Washingtonia filifera or filibusta

I'm a little confused now. A few months ago I purchased 2 "California fan palms" . I also have a robusta for comparison. I see the difference. My Filifera have much deeper leaflets and seem to be longer as well . What I've noticed on one of the filifera that's been in the ground since October shows spikes all the way to the leaflets on a newer frond. Hmmm 🤔 . On the filifera the petiole are longer and grow more straight than curved like on the robusta. Colors on both aren't identical but very similar. The robusta was planted in March last year had more time to establish. Here are pictures of the 2 filiferas. Could it be a filibusta?

Are there any cold hardy small trunked or stemmed palms that look good in containers other than the Chamaedorea species? Have looked at those and am going to try and grow 2 nice species from seed. Those 2 are hardy to 20F, maybe 18F or so.. Have also looked at Rhapis multifida which is (??) hardy to 15F (??) but looks hard to obtain. Looks like it could have a very nice form though with a little bit of judicious pruning. Are there any other small trunked species that would look good in a container on a deck and might be reliably hardy to 15-18F? Or 20F? That take less than 25 years to grow 1 inch? I looked at the Rhapis dwarf species, and Oh My Head... slower than m…

Sabal Palmetto in 7b - 30+ years from seed - is finally trunking

I collected seed from some Sabals at Vistana resort near Orlando around 1990 when we took out daughters to Disney World. One has been in the ground in Williamsburg, Virginia since a few years later (after growing it out in pots). It's in partial shade, but it has taken all of 30 years to begin to form a trunk this year. Here are a few shots. Not a way to quickly establish a palm, but it is rewarding to see if finally beginning to get some vertical growth.

Spear pull protocol..
by Borderzoner- 1 follower

Well it's been almost 2 months since the last major freeze. Nearly all roebelinnis, majesties, queens got the spear pull going on. The last of em are just now spear pulling. Nasty fungusy smells coming from the larger queens that are spear pulling. Some smaller roebelinnis, cat palms and majesties are melted to the ground. Not much hope there unless they are able to sprout from rhizomes. My main question is for the bigger queens and majesties. They have spear pulled but it's complicated because I don't know if it's too late since they started pulling weeks after the freeze event, and there's fungus smells all up in the holes. And on top of that its been raining off and on…

I recently bought a Livistona chinensis and decided that I wanted to separate the 5 palms each and just have 5 specimens that I can plant all separately. What would be the best way to do this while keeping all the palms alive?

Hey y’all, I figured we should have a tab for zone pushing, there was a lot of talk around what people do to make their favorite tropical landscapes in colder zones. For me I’ve stuck with sabal minor, needle palm and trachys but would like to try more in pots, maybe a cabbage palm or just send it with a queen palm here on the coast of Maine, Zone 6. Share your pics and zones, don’t forget the locations. palms I have in pots

It's blooming from foliage at ground level. (shot from above; inflorescence out-of-focus) Does this mean it's the non-trunking type, or might it still develop a trunk?

Transplanting Saw Palmetto

I have a silver saw palmetto that I planted in too much shade. It is surviving here in Z8a but not thriving. It is also getting swallowed up by the surrounding much more vigorous vegetation. I would like to move it to a location with much more sun. Do they transplant well?

Canary Island & other Date Palms
by Banana Belt- 10 replies

Observation: One of the growth habits of the CIDP is when getting older they tend to have at the lower end of their trunk an exposure of what appears to be roots trying to form. The older the palm gets the more and higher up the trunk these aborted roots are exposed. Question: Why is that? Are the palms pushing themselves up exposing more roots to the air, or do these roots begin to grow at the bottom of the trunk where leaves once grew? Theory: I can think of one theory explaining these exposed aborted roots which would be that date palms grow in desert areas such as North Africa where drifting sand can easily bury the lower trunks of palms in sand. Could…
