How to sprout Syagrus glaucescens seed
by Jeff zone 8 N.C.- 0 replies

For those of you lucky enough to obtain some of the Syagrus glaucescens seeds recently offered here ( they are all sold now) I wanted to give you an update on how to sprout them. They were sold as very hard to sprout. I got them on Sept. 8th. I cleaned the seed off by grinding them between two bricks and then shaking them around in a jar with a wet sand slush to finish the cleaning. I decided to try several different methods to see if I could get a sprout. I ordered Gibberellic Acid as part of some of the methods I would try but while waiting for it to arrive I decided to try a method without the G. Acid. So I took 6 seeds and de-capped them. That is I used a grinder…

Trachycarpus fortunei

Good morning from frigid southern middle Tennessee everyone. I'm new to the hobby of growing palms and i have many questions. The nights are about to start getting cold here, so today's question pertains to overwintering via a grow room set up specifically palms. Is it possible, with good grow lights and a temp controlled environment, for my trachycarpus seedlings to continue to grow throughout the winter months? Or should I allow them to go dormant for the winter months? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you.

Figured I’d post these for posterity. The bigger one is an odorata that I planted 6 years ago. The smaller is an eriospatha from 3 years back. They look pretty terrific after this last summer.

First time I've ever seen these in at Home Depot in East Tennessee. One says a Wodyetia Foxtail. The other pic I took was not labeled. I honestly have no idea. I just guessed perhaps a mule palm. They also had lots of Pygmy Date Palms.

Can someone tell me from this picture if these are Washingtonia filifera or robusta? The person sells it as California fan palm here in San Antonio. I messaged the seller but no response yet. I'm looking for a filifera but everyone unfortunately sells robustas in San Antonio.

Just brainstorming a few ideas in order to save my palms this winter. This is my 1st year growing majesty palms in zone 5b and Im planning to use red infared heat lamps that turn on when the temps drop to 45. All this is inside a tee-pee wrapped with multiple layers of shrink wrap. Is there anything Im missing? Is there any reason why this couldn't/wouldn't work?

I was never a huge fan of waggles but these have been growing on me as they get some size. The larger of the two has 35” of trunk and the smaller about half that. Pretty care free for me and the bonus is they always looks neat and tidy unlike regular fortunei.

A true safe bet for zone 7 palm growers?
by Subtropical LIS- 13 replies

I was taking pictures of my palmetto a few days ago and also snaped a pic of my needle palm. This palm has been in the ground for more than 5 years here on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound and is flawless. It grows like crazy, and after the 2nd winter, very few of the fronds ever show cold damage (maybe a few tips that turn brown) and puts out 5 to 7 fronds a season. It has taken 4 F (my coldest temp in 6 years) like a champ. My guess after half a decade is that for those in zone 7 Needle palm is a pretty safe bet. My only complaint is that when we get snow on occasion here on the coast (normally wet and heavy) some of the fronds get a little beat up. …

Watering mid fall into winter.
by jwf1983- 1 follower

Had some nice growth on a Trachy f. planted the second week of March this year. It’s planted in a part of my yard that gets both long direct sunlight during the summer (nearly 8 hours total, from early morning to mid afternoon), and the first sunlight in the morning during the winter (about 5 hours total, from early morning to about 1:30 PM or so). From the start, it put up new growth quickly: at the peak of summer, it would grow a new frond to completion roughly every week and a half or two weeks. Obviously, things are slowing down now, but it is still pushing out some new growth. My question is: How much watering do I need to do now and into winter? Do I …

Hi everyone, I'm new here and need help. I just moved here from southern California and really do miss my palms.😀 I'm about 75 miles north of Dallas (7b), have clay soil and keep getting conflicting information about palms, like cold hardiness, growth rate & max size. I did try Bismarckia and date palms (Canary and regular), last year. I had the seeds growing good in a baggie floating in my aquarium. By the time winter set in they ~2' and had about 3 leaves. I heard that they were cold hardy and planted all of them (10). Never heard of a polar vortex, but you know what happened. I want to try again but don't want to lose them again. I don't mind protecting them, as …

Hi there folks, im new to this but i would just like to pick your brains over a situation i have. I have very recently (about 3 weeks ago) just planted a Phoenix date palm of an age of 10 years old, i dug it out of a garden myself but i think now i might have made a mistake regarding the roots. Where it was you would wonder how it done so well giving that the tiny box it was in on top of shilly stones which where on top of a weed membrain! I planted it the following day in a prepped hole and tucked it in with john innes no3 compost, watering the roots in stages as i built up around the roots and levelled it off. Now it has lost its perfect spines on the leaf tips, thinki…
