One thing about living in the city is you can do some pretty cool things with the side of the house. No need to make that trip to the back boring. Space here is narrow.

Chronicles of a Cold Hardy Temecula Garden
by trees4p- 34 replies

Good morning! We moved to Temecula a little over two years ago. Me and my wife have been gardening for about 20 years and have lived a lot of places. Each time we moved we did our own landscaping. My wife picked most of the plants. I did most of the labor. This worked well for us. We traveled to hundreds of nurseries far and wide, picking up knowledge along the way. We often traveled just to see plants. But all this time we never got in to palms. Then we moved to Temecula and there was this strange palm in the front yard we had never noticed before. Come to find it's a Bismark Palm. That sparked my interest (aka obsession) in palms. We both had a goal for HEAVY tropi…

The Swiss Parajubaeas

I decided to create this new topic to be able to document these two Parajubaea's progress. They are planted in the garden of Hotel Brenscino in Brissago (southern Switzerland). One was donated by @maesy and the other one by yours truly. The garden is open to the public (or at least nobody said anything when I walked in) – if you ever go there, it is totally worth checking out. It is very well cared for and boasts a wide array of exotic plants. My little one was planted last year. I was told that last winter was pretty bad for that area and you can see the damage on the older fronds. Can't complain about the view though! Marcel's monster. I …

Here are some pictures of my largest needle palm, my largest Brazoria, and some Agave pups. This needle is a tad over six feet tall. This is my largest Brazoria; it is finally picking up speed. Here are some Agave pups popping up in my rock garden. Thank you for looking. I have many other cold hardy palms I can share if people are interested. Have a great day.

Palms for an 8B food forest
by Brian F. Austin- 24 replies

What would be some good edible palms to plant in a Texas zone 8b food forest? I can only think of maybe Phoenix Dactylifera and Butia Captita? Any other non-palm trees that come to mind? I'm planning on growing from seed... loquats, pecans, peaches. And lots of fig trees from cuttings.

Odd Cocoid Hybrid
by buffy- 1 follower

So I have this cocoid hybrid that's supposed to be a Buju or Jubu. It's been in the ground for 5 years or so, shady area, slow growth. But this bad boy is different. There are two odd characteristics that suggest Syagrus blood. Check it out. From a distance, it just looks like a robust Butia. On closer inspection all the fronds show plumosity and the fine point armament of a some mules. The pinnae are actually a little wider like Jub. It's fascinating. It lost its spear with the 8F low this winter, but fairly unharmed otherwise. What do y'all think? My best guess is Buju X Syagrus.

What are my trachys doing?! 1 2

So we planted four 30# Trachy Fortunei last October at the completion of our pool project.. They were beautiful until, well we all know what happened in February... They are browned out (petioles are generally all green) fronds not so hot on all of them, but things are pushing and I have some hope of them recovering (I hope being the key word). I started noticing just recently the base of the trunk starting to look like someone after Thanksgiving where their belt is starting to get tight and they grow horizontally... Are they growing in girth, which would indicate growth upward at some point? What are my trachys doing?!

Newly Planted Butia Pindo Palm
by Ninja88- 10 replies
- 1.9k views
I planted a 2 foot Pindo Palm 7 weeks ago but I haven't noticed any growth. The palm looks healthy with only the older fronds having brown tips. The Center frond is still green, i marked it besides a mature frond about a month ago but haven't seen a change. I have mulch around it and its been well watered but not overwatered. Is it just focusing on growing its roots out or should i be concerned?

Best reliable palms for northern San Antonio?

I see a lot of dead Washingtonia trunks all over the place, but when I drive deeper into the city there are a lot of healthy specimens that have bounced back. What I imagine are Texas Palmettos all look healthy (not enough people plant these here), as do Trachycarpus Fortunei. I've seen one large Canary Island Date palm at the Rim that looks like it's recovering, and some Butia at a local restaurant. I went to a local nursery and the guy had tons of very healthy looking mule palms, but I haven't seen those anywhere outside of there. Still, it seems like 99% of what's planted are Washingtonia, and even then there aren't that many of them considering what I would thin…

My Needle Palm Is Flowering!
by PalmTreeDude- 10 replies

My Needle Palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix) is finally flowering! I won’t get any seed off of it (if it is a female, I’m still not sure what it is yet and don’t know how to tell) because I only have one and there are none close by that I know of. But it is still really cool, and is my first palm to ever flower!

Needle Palm

Hello All, I bought one several years ago, a 1 gallon from WalMart but it didn't even survive the summer so I had no way to test the winter hardiness. My soil tends to be dry (sand, stone and some clay/caliche) and lacks anything you could call organic matter. Even in an area of my backyard which receives regular watering it succumbed in July of that year. What kind of soils are best for Needle Palm, and how much moisture do they need? In my climate I am used to regularly watering everything other than native vegetation (which I also water to keep it looking good, and to keep alive during droughts) so I would be willing to amend the soil accordingly. …

Hi all, I planted a 30 gallon Bismarck palm in my front yard a week ago. Some of the fonds are turning brown. What can this be a sign of? I have read that the tree needs a lot of water the first week, and that’s what I’ve been doing. Every day about 30 gallons. Any input would be great! thanks
