaves, so I would rather not have them cut off. Do you know what the issue is and how to treat it?

Palm Fertilizer Options
by Cayman1- 1 reply

I have several potted Majesty and Christmas palms, that came with the new house, that are potted with a white rock topping. I gave them a little sprinkling of my Florikan 8-2-12 Palm Blend, but what I feared, happened. I am no expert, but I believe it's the iron in the fertilizer that gave the white rock topping a rust looking stain on them. And it is my thought that this iron is really important. LOL All of that said, any fertilizer options to keep them healthy that won't rust up my rocks? 😎
