Mike Harris and Jeff Searle both have two of the nicest private palm collections in South Florida. While attending the tour, I was amazed seeing all the Palm accent plants. Lots of wonderful colors. As Randy (Palmisland) states, they are "palm jewelry ... " Starting of with The Mike Harris Collection. Corot - a not very often encountered cultivar. A beautiful variety developed by Mr. Aubrey Christian of Miami around the 1920's -1930's

Dioon califanoi
by turfpro01- 2 replies

Is there any variation in weather not this plant will have spines on the leaflets? I have a few older ones that have none, But i also have a few seedlings, some i bought, some i grew, that have small spines. Also another grower has ordered seed from multiple sources and is getting plants with small spines. Some of the older leaflets do start to angles like a califanoi. and are starting to get long and narrow. Maybe it looses them with age? Thanks for any help.

"Hawaiian" plumeria??
by rprimbs- 4 replies

Last year at the Greenscene sale at Fullerton I bought some plumeria cuttings that a woman from Hawaii was selling. Most of the cuttings were $5 cuttings, but she also had more expensive $8+ "Hawaiian" plumeria cuttings. I bought both. I guess that I should have asked her what the difference was. I can see a difference in the leafed out cuttings. The "Hawaiian" plumeria have darker leaves and seem to be smaller and more compact. Is there a special type of plumeria that is referred to as "Hawaiian" plumeria?

Plant ID Help Please
by Dr. George- 2 replies

While on a quest for something else, a couple of these plants with the yellow flower caught my eye. The guy running the nursery told me what they were, but I could not understand what he called it through his heavy Spanish accent, and figured I would just get the name from the receipt, but, alas, I can't read it on the receipt either. Would appreciate an assist with the ID - Mahalo - gmp

Unknown tree Asteraceae in North Long Beach
by fastfeat- 6 replies

Anyone recognize this small tree? It's been here for a long time. (I first saw it when I lived in Bellflower years ago and forgot about it 'til Don Hodel "found" it again recently...) It seems to be a fall-winter bloomer (prob. daylength dependent). I originally thought it might be a Montanoa species, but I don't think any have yellow ray flowers.

Deppea splendens

I went a little crazy when I saw this plant and bought one (according to my 6 year old grandaughter) to 'save the earth'. The information available varies in dates but is consistent with the players involved. Sometime between 1973 and 1981, botanist Dennis Breedlove discovered this plant while trekking through the cool mountains of southern Mexico. The plants were found nowhere else except a single location in the cool Mexican hills and possible Northern Bolivia. When Breedlove returned to the site in 1986, the plants were gone - a victim of farmland development. The species is now believed to be extinct in the wild. Fortunately, Breedlove had saved some seeds of…

This latest flush of leaves is really long. If this was planted in the ground the about a foot worth of leaves would be on the grass. I wonder if this is a fluke of nature designed it this way

Our Lancepod Tree, Lonchocarpus violaceus, is flowering for the first time. This is a nice smaller, tropical tree that flowers in the fall. The flowers are scented and smell very similar to Northern lilacs. The bees also love it and there were lots of honeybees, bumblebees and others drawn to it.
