Trachycarpus Fortunei Success Rate in Mid-Atlantic?
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 21 replies

I’m thinking about trying Trachycarpus Fortunei again this year. I’ve tried 3 before. The first winter had a low of about 12° in which 1 spear pulled (but made a full recovery), 1 died, and 1 was fine. I mulched the bases and wrapped them all in burlap for that winter. The more damaged ones were planted out in the open and the one that was fine was planted in the open but next to an evergreen shrub on the Northwest side. The next spring/summer I added a Wagnerianus. The next winter was much harsher with a low of 5° and ice storms. I was preoccupied and pretty depressed during that period and didn’t have the motivation to protect any of them. They all croaked (I even had a…

Zone Pushing in 7b

I'd love to see what my fellow zone 7b palm enthusiasts are growing that aren't typically thought of as hardy or are considered marginal in zone 7b. Please share what you're growing, how long you've been growing it, what temperature extremes its experienced and what protection methods, if any, you use.

Sago palm - is it dead?

Hello, I am new to this website and I am pretty new to palm trees. I live in zone 7a North Ohio and I have a dwarf palmetto tree (Sabal minor) and a Sago palm. I had these grown completely unprotected for the past 2 years, but now they are getting brown. The dwarf palm has brown on the leaves and the sago palm is completely brown. It was 7 degrees F this morning. What should I do?

Filiferas spotted in West Texas (7b)

Found in Seminole, Texas. Several Trachys found as well, didn't take pics of those. First one: I've watched this one grow from the time it had about 5' of trunk in 2011--the year that killed this palm's twin sibling (you can see the spot in the sidewalk where it was located). It has about 9' of trunk now, and the base has fattened dramatically. I think this will be a monster palm; sure to outgrow it's planting area in the pavement. The homeowner is a friend of a friend, and supposedly they've been waiting for this one to die from cold. I don't expect that'll happen anytime soon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4s6H4ku6ZY Ok... in the spirit of winter.. and the ice midst of winter storm Goliath.. The first named storm of winter?? I will now be taking bets on palm survivals. I think we got around 4-5 inches of snow since yesterday and has been below freezing for over 12 hours now. Yikey!

Suspected Jubaea X B. odorata

Purchased a strap leaf seedling about a year ago that was believed to be pure Jubaea. It's clearly a hybrid with strong Butia influence. The growth has been phenomenal. I just potted it up to 15 gallon in less than one year.

Butia archeri x Syagrus romanzoffiana

Hello, I acquired the above-mentioned hybrid about a month ago. Maybe I am blind, but I couldn't find any thread about it on palmtalk? I am eager to learn about its cold hardiness, eventual size and everything else. I admit, there is not much to look at + it had sunburn: But nevertheless, it seems a bit tougher than my queen palms which are just a little bigger. They even got burned at about -2 or -3°C and heavy frost, whereas this had nothing. Show me yours, please.

here is a nice article on a large washy (very filiferish imo) that has been growing in a frontgarden for 20 years. An intersting example of a true desert palm feeling at home in London. http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/news/10996087.Giant_palm_tree_is_turning_heads/

Found this established washy on google maps growing in Shallotte, NC. Is it filibusta or pure robusta? I'm still not very good at differing between the two when they're this size. Anyway, streetview is from 2013, wonder what it looks like today, or if it even survived this long. Here's a better view: Just down the street someone has two criss crossed sabals planted which I thought was interesting, also wish I could see what they look like now. Here's the link if anyone else wants to look around at the local specimens: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.9688088,-78.3774605,3a,75y,118.67h,87.61t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXx3_IxXqaYCPrA…

Pindo Palm growth rate?
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, How long do you think it will take the Pindo Palm on the left to reach the size of the Pindo Palm on the right? The left one I ordered from Home Depot, it came from Brighter Blooms. HomeDepot listed it as 3 gallon pot and it came in a 2 gallon pot and looks a little smaller than on their generic picture (this this the issue with HomeDepot, they give great prices, you can find great deals there, but no guarantees on what you'll get; usually I got good plants though). It costed $65. I wonder if it it's too much for this size and if I should return it and reorder somewhere else. The right one is 7G from FastGrowingTrees.

In everyone's opinion, what is the source for butyagrus that has a slim trunk. I want the coconut look, of course, and a stout trunk detracts from that look. So, what butia mother, what hybridizer would be the best to go with?

Death toll

Hmmm, a chunk of the experiments I planted are now dead, and it's not even January. Not to mention we've had some spectacular weather, with ample 70's and 80's. My upper hillside had two nights of 31F, that's it. Despite the mild Winter, the death toll continues to rise. These are all victims of high chill and cold soil. The hillside is also in mostly shade in the Winter, so tends to remain colder. None of these failures are surprises, but it was worth it to try. - dypsis lastelliana highland form, Len warned me, this is borderline in Socal, not even close up here. - dypsis orange crush, I hear out of hundreds of plantings in Socal, only a few specimens are know…

Palm disaster

Some sad news on my feather palms. Two months ago I started fertilizing four of my feather palms with blood meal. They show no sign of anything wrong, until this month when the weather finally got warm they started dying. (March & April well below average.) One of them the whole center died out, that was my only BxJ. All the rest have either solid center with total leaf gone on trunk and the others have center partly dying with good looking older leaves. I’m not sure what to think about this… my problem was fertilizing to early and then we never really got warm till early May. I’m not going to fertilize any other feather palms till early June. I think I’ve learn my le…
