Exotic weeds?
by BS Man about Palms- 37 replies
- 3.4k views
Well, as many of you know, I have a lot of weeds... some very different .. But few give me pause enough to snap a photo as I was trying to start weeding in earnest here soon. I noticed this one has "acne" on the leaves (or so it looks) Ever seen this? This morning I snapped a shot and it looks ready to bloom soon, I'm tempted to wait to see what it looks like.. Anyone else have ones different to show (yes, I can and probably will show some others)

I'm contemplating planting Alludia procera and Pachypodium lamerei, rosulatum, and geayi. Anyone have experience growing these? Planting these without impaling yourself? Thanks in advance.

Bromeliad Show/Sale at Terry Park, Ft Myers, 12-11
by PalmatierMeg- 17 replies

I went to my third annual Bromeliad Show and Sale on 12/3/11 at Terry Park in Fort Myers. First thing, I dashed to the sale tent to scarf up plants. My current broms of choice are terrestrials like Cryptanthus, Dyckia, Hechtia et. al. After I blew my budget and loaded my scores, I headed over to the show to see the plants there. Kim requested lots of photos, so I complied. I downloaded so many I will have to post them in batches. Here are views of the outdoor sale. Lots of goodies. A couple of pictures of my purchases in the Honda Element

I have a few of these Hawothia that I can not ID, can anyone help me out, or suggest another garden site that could help? To me it looks like Haworthia margaritifera or Haworthia attenuata or a subspecies/ hybrid maybe? What ever it is its very hardy and the only Hawothia I can grow outside with winter protection. Thanks for looking. Roger

Saw this at Jesse's yesterday. Not sure of the species (I think it's a Browneopsis but I could be wrong...). About five years old in the ground, from Scott Cohen.

Jasminum rex

Jesse Durko has this beauty for sale. First time I've ever seen it. Huge (for a jasmine) flowers about 2.5"/6.5cm across, large foliage. Sadly, no fragrance, no matter how hard I tried to imagine it. Still, a classy, refined-looking vine. Not sure, but I don't think this takes any cold.

Ok so I just go a Fernandoa Magnifica today, Its around four feet tall. Has anyone have more information of cold hardiness with this plant. I did research a few threads here, but most of them were seedlings. I must say I am not taking any chances for now until I really find out. I live in a zone 9 with occasional frost in the winters. Any more info would be appreciated. Thanks:D

Grevillea transplanting
by Palm crazy- 9 replies
- 3.5k views
This summer I planted my first Grevillea, 'poorinda leane' aka 'queen'. Its only a one gallon but starting to bloom and I like to move it to a sunnier spot so it can take full advantage of the little winter sun we get. My question... It's only been in the ground four months, so would it be ok to transplant now or should I wait a few months? My coldest weather is Dec to mid Feb. The new spot is somewhat protected from cold winds. Thanks! Roger :D :D

Puerto Rico farm photos
by Cindy Adair- 7 replies

The only plants in these photos that we have planted are the orchids and the variegated Clusia tree. The hundreds of heliconias, fruit trees, gingers, bromeliads and larger palms were planted by the previous owner. Over the last almost 5 years of visiting about 4 weeks total per year, we have added hundreds of small trees and other ornamentals and still discover plants we didn't know were there! We are still extremely excited about our little corner of paradise. So if you want a nice place to visit or retire that's still in the U.S., consider western Puerto Rico.

Avenue of Purple Poison

In my never-ending quest to keep the gophers from eating all of my plants, I decided to try a barrier planting of toxic Ricinus communis along a stretch of my property line. I'm hoping that the roots will spread and either repel or kill any gophers in the area. These were all grown from seed, either collected or ordered online and now these plants are seeding themselves already. They take very little water, and add a lot of color to an otherwise arid dirt road. Take a look. Anyone else trying gopher spurge or any similar ideas to repel gophers?

Happy Heliconia Thanksgiving
by PalmatierMeg- 5 replies
We hosted Thanksgiving at our house this year. Once we had tables set up and covered, we went outside to pick some of my husband's heliconia flowers for centerpieces. These elegant flowers need no other decoration. We selected from about 4 different varieties/species in glorious shades of yellow, orange and red. My husband knows what's what but I don't. They brightened up the rooms so much I thought photos were in order. The small orange heliconias graced the dinner table. These huge red heliconias ended up on the snacking table. They were so heavy we had trouble finding vases that could hold them without tipping over. Stellar flowers that don't look real - but…
