I was at the Eumundi markets on Wednesday and ran into a member of a local tropical plant group and we had a lovely yack over a cuppa mud. Me thinks I might make some calls and join this plant group. I was curious, how many others are members of other plant groups (besides Palm/Cycads), and what are those plant groups/societies ?.

Anybody growing jaboticaba?

I want to plant a jaboticaba on the hillside where I'm planting palms. I think that it would look great among the palms, with the berries on the trunk, but I'm wondering how it will do in the decomposed granite. DG isn't exactly acidic. I was going to dig a big hole and basically use the hole like a pot and fill it in with a more acidic planting mix. I'm going to be chipping the DG out -- probably with a jack hammer -- so I'm not too worried about forming a "plow pan". Am I making a mistake doing this? How do you grow jaboticaba in Southern California -- in Escondido? I have the purple variety, but I've heard that the yellow fruited type tastes even better. …

I don't have any photos, but thought I would ask anyway since there are a lot of south florida members. Thanks in advance

foud a big flowering Delonix regia, Royal Poinicana near here
by Eric in Orlando- 3 replies
I discovered this Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia, on Sunday. It is growing in a backyard a few houses down from the date palms in my previous post. It looks to be growing in a perfect microclimate, on a slope near water. In the last photo is an odd mixture of temperate and tropical, the Royal Poinciana is growing next to Weeping Willow, Salix babylonica. This tree is located about a mile from Leu Gardens in the Windsong Preserve neighborhood in Winter Park. Our big Royal Poinciana isn't flowering yet.

Laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia) is a very common tree in Orlando and other parts northward, but is seldom seen south of Lake O. It prefers deep neutral to acid soils, but these trees at Miami Springs Country Club have been doing well on shallow limestone. Habit on shallower soils tends to be more rounded than on deeper soils.

I had the honor of speaking at Disney at the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival. I gave a presentation on prehistoric plants that are still around today. I was out there a day in March, one in April and one in May. Two presentations each time. It was a lot of fun and EPCOT looks incredible. Here is a link to the whole album. This album has photos of topiaries, mass flower beds and plantings around EPCOT. I also will post others of individual specimens and of the different countries there in seperate posts. http://s212.photobucket.com/albums/cc79/wdwplants/2012%20EPCOT%20Flower%20and%20Garden%20Show/?start=all

Hura crepitans-- Sandbox Tree
by fastfeat- 2 replies

This large, spiny tree is a member of Euphorbiaceae. Since Glenn Curtiss was friends with David Fairchild, it's likely that this tree was planted around the time Fairchild was around. Not sure why called Sandbox Tree; certainly wouldn't be planted around the kiddies in today's PC environment
