Any Mature jubaea or hybrids in PNW? 1 2 3 4

The current weather just has me wondering… are there many, or any mature jubaea or mule or hybrid palms in the northern Oregon/western Washington area that are gonna make it to true adulthood or long term? I mean the various butia and jubaea hybrids, and jubaea mostly. I know the trachycarpus hybrids do. Would Love to see some pics of the biggest baddest hybrids/jubaea in the PNW. Protected or not just wondering can these things really live to maturity, Even jubaea?

2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Maps Out 1 2 3 4

OK OK we all know the zones have flaws, yada yada but look and see if your zone went up. Click on map or put in zip code for your plant zone. Mine went from 7A to 7B https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ For noobs the plant zone is used to give a idea of what plants can be grown where you live and it is a 30 year average of the lowest temp recorded for each year. For example my zone is now 7B which indicated the average low over the past 30 years is between 5F-10F. But I had a -1F last year that also goes in that average and might kill some palms. I'm sure most people who view the forums have probably seen this palm pop up before and I'll be heading out to see the palm in person sometime soon but the building was torn down and thankfully they didn't remove the palms, but the filibusta/filifera will be really taking the test of winter this year without that extra heat from the side wall! It's free standing now and I'm nervous for it but I hope it makes it! Just thought I'd give an update on it since I think it's the biggest I think in Fayetteville unless somebody is hiding more somewhere else I'm also glad they didn't remove any of the sabals because that would be a such a crime because of how slow they grow a…

the speed of the mule 1 2 3 4

First let me say, I dont live in a cold zone, it either 9B or 10A depending on mother nature, this year was 10A. I did live in zone 9a gilbert AZ for 10 years where my best feather palms were queens(20F minimum in 10 years). With that experience, I do have quite a few palms that might be considered cold hardy. I use these palms in the colder more frost prone areas of my yard, and because I like them. One of the most beautiful of these palms is the mule, or x butyagrus. My little 3 gallon hybrid was purchased from mike evans in august 2010. Here it is, the middle 3gal palm as purchased.

(Thought this deserved its own thread) How are you holding up? It isn't officially summer yet and the garden looks like its the end of summer already here in Texas (I have some Taxodiums edging into dormancy already). Palms appear to hold up fine but even I, being the lazy gardener I am, have to consider some sort of a watering schedule now! It doesn't look like these temps are letting up anytime soon. In Texas we have been and will be hitting triple digits almost every day (I am afraid to look at the humidex values). Are any of your palms suffering yet? Other plants you regretted planting? Stay hydrated, friends!

Why aren’t there more of these being utilized here in the US? Can these handle the southeast’s humidity? I know many people aren’t advised to plant filifera- another palm that doesn’t like humidity- in the southeast, but I’ve heard of quite a few people that grow filifera- as opposed to the less hardy robusta- in 8b/8a South Carolina, middle 8a Georgia, the pan handle of Florida and in Texas. With the hardiness, I would assume there would be more of these.

Yes, this year I was blessed with gifts. I guess the powers above knew this was my tightest garden budget year ever and blessed me. Well, if we have a mild winter they have blessed me, if not I shall be forgiveness from the gift bearers. This is one of the 4 B. alfredii quite happy and pushing a new front. You can see another of the 4 in the background. All are pushing a new frond, so I guess they are happy in their new environment.

I didn't want to hijack another thread, so I thought I'd make a Butia x Parajubaea hybrid thread. Anyone else feel free to post pictures of yours as well, whether it be a Butia X Parajubaea cocoides or torallyi or even a sunkha. Anyways, here's mine purchased from the one and only Patric Shaffer. Butia capitata x Parajubaea cocoides: You honestly couldn't have packaged this any better. A puncture in the box during shipping. Luckily it missed the plant! This big guy is going into my newly purchased and put together greenhouse. By the time spring arrives, do any of y'all think I can put it in ground? Thanks and look forward to seeing everyo…

Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan 1 2 3 4

Anybody growing Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan? I have one that is about 5 1/2 years old, it is a very fast growing palm it's around 9 feet tall at its tallest leaf tips now. There is not very much information or photos of this palm, I've read that the mother palm has 360 degree fronds but none of seedlings were showing that trait so far. My palms fronds are getting rounder but are not 360 degrees yet. I also read that it is less hardy than regular Fortunei but since I live in Ohio I have to protect it every winter, the lowest my palm has seen unprotected is 19 f. If anybody has any Photos or information about this palm please share. Here is some photos showing the growth o…

Wilt Stop on Queen Palm? 1 2 3 4

As winter approaches I am preparing for the few nights we get where temps dip below the 30F mark for extended periods. In an effort to preserve the queen palm I bought back this late summer, I doubled potted it (still in the nursery pot) into a large ceramic frost proof pot. Then placed a heating coil (the kind you get for pipes) around the base, and backfilled with pebbles, wrapping the heat coil around the pot, then leaving around 6 ft to extend and wrap around the trunk if needed. So far we've had temps down to 28 very briefly, with no observable damage to the queen palm. However, temps are supposed to dip down to 20F for a few nights this upco…

Queen Palms in San Antonio 1 2 3 4

Hello Palm Friends, Reading back in the posts it seems Queen Palms are not long term viable in the San Antonio area due to some pretty severe cold weather that comes every 10 or so years. While walking in the King William area I came across a very large sized Queen palm and was curious how long it had been there to have grown so big. Google street view goes back to 2007 on this street and shows a good size Queen palm in the residence at the corner of Adams St and Forcke St. This queen looked obliterated after the cold winter of 2011, but has since rebounded quite nicely. The photo is from a visit in May of this year. Any others in the Alamo Cit…
