Should I put it on a bigger pot?

Hi, I've germinated a wodyetia bifurcata (foxtail palm) one and half year ago, but i'ts on a pot, not too big but not too small and the soil is not very good it contains too much moist in the soil, and i'm worried because I don't want it to get root rot. Should I put it on a bigger pot with a more sandy soil with some compost and better drainage? On the winter I have the palm on a little glass greenhouse. I would appreciate a lot your replies.

Should I remove rotten roots?

Hi all, I'm germinating Washingtonia (1 inch height seedlings, look good and grow by 2-3 millimeters per day, 2-3 inch roots) but some of them got root rot. Some seedlings have 1 root, some have 2 (second is healthy) Of course, I will now transplant them into larger cups with drainage holes and will stop overwatering. But should I remove this black and brown parts? Maybe H2O2 soaking? Is it possible that such a black tip appeared because of the heating mat? Thanks!

Frond size

Hello everyone, my potted majesty palm has just opened a new frond ever since I bought it. The frond seems to be slightly smaller than the ones that are currently on the palm. It is currently in a 30 gallon pot. Could the pot size be the issue or is it not enough fertilizer? Thanks!!

Okay is it bad?

Hi all, these are my Washingtonia seedlings sprouted 50 days ago. I've got dozens of them and Phoenix D. They were doing fine, but now I see some white mold/fungus/mealybugs. Should I treat it or is it fine and just some seedling part? This white pieces are reaaaly small. For the first time I noticed them on a date and scraped them off with a metal ruler. Now this date has been clean for a week, but on many other seedlings I see white dots. Seeds were cleaned with H2O2 at the beginning, no mold mentioned while germinating. These seedling get 1 hour sunglight a day. Some of them have slowed down a lot in the last week (it was 5 millimeters a day, it became 1-2), but…

Germination moist and mold
by andrebazhen- 3 replies

Hi all, I am trying to germinate W. robusta (also some L. Peltata and date seeds) on my windowsill. A month ago some white mold (photo1) killed all my seedlings - sure I overwatered them. Copper fungicide, H2O2 - no result. Now I've got 50 seeds in two differents types of soil with different soaking time and with H202 soaking. Less than a week - 90% spouted and looking fine (photo2). I've got two questions: 1) I use separate open bag for each seed (photos3-4) and got drainage at the bottom to prevent overwatering and underwatering: using a straw, I pour water straight to the bottom and bottom heat mat slowly raises the moisture to the top. Is it a good solution?…

Areca Vestiaria Decline
by KingBob- 4 replies

I have a small Areca Vestiaria on my front patio that I've had more than 2 years and it had been doing fine. Beginning a couple months ago, it has been in a steady decline as you can see in the photo. Am I overwatering it, underwatering it, too much sun? We did not have a freeze this past winter where I live (perhaps some mid-30's a couple times). Any thoughts and recommendations? Thanks!

Help needed with a Phoenix Roebelenii

Hello all, new member here, great Forum. Proud owner of a Mexican Palm and a Queen Palm, both doing quite well (see attached pics of those two). Recently acquired a Dwarf Date, and ...she isn't doing all that well. Repotted her from her nursery pot, leaving around 2-1/2" of new soil around the perimeter of the soil/root ball she arrived in. Currently watering every other day. She is getting full sun from around 10AM-6PM, otherwise in shade. Temps here are in 90's during day, high 50's-mid 60's at night. Dry climate, I am in the high desert. Her fronds seem to be turning dry and a blue-pale color. See photos. Suggestions ? Thanks in advance. Here are th…

Surgery on a coconut

Let me just say that I am now officially a “palm freak”. I came back from a trip to SW Florida. (Great trip! Got lots of palm seeds and a few coconuts). I did my research and was ready to sprout this coconut, unfortunately my impatient side kicked in and I tried sawing away some of the outer husk even though I should have let the husk dry out in the sun. The coconut was closer to the surface than I thought and ended up cutting it real bad and it lost about 1/3 of its fluid. Surely it was a goner! But then a crazy idea came to mind. And so, to the best of my ability, I cleaned the area around the cut to ensure that no debris got inside the coconut and dabbed the a…

Windmill Palm in pot in shock?

Hi everyone, I have been looking at the forum for a while now and just joined. I live in zone 7B in NC. I recently bought my first windmill palm and fan palm. My windmill is in a pot and I’m getting concerned about some spots and overall look of the palm. It was in a 3 gallon container when I bought it. I used well draining soil and added permatill. These are my first two palms. My fan palm seems to be doing great while my windmill is getting some yellow and brown spots as you can see in pictures. I am following the water schedule the nursery gave me. I also noticed a massive ant population and tiny red bugs that look very similar to clover mites which I have never had…

Flowering coconut palms

I am writing a proposal for a research project currently that has to do with coconut flowers and am trying to see if it is feasible to get a flowering coconut palm in California. I know they don't normally grow here, but was thinking if I could get a mature palm and put it in a greenhouse with simulated tropical environment, it might work? Several road blocks have led me to this forum, so I'm hoping you can help: 1.) Are there any suppliers that might have mature dwarf coconut palms either in California, or are able to ship to California. I know this is not trivial, and am working out with CDFA to figure out what needs to be done, but if there is a supplier alread…

Overwintering pots
by Than- 1 reply

I know it is only June but I see my potted tropical plants grow fast and I had to repot all of them to much bigger pots and I'm sure I won't have enough time space to put all of them in my flat this winter. I was wondering if any of you leaves potted tropicals outside during winter and if yes, do you take any action to protect the plants? I am mostly concerned about keeping the roots warm. I was wondering if inserting the pot in a bigger pot filled with mulch is a good idea? In my patio temperatures can go down to 34 F (1C) on the very coldest nights. On most days temperatures are between 45 and 55 F which is not bad but I have some quite tropical species, such as a…

Indoor P. Roebellini Questions
by Kirry- 8 replies

I got a small P Roebellini at a nursery in Phoenix this weekend to keep me company indoors (until I'm able to afford my own house and can plant it outside in my yard) and have a couple questions about it. 1. Why are its roots.... above the soil....? Is that normal? Should I put more soil in there to cover them?? Should I just try to repot it? I'm nervous about doing so. 2. I may have committed the cardinal sin of pruning it too much. Please forgive me. I thought it would be OK if I pruned off some of the brown fronds but they were also green halfway up so now I'm realizing that was a really bad idea and I shouldn't have done that.... My question is…

Nursery pot sizes
by miamicuse- 7 replies

I have an exceedingly stupid question but it's a bit embarrassing to be asking. I buy 1 gallon water bottles and clearly a one gallon bottle is bigger than a 1 gallon nursery pot. I buy 5 gallon paint that comes in a bucket that is clearly bigger than a 5 gallon nursery pot. Why is that? Is there a reason? May be there are different gallons kind of like imperial tons and metric tons?

Best potting mix for livistona chinensis?

Ok so I had a community pot with around twenty seedlings, but the soil was too saturated and they started declining, plus an ant infestation took hold and it was a mess, so I made a new mix 30% perlite 10% peat moss 20% miracle grow cactus and palm, and 40% top soil. Only 7 survived the ordeal but they were doing great, I ferilitzed them and they were all putting out their third or fourth strap leaf. The soil drained perfect, but now it has ants again and some fuzzy mold or fungus, probably from the undissolved fertilizer, Nelson palm fertizer btw if anyone was wondering, what do i do now?

Livistonia Chinesis. Chinese Fan Palm.

Hi, there. I'm very new to palms and recently acquired this lovely tree about 3 weeks ago. Came from the nursery big, lush and green. I've watered it twice since then, waiting for the soil to dry up considerably, once from the top and once from the bottom, both times with a quarter dilution of a high quality organic fertilizer. I noticed some that the lower, younger leaves were having some issues somewhat early on, they seemed to be yellowing a bit and fragile/breaking at the leaf seams. Just recently however, things seem to have gotten a bit worse. I'm including pictures to give as much context as possible. I know it's difficult to diagnose plant problems over the intern…

I have about 48 seedlings that were previously in small cut up water bottles that I would like up to 4"X9" tree pots. These are Licuala sp (not sure which kind) seedlings. Can someone recommend a good soil mix to use on the slightly bigger pots? Should I use Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm & Citrus Soil, or do something else? The water bottles I have now, I used generic top soil, mixed with sand, perlite, and I put 2" of pea gravel at the bottom of the bottles.

Im sure within reason you can always over water, but say your soil is still wet from rain a few days ago but now it's a very hot/sunny day. Is it best to give them a fresh drink during super hot days? Or are they happy as can be with the wet soil?
