Washingtonia transplant shock

Hi, I'm having a bit of an unusual issue, but maybe some of you could give me some insight on this. I live in zone 7 and had a Washingtonia in the ground for a couple of years. It grew to about 6 feet (tip of frond). Last year I had to move, so I dug up the palm in December, taking care to disturb as little of the roots as possible, but inevitably a lot of them had to be cut, and I potted it up in a pot filled with cactus mix, and brought it inside in a room with artificial light that stays at around 68F (20C). I only watered the palm after around a month and a half after planting, because the soil never really dried out more than 1 inch from the surface. …

In my opinion, I think one of the hardiest palms in this world are Trachycarpus Fortunei, when they get mature, but I'd like to hear some opinions from others, since from what I heard the Filibustas survived the texas freeze of 2021, It they are that hardy, it would survive Chicago winters like it was northern Florida, we only get colder temps in the negatives for a week or two (lowest we got was record breaking -30 F couple years ago) Worst could be around -19 in a normal winter. So I'd like to hear from everyone!

Hello palmtalkers! I've been doing some garden planning and I need your opinion on minimum allowable distance between Washingtonia filifera plantings and the wall. The main purpose is to plant the palms as close to the walls as possible, so they would benefit from the warmer walls during winter while providing cooling shade during summer, but how close is the question. Thanks!

Hey, I like to get some greensand in my potting mixes for a really slow Realese of pottasium. I see there is some bags ment for fertilizing that costs over 100 usd. However there is another seller that sells it by the lbs really cheap, but it says it is for water filtration. Is there really any difference in these?

I just got 10 free germinated trachy seeds with a seed order. Nice vender. But last night was about 24-26F. What is the lowest temp these sprouts can take before it really hurts? I hope I don't have to move everything around and break out the 2 x 4 ft heating pad just for them? Or do I? Temps in my place are around 68-70F during the day and 35 - 40 at night. Is that enough?

After a trip to Cali and a visit to Patrick I was in possession of quite a few seeds of jubaea, Chamaedorea Radicalis trunking form, and mixed trachycarpus Nanus hybrids (open pollinated at Patrick’s property). Jubaea seeds were collected from Mission bay. I’ve sewn about 180 Cham rad, 150 nanus hybrid and 200 jubaea. Have had the first pops on all three in less than 2 months. Set up in tank shed room at 70f ambient, heat mat on 18/6 on/off. This mainly just to keep track of the progress and collect any advice along the way. Thanks for lookin! (p.s still have some jubaea seeds available.)

I've always wanted W. Filifera, but being naive and uneducated early on, I tried W. Robusta, and well you know how that goes in a zone 8a DFW area.... I've held off for almost three years, but this spring, I finally felt comfortable with some local genetics and bit the bullet.. I planted two W. Filifera (as pure bloods as pure bloods can get). The backstory is interesting, as the owner here in the DFW area hails from a small valley town in Arizona, which is a solid 7b, which sees ice, snow, mid-teens temps through March, and the parent palms on their property have been there for decades. As we have yet another Polar Vortex in December which has become all too common in the last 13 years, I look out at a garden full of damaged palms. They will survive but be unsightly for a couple of years, AGAIN. They were just growing out of the last damage 2 years earlier. I will have to look at that and pick up endless fronds while cursing them. Take my advice, even though we are classified at Zone 9a plant palms safe for Zone 8a like Mules, Chamaerops, Chamaedorea, etc and save yourself from the ugliness.

Previously, it had been noted from St. Tammany and Orleans parishes in the far southeast of the state. I m looking for these 3 cold hardy palms. I m in Atlanta-GA-USA Mail order would be fine. A filibusta would do if a filifera is hard to find. Not sure of availability, trusted sources. I would like to avoid the seed route but it’s not out, so seed sources are good too (Rarepalmseeds has a huge minimum order. Not sure about the auction sites). Thanks a lot Pat

Chamaerhops Humilis in USDA zone 8 This is an example of why you should plant tte blue form “cerifera” for long term success in this plant zone. The image labeled Dallas 2020 exhibits my green form C. Humilis. It is 20 years old and grown from a seedling on-site. About 11 feet tall. Most winters the past 20 years in this Dallas location were zone 9 and 8b. In 2021 the February freeze low was 3F The green form was killed to the ground where as the cerifera only defoliated. It looks like my palm tree has a Borax deficiency but I don’t really know. One of the open spears pushing that is brown at the base and petiole didn’t pull out, so no spear pull, and the temperature in the box is usually from 34 to 48 Fahrenheit in there.

Has anyone had experience with Ravenea glauca? Growth rate, cold exposure? I have a 5 gallon one that I am planning to keep potted, possibly planted in a location sheltered on three sides with reflected heat, open to south that could closed off when an arctic intrusion hits Corpus Christi. On North Padre Island lows under 25 are infrequent compared to Corpus, but the accompanying north wind - often in excess of 30 mph completely destroys Foxtails and severally damages Pygmys and Queens.
