Vancouver Island summer update
by ShadyDan- 32 replies

The last 365 days sure were a challenge for the garden with 40C+ temps / no rain for 3 months during the 2021 heat dome, followed by a long, cold, wet winter that saw the coldest temperatures Vancouver Island has seen in over 30 years. I'm happy to see all my palms chugging along nicely now that we have some seasonably hot weather! I've included some non-palm plants as well because they are also zone-pushed and I just like them. Sabal Palmetto pushing on frond #2 for the year. 0 issues through the heat dome or cold winter. Chamaerops humilis var. argentea took the winter like a champ too and of course laughed at the heat dome. Sabal mi…

Welp. For those of you who don't know me and don't follow all of my posts, I professionally bounce back and forth between hotels in east Texas. Anyway this month I'm at a hotel that previously had what I'm guessing were Sabals that didn't survive the 2021 palmageddon, and the palm corpses are still in place. Our companies sister properties are in Houston near IAH, and are landscaped with Washies that were healthy and seeding a few months ago when I was in Houston for training. Long story short - Palm nerds, what would you suggest that will survive South Texas heat and North Texas winters? I know the answer is either Sabal or Trachycarpus, but I'm asking anywa…

By The Monkees there's a giant sabal that is 15 ft tall with loads of seeds on it, mabey a palmetto? Also next to it another sabal with seeds. Currently right now in 2022 they are building a new exhibit and there is a group of windmill palms that I believe made seeds because there's babies under it. I didn't get to take…

I am willing to pay if you can offer me some “cool” “tougher” coconut breeds. regards, Björn

T. ukhrulensis in.
by Las Palmas Norte- 14 replies

After growing this on from a seedling about 12 years ago, I finally got it planted. Digging a 15 gallon hole and unearthing many rocks (one 35 lb) in near 100F heat, was a task this ole boy doesn't do much of anymore. Show your ukhrulensis if you have one.

Phoenix Canariensis is cold tolerant however it’s fruit is too astringent and not edible. Is it possible to use pollen from male medjool tree to pollinate female phoenix canariensis? 1- Will it result in making a hybrid date fruit which is edible, with more flesh and sweet in taste? 2- Has anyone seen any such example? anything in the literature, has it been tried in date orchards or in the wild? 3- Are there any pictures of such a hybrid fruit, details about the quality of such a fruit, taste, size, etc? Please share your experience.

Up to -8 ° C. Do you think it will survive? Can the palm tree improve with spring? Or too damaged?

Livistona PNW
by ShadyDan- 25 replies
- 1.2k views
Hey Folks, Wondering if anyone has had any luck growing Livistona species in the PNW or any other mild high latitude climates (UK etc...). I’m specifically looking at Livistona nitida, as I’ve seen it rated for 8b. There are 8b and 9a pockets on my island, but obviously we lack the summer heat of a lower latitude 8b/9a. Could be another fun option to experiment with in my garden. Thanks in advance!

Cycas x Daebongensis
by Carolpalms- 4 replies
My cycas has gone thru 17 or 18 degree weather in a pot. We wrapped the bottom. I don't think the entire plant is dead, but the fronds appear dead. Fronds are all yellowing and appear fried. My question, can I cut all these fronts off down the the base or should I leave these fronds alone. I wouldn't know when to cut. That advice would also be appreciated. thank you, Carol

Treating fungus with Lysol
by glasalle- 2 replies
I covered my Washingtonia robustas with garbage cans to protect them from a 14F cold snap. I was out of town and left them in place too long. The leaves and spears have fungal growth on them. The spears looks partially dead, but has about 3 inches of green coming out of trunk. The dead part has fungus on it. I was worried about the fungus descending down the spears, so sprayed them with Lysol. Now I'm wondering if that was advisable.

Old Brahea armata in Southside San Antonio, Texas
by GoatLockerGuns- 26 replies

@richtrav told me about an old/tall Brahea armata growing on the Southside of San Antonio, Texas. I had a meeting at Lackland AFB this morning, so I decided to stop by ahead of time and have a look for myself. It is nestled amongst a larger planting of tall Sabal mexicana. A very nice looking specimen with great color.
