Acalypha hispida disaster
by Laisla87- 4 replies
In a matter of days, my acalypha hispida has gone from this: To this: And I have no idea why. The plant has grown like crazy up until a month ago, when winter set in. The plant has been outside but the weather has not been terribly cold (8C to 17C daily, with a couple of unusually cold maximums of 13C). The plant seemed unaffected by this. Later on, it started to look droopy, as if it needed a drink. So I gave it water. But it continued to look dessicated regardless, and now cannot stand up on its own, the leaves are all brown and dry and the stem wrinkled - symptoms common in thirsty plants. As these plants are now rare in Australia and not carried by n…

Help please, with my cycad
by MattyB- 26 replies

This is my E. lehmanii. I've never grown one before and this is it's first flush. When the new leaves started coming out I thought that it looked a little funny, but now I'm sure something is wrong. What is wrong with these leaves? I sprayed some Daconil/chlorothalonil on the new flush and caudex just in case it's a fungus. This area gets watered once every two weeks, has decent drainage, but stays evenly moist. We had a week that was really warm and it started to flush and lately it's been cool and more humid and now it seems to be rotting and stalling out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Philodendren salom
by PalmGuyWC- 6 replies
- 2.1k views
I have some Philodendren saloms that have grown up and they are blocking the view from my kitchen window. How do they do if one cuts off about a foot or two of the old stem? Will the old base grow new foliage and if so how long does it take? Also any hints on how to root the growing tips? I'll cut back to old wood. Dick

3-4 years ago I bought a small (3 gallon size) Clusia plant. After it got bigger I planted it. To my surprise it went through the cold winters of 2009-10 and 2010-11 with only minor leaf damage. This past winter it handled fine. I know about a year or so ago I posted a photo of my clusia as I didn't know the species, although I knew it wasn't Clusia rosea. I think somebody said it might be Clusia lanceolata, but I can't recall now, and that it was more cold hardy than Clusia rosea (which I found that out for myself to be true, as the cold killed my C. rosea). In any event, I'm wondering when I can expect to get some flowers on my shrub. How large does my clusia have…

Orchids on Palms

The other day I received an e-mail notifying me that Neiacassorielo had added me as a contact on flickr. Much to my pleasant surprise, when I visited her page I saw quite a few nice examples of orchids on trees. Not just any trees...but palm trees. Here are a couple of my favorite shots...Meu Paraiso and Coqueiro Areca com orquideas. Woah! Awesome! I especially like those shots because, as the admin of the landscaping with orchids group, I'm all about seeing tree-mounted orchids in context. How many of your palms are naked? Why not broaden/multiply their appeal by attaching some epiphytes to them? Should there be a law that requires you to do so? Yes. Defin…

A few questions on Cassia fistula
by Kostas- 1 reply
Hello I have been traveling in Israel for the past week and came across Cassia fistula trees in full bloom and 1 with mature seed pods as well, from which I collected a seed pod. This seemed to be a lone specimen in the town and didn't see any other around there. What are the chances the seeds I collected to be pure? The seedpods were huge, around 50-60cm long and 2cm wide,so I guess there are fertile seeds in there. The flowers were bright yellow in long pendant inflorescences so the motherplant itself seems pure. There are unfortunately good chances of other Cassia sp. being present but I didnt see any Cassia javanica around or other look alike species, only erect infl…

A few Broms for IDs please
by Neil C- 7 replies
I've been sticking Broms in the garden whenever I see ones at the markets that catch my eye. I haven't really been interested in what they were until recently and would like to know a bit more about them. I think all the upright ones are probably some sort of Billbergia but I'm far from sure. Many thanks for any replies and are there any good website with photos of Brom species/hybrids for indentification? Don't worry about any of the Broms in the background and I know one photo has a Billbergia Hallelujah on the left but I'm after an ID for the pinkish one on the right. Again many thanks. I've just seen a post about an FCBS website so I'll have a look at that. Regards…

Zamia lindenii habitat shots
by Sim01- 6 replies

Hi, I am currently doing an internship in Ecuador and I my free time is dedicated to cycad "hunting". As I am in Guayaquil, I had the opportunity to see Zamia lindenii in its natural habitat. Some plants have a big trunk and the leave are quite large. The quality of pictures is not very good, the forest was thick and the light low. Furthermore, I forgot to buy mosquitoe repellent and hundreds of these creatures were sucking my blood while taking the pictures. Enjoy Simon

Secrets to growing Tillandsia usneoides?
by Neil C- 3 replies
- 1.2k views
I have this plant growing in a couple of trees and it starts off looking really good and then seems to go downhill before picking up again and the cycle continues. What are the secrets to keeping it looking good all year? The best I've seen it grow was when I had it hanging on a metal hook but I'd really like to keep it nice in the yard. I used to mist spray the ones in the trees but now they just get water when it rains. I'm assuming they like high humdity but what about shade, fertilising etc. I really like the look of it at the Mt Cootha botanical gardens in Brisbane (see below). Please share your secrets to growing it well if you don't mind. Many thanks. Regards Ne…

Cycad Day 2012 at the San Diego Botanic Gardens
by cycadjungle- 0 replies
If you haven't heard about it already, The Cycad Society is having our annual Cycad Day event this year in San Diego on August 4th 2012. It will be in the Ecke building at the San Diego Botanic Gardens. (used to be Quail BG) We will have cycad talks in the morning, some sort of food for lunch, and then our big auction, which mostly will have cycad related items, but usually a few other things as well. I have already been hearing about a few really nice items that some people mentioned about bringing for the auction, but I don't want to say these things will be there for sure and then it doesn't happen, but I CAN say that there should be some really nice plants that, histo…

BBC article on how plants can suffer from being potted
by PANGEA EXPRESS- 3 replies

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/18612661 I thought id share since alot of us grow our plants in containers. Its already common sense that a pot restricts growth to a plant, but the use of a MRI to view the roots zone and how it reacts to the limited space is interesting.
