What's wrong with my Sabal etonia?
by redbeard917- 28 replies
- 1.9k views
This Sabal etonia has grown here slowly but steadily for years. It's always been completely green. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever watered or fertilized it. I'm not far from the native range and have placed it in a location with sandy soil and a good bit of sunlight. Very recently, perhaps a month or so ago, I noticed it starting to decline. The newest leaf looks green, but the most recent look mottled and the oldest have gone completely brown. All the leaves you see on it were green previously. It almost looks like cold damage, but it hasn't been very cold here. I have other tender palms that get damaged every year and all are still untouched. Thanks

Do I Buy S. Minor 'McCurtian' or a "Normal" S. Minor?
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies

I was originally planning on ordering some Sabal minor 'McCurtian' to plant here soon, but, I have read that Sabal minor 'McCurtian'defoliate quicker than other Sabal minor ecotypes. I am on the boarder of zone 7a/7b in Virginia, so wouldn't any Sabal minor be "bulletproof" here?

My Needle Palm went from smaller fronds to big fronds over the summer, look at the size of them, and they'll get much bigger! I had to hold the camera way up to get the whole frond in the picture!

Queen Palms in El Paso?

Hello Everybody, Driving back from San Antonio last weekend I was going through El Paso on I-10 and noticed a Taco Cabana. It is well known that this chain prefers to plant palms to add that tropical feel at their restaurant locations, but I was stunned when I examined more closely that there were three good-sized Queen Palms in the front hell-strip! Google maps shows these as being planted after the terribly cold vortex that slammed the region in February 2011. These were likely planted either later on in 2011 or in 2012. The December 2012 street view shows very young queen palms which grew greatly by 2015. Looks like they normally have the fronds singed in…

Cats peeing on potted Trachy...what to do?
by jfrye01@live.com- 34 replies

I was examining my Trachy that I am intending to plant this spring, and I smelled a very strong cat urine smell, and all the dirt around my palm was SOAKED with cat urine...I have since put all the cats outside, but what can I do to save my palm, or is it too late? I'm going to be pretty ticked if my mom's annoying cats killed my $150 palm -.- Any tips appreciated...thanks!

Florida Serenoa repens
by Brad Mondel- 6 replies

Here's some pictures of Serenoa repens in habitat around northern Florida. They're scattered about by the thousands along with Sabal palmetto and S.minor. They provide food for many animals like the black bears and many birds. If you look close you can see a stripe of faint variegation in this frond: Hope you enjoy these photos. I never considered growing the green variety but after seeing them in habitat I'm sold.

Pindo questions:)

Alright, going out on a limb (frond?) here:) I am planning on planting two pindos in my yard this spring, despite being told it can't be done in zone 6b...However, for winter, I do plan to construct a small, temporary, sturdy greenhouse from PVC pipe and plastic and place lights on a thermocube inside. I plan to do this for all my palms, even the Trachy and S. Minors...Anyway, I was wondering, where can one buy a pindo palm? I'm wanting one with a small amount of trunk. Also, how many years do they take to fruit? How tall are they usually before they begin fruiting? I can drive to Dallas if need be. I've heard others mention the Dallas Farmer's Market, but I was wonderin…

Old Brahea armata in Southside San Antonio, Texas

@richtrav told me about an old/tall Brahea armata growing on the Southside of San Antonio, Texas. I had a meeting at Lackland AFB this morning, so I decided to stop by ahead of time and have a look for myself. It is nestled amongst a larger planting of tall Sabal mexicana. A very nice looking specimen with great color.

Jubaea or jubaea x butia?
by VA Jeff- 2 followers

I have a palm I bought from California years ago that was supposedly a jubaea x butia F1 hybrid. At the time, it was in a 15 gal container. Now it is in the equivalent of a 90 gal trash can, since i couldn't find a pot big enough. I suspect it is nearly 15 years old now. Relatively slow growing. Leaves have clear hooks on them, and the petioles are unarmed. The leaves are nearly flat, and occasionally suffer from mild fungal attack in Southwestern North Carolina on the border of zone 8/7. Do you think this plant is pure jubaea? I don't see any sign of butia in it. If so, could it be the biggest jubaea east of the Mississippi now? So what do y'all thi…

I planted this Green Malayan Dwarf palm with only 1 feet of wood in March 2008. Since then, we have seen many cold nights in inland central Florida (west Orange County) but this palm has not only survived but thrived. My trick is to use simple store bought heat lamps (Lowes, HD, etc) and point at the crown. I use up to three of them on the nights below 35 degrees. For frost, I use only a 30" industrial size fan pointed directly at the fronds from a distance of about 12 feet. I find the gentle movement of the fronds prevents frost from settling on the palm itself and no damage has been caused. This green Malayan dwarf palm flowers every single year but does not always…

Possible microclimate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina?
by Pee Dee Palms- 2 followers

To the left of my house there is a relatively small area (around 15 feet) in between my house and my neighbors house. It is a SUPER wet and muddy and my air condition units are back there. It gets very little sun light as my 2 story house is covering it. It is a north facing wall. It seems like it can be a bit cooler back there but then the air condition units pump out a little warm air. Does anyone think this could be some sort of microclimate? I was thinking of maybe putting some sort of fern there or maybe even shade loving palm. Any ideas of it being a micro-climate?

Palms to try in zone 7a/7b?
by NCFM- 15 replies
- 1.9k views
I live right on the 7a/7b line in the western piedmont of NC and I'm looking for some new palms to try. Currently, I have three Sabal Minor var. Louisianas and three potted majesty palms. The majesty palms have grown to be quite large and I'm worried I won't be able to fit them inside next winter. I'd like to replace them with some palms (other than Sabal Minor) that are hardy to my zone and can be planted directly into the ground. I'm relatively new to palm cultivation so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Heating Cables
by Scott Stelmar- 31 replies
- 1.9k views
Hello All, Has anybody had experience with burying underfloor heating cables to keep the soil warm around the base of palms where temperatures drop below the cold limit? I'm assuming that the palm will by natural rising heat, convection, and capillary action keep the crownshaft from fatal cooling. I'm living in Ocala, Florida and would like to put some royals and Christmas palms in my yard. Copernicia vs Livistona

Hi, I'm hoping for some advice about Copernicia prunifera and Livistona saribus for the upper TX coast. I'm in zone 9b with very hot summers and short, cold winters with an occasional freeze. They will be going to two locations, both are in full sun and one is exposed to winter salt spray and very high winds. I have no experience with either Thanks
