Here is damage from 15F (~-9C) on my largest W. filifera... Several snow events less than 2 inches each AND several nights below 20F. The emerging fronds that haven't opened yet appear ok.. but if there is any damage there it might show up later.

My Virginia In-Ground Archontophoenix cunninghamiana

I germinated this Archontophoenix cunninghamiana summer of 2019, and I stuck it in the ground this past spring. I have been wanting to try one with protection just because I thought it would be to have a zone 9b+ palm in a borderlines 7a/7b area. So here it is, my Archontophoenix cunninghamiana with a heating cable just thrown around it covered by an old sheet and a tarp in Central Virginia. I chose this species because I not only like how it looks but because I know they can handle cooler conditions, which is perfect for inside of the protection. I open the bottom flaps to let light in and to give it ventilation during warmer days. It is actually growing inside of the pr…

Fruit on Sabal minor heading into fall
by JSKeys- 22 replies
- 1.5k views
This summer I finally got two of my Sabal minors putting out fruit. All the seeds have firmed up but are still green and aren't fully ripe. Unfortunately we are in fall and while we haven't had a frost yet it won't be long. Will they ripen when we reach low temps and if not if I remove them and let them dry will they still be viable for propagation?

Palms in zone 7b with protection
by jjjemetrious7- 1 follower

I live in zone 7b East Coast USA, and I want to know what are less cold tolerant palm trees from zone 8a or above that I can grow with just minimal protection like wrapping or some other easy method in winter. Are there any more different palms that are not Trachycarpus or Sabal that I can protect in winter?

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens has been been growing over 35 species of palms in zone 8b http://www.bamboo.caes.uga.edu/palmcollection1.html . Their trials are of particular interest to me as I am an assistant director of Grounds and Landscaping at Florida State University in Tallahassee,FL also in USDA zone 8b and wish to expand the number of palm species planted on campus. If you live in the southeastern portion of the U.S. (or a similar climate) I am interested in your experiences with the species in the list-some I know are iron-clad hardy for us but there are a number of other species in their trial list that we have not tried such as Chamaedorea plumosa and …

Trachycarpus fortunei in zones 9 and warmer
by JMBreland- 22 replies
- 3.6k views
In preparation for the palm segment of the "Ornamental Grasses and Their Cousins" garden tour at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, I'm realizing that I don't really have a clear answer why Trachycarpus fortunei, windmill palm, tend to not do well in zones 9 and warmer. It is known in palm circles that windmills prefer cooler climates, love clayey soils, and appreciate some shade in zones 8 and warmer, so I realize heat is a factor. Yet, I don't believe that is all of it. I have seen healthy specimens in warm locales. Dr. Wilcox suggested that nematodes are the culprit. For the southeastern US, the areas that are zones 9 and warmer are coastal areas and peninsular Florida.…

MULE PALMS NOW IN H>D>
by gsytch- 21 replies

This evening, I was looking in the orange H.D. and yes, they had 7gal and 15gal Mule Palms. I was floored. Stuck in the back, lumped with other palms, there were at least 4 of them. I have two planted in my yard, and the one in full sun is growing huge. The one in part sun, half the size. At $79 for a nice 7 gal, I'll include another now. I just could not believe it!

Check out Palms R Kool's latest video where he shows off some off the palmage on Lake Wylie just outside of Charlotte. Crazy seeing this stuff so far from the coast! The lake must provide a great microclimate

I live in N Florida in between Lake City, Fl and Jacksonville, Fl. I planted this Royal behind my red shed last summer. It took some leaf damage but had since put out a new spear this spring. I clipped the fronds and moved it to a sunny spot. The root ball has grown about 3x the size and I plan on moving it close to the south side facing part of my house to help protect it more. I mulched the base for winter and threw a blanket over it a couple of times. I travel for work so most of the time these palms are not protected. The only spear pull I had were the queens but they are all nicely recovering and everything is very thirsty waiting for summer rains.

Can anyone confirm that this filifera? It is exposed to salty conditions aswell as high humidity. its trunk was much fatter than the robusta's in the area. http://goo.gl/maps/pMnfR
