Repotted Phoenix dactylifera Seedling
by PalmTreeDude- 8 replies

This Phoenix dactylifera seedling needed to be repotted about a year ago from the little cup I first put it in. Finally got around to it and just wanted to show you it. Grown from seed out of a store bought date and it stretched, I need to give it more sun. My potting mix didn't drain at all so I had to mix topsoil with sand.

How many gallons to water?
by adwizard- 3 replies
Hi, I just had a 16 foot silver bismark transplanted in my front yard. I was reading an article that basically said if your bismark came in a 25 gallon container, you should use about 25 gallons of water a day to keep it watered and healthy for the first month or so. So what would the gallon size of water be for a 16 foot bismark? Any ideas? It was transplanted in a well drained area and professionally installed. I've been spraying water gently around the tree and when the water starts to pool on the sand I let it seep through the sand and quit. I don't know if that's enough water or not for a tree that size. Any ideas? Thanks, I appreciate your advice.

I think somebody in my street died.. and he or she had a potted Trachycarpus Fortunei (maybe Waggie, couldn't tell, but Fortunei is more common) that likely wasn't watered for a week or two. Sad story, but since I am a palm enthusiast I am trying to save this Fortunei. Can it be saved? Here are the images: The spear looks firm, but it was completely deviolated otherwise. I cut off the brown fronds and kept the spear. I also root pruned it as I fear the dead roots could cause rot (maybe this wasn't a good idea..).

Help with a Transplanted Potted Sabal Palm :)

I already have a Majesty and Cat Palm that have been doing great so I’m familiar with the beginner species inside. I’m from South Florida and moved to West Georgia and I’m very common with Sabal Palms, their care, flowering, fruit, et cetera. But I’m not familiar with potting and am told it’s very difficult. I got back from a trip to Savannah & Tybee Island, and I wanted to come back with a Sabal Palm. I was walking in Bonaventure Cemetery, and some workers cleaning around a Mausoleum pulled one up roots and all so I took it. I’m enclosing a photograph of it in my car lol It’s older obviously as it has a trunk, it seemed a little dry so I have it in a t…

HELP ME PLEASE! DYING WASHINGTONIA BABY!
by jruffd13- 6 replies

Good Morning to all my Palm friends, This is "Mateo"Ruffner, he is a Washingtonia Robusta, he was born with a bunch of Robustas that I got from seed at the Jupiter Inlet in Florida. He was growing really well this summer outside then I put him indoors in the winter. On 12/1 I noticed he wasn't shooting up a new frond and there were a TON of little red bugs on the plant, I killed them with neem oil (but it seems like the neem was killing it and maybe making the leaves yellow). I think it was root rot because it wasn't getting enough drainage, (I was an idiot and put a lot of perlite at the bottom of the pot thinking it would help drainage but it blocked the water…

Since I never know what order my pics are gonna post in, here's some new growth photos with tags. Big Cat Garfield pushing 3 new leaves like the champ he is. Please shame me for not splitting up the C. Elegans yet because some of them are getting fat. Time to celebrate by buying some C. Benzeii and more Howeas while Jungle Music has them on sale.

Hello everyone, looking for some advise on keeping’s these two “flame thrower palms alive in the office. We keep the office temperature around 55-60° at night and 68-72° during the day. Resident of Livingston California zone 9b...they are next to a window to get some sunshine, and I do take them out for some sun if its warm enough. How othen should they be watered? Currently in some Homedepot palm mix, I added some perlite for drainage. no fertilizer added..once spring comes around, thinking of doing foliage feeding and slow release palm fertilizer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also trying to keep a Dypsis Mayotte alive in the office.

mexican fan palm Mexican Fan Palm Potted
by LOCO COCONUT- 0 replies

I collected some Mexican Fan Palm seeds in Phoenix Arizona last year. I was not expecting much but I put them in some soil and waited for anything. They sprouted sure enough and here is my biggest one. I have been growing this palm since January of this year. It is now almost a year old and the leaves are starting to become jagged.

Anyone else have a jungle inside?

Last winter there was a bunch of other filler plants in here too. Now this entire room is stuffed with nothing but palms, a little line of cactuses on the window sill and the 2 bigger cactus on the side yes. The shelves of seedlings is out of control, all of this outside is one thing, stuffed into the same room is eye opening. Won’t be able to do this another year, seriously have to get this greenhouse finished by this time next year. Definitely a cool spot to hangout in during the winter.

How many hours a day do you run your lights?
by Chester B- 32 replies

Pretty simple question, but I didn't see any topics on it. So how long are you running your lights indoors? Most of my palms are smaller ones that I am growing out that will eventually be planted outside. Primarily Sabals and a few hybrids.

Growing Bismarkia in a very large container?
by NorCalWill- 7 replies

Has anyone had luck growing Bismarkia long term in a giant pot or raised planter box? I've heard they have a very deep tap root, but would a 24" deep x 5' square container work? Guess there's just one way to find out...

From Picked Chinese Fan Palm Seed to 14 months of Growing
by orlandozone9b- 4 replies

In October of 2021 I picked around 10 very unripe Chinese Fan Palm Seeds from a family members home. I then placed all in a ziplock bag in wet paper towels. I changed the paper towels weekly until 1 sprouted, around 90 days after picking from the tree. I then transplanted the seedling to a small pot, then transplanted to the pot seen in the pictures here. I live in Florida 9b, my question is, from this stage how long should I wait till I plant outside in my yard?

I had to take my Sabal Yapa seedlings indoors because there's people working outside. They are growing faster because I'm watering them more often and humidity is very high in the 3rd floor. I took these photos of the silvery undersides in some of these seedlings.

Planter Box ideas and questions

Hey everyone! I am already beginning to go into my Winter madness (and it's not even officially Winter yet), trying to find stuff to do and such to make it until I can bring my Plants back outside. I have some Palms that have a very big root ball and it seems like the Planters at the store are either not deep enough or way too expensive. So I was thinking about building a few wooden planters. Once they are built, would you line them with some kind of landscape fabric or plastic (with holes for drainage) on the inside or put the Dirt directly in there? I was also wondering if some of you already did that and if so, would you mind sharing with me/us wha…

Burnt Archontophoenix

This is one I got from Meg out of cape coral., last September. It's done very well and is one of my fastest kings but I'm not sure which species. Anyway the largest frond was very lush green but it looks like it's burning. Does this look like underwatering? I know they like wet feet and I've been watering my indoor palms only once or sometimes twice a week. Thank you.
