Picked a few of these up last year from a Craigslist find and were labeled only as windmill. Does this look like fortunei to you guys? The fronds look a bit different from the rest of my trachies. Thanks, Dave

Found cheap rhapidophyllum hystrix!

Found these and almost bought them out! With tax it was more than acceptable price for these hard to find palms. Going to be planting some back bones for my garden with these when I get back home and might grab some more when I come back! They also had a good mess of southern yellow pines that I might get as well if they have longleaf. Going to make a groove of slash longleaf and loblooly with needles minors and yuccas sprinkled in. Anyways I know they are boring around here, but nice to finally start sourcing these for my projects and wife was happy to hear they won't need protection lol.

Hey y'all, We are going out to our place in Port Aransas and want to plant some palms. I'd like to try a foxtail, although I don't see many of them around. Would folks in the Corpus/N Padre area recommend them?

So i have a new palm added to my mini collection, a foxtail! I found it at Walmart for 14.97, couldnt pass it up. I know it doesnt take frost well, and i do not plan to plant it, but what are some suggestions to put it in the ground while in the pot? I hope they are not like bismarck palms!

Hi all, I have a number of 1 to 2-yr old plants, t.fortunei, wash, nannorhops, phoenix. I left a half dozen or so outside in their pots under a poly greenhouse cover (under the eave) during a recent freeze. but I think it was too much. Think these will survive? Any tips on rehab? Also, note the white fungal looking stuff on the bigger trachy... any suggestions on resolving that? This was in Vancouver BC, 8-9 zone I guess, temps dropped to -10C for a couple of days but I think they were only outside for one day of that. Appreciate your inputs!

Freezing rain Texas 1 2 3

What a drop in temperature going from 78° to 35° in less than 24hrs. We expect some freezing rain within the next 24hrs with a low of 30° . We aren't going to be above freezing for a whole day down here in San Antonio. For the second time this winter I covered my palms but this time , since they're all young and small I used trash bags to cover the crown and bud making sure water doesn't get inside the bud. Getting already tired of this winter. Are you guys protecting any of your palms ? My palms are still recovering from last winter storm . Wish you all luck.

Frond discoloring

Hi everyone, Sorry for all of the questions lately. I am pretty new to planting and not potting. I planted a sabal minor and needle at about the same time a month ago. They have both seen temperatures in the mid 20s a few times rebounding into the 60s with plenty of rain. On the sabal one of the fronds turned completely brown. This was planted bare root which I know can be troublesome. The needle was planted as a 30gal and has looked fine until recently the tips are turning yellow. Is this due to too little/ too much rain? Cold temps? Transplant shock? Or am I over thinking it? Thanks for the responses!

Frost cloth and christmas lights
by Palmfarmer- 6 replies
For my Majesties I got frost cloth, incandescent christmas lights in different sizes and burlap. What I had in mind was stuffing hay around the crown then tie up the fronds togheter. Then wrap the palm from head to toe in lights followed by 2 layers of frost cloth then mulch really high with hay. Good idea? Could I keep it like that for 2 months and just power on the christmas lights at night if needed and it would protect well and not harm the palm?

Our neighborhood here in Riverside got a nice dose of frost this Morning. Roofs are covered with white. It's April, what the heck? I looked up Central California and even up there there was no frost. That's rather late in the year to see the white stuff.

I live in the south of England and this is the first winter here for my palms. We are having a cold snap and I've put my palms against the wall of my flat in a patio alcove. There is shelter from above and three sides. I've wrapped them with horticultural fleece. We had-2°C last night and are likely to get temperatures just a few degrees lower during the winter. The patio faces south and even in the middle of winter gets warmed by the sun. What are the chances of my palms surviving? Comments or advice will be much appreciated. Paul.

Frozen palms

Crazy snow storm has drowned my palms in ice and snow. Hopefully these don't spear pull after the wet and cold weather: The rest are on the front porch staying dry or in the greenhouse. My needle is already thawed out and looking flawless.

Frozen Pots :(
by ColumbusPalm- 8 replies

Hey All, Made a stupid mistake and left out my potted palms too long. It has consistently been getting into 40’s 50’s as highs still so didn’t think this would happen, but the lows in the mid/high 20s froze the soil in my potted Trachys and Sabal. Any hope or will they likely all perish? Thanks Nate

Fruit on Sabal minor heading into fall
by JSKeys- 22 replies

This summer I finally got two of my Sabal minors putting out fruit. All the seeds have firmed up but are still green and aren't fully ripe. Unfortunately we are in fall and while we haven't had a frost yet it won't be long. Will they ripen when we reach low temps and if not if I remove them and let them dry will they still be viable for propagation?
