Has anyone been by Griffin Auto, in Valdosta, Ga, and seen how the Sylvester’s faired this winter? I’m not positive how cold it got, but I wouldn’t be surprised if dipped in the high teens a couple nights.

Reflected heat and Sabal minor
by westfork- 12 replies

Can Sabal minor take reflected heat in the summer? We are starting a very experimental palm planting on the west side of a brick structure up in USDA hardiness zone 5, heat zone 6/7, and 43 north latitude. It is in an easy location to provide winter shelter. The mainstays will be Sabal minor McCurtain, Cherokee, and a couple others as well as a Louisiana and x Brazoriensis mixed in. Needle palms in a different spot. -This location does not have full sun, only from 1PM to 9PM, but the morning is still very bright. We usually have intense sun and deep blue skies from the moment the sun clears the eastern horizon, especially in winter - No haze from being anywhere n…

Very Random Spear Pull on Windmill
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

So I came outside and took a glance at my Windmill and I immediately knew something seemed off about the spear. One of the fronds that was still coming out of the growth point seemed very crispy. I decided I would gently tug on the spear and out it came. I will say it wasn't a wet spear pull, it was quite dry. I'm not sure exactly what is wrong with it as it was very random. After the cold snap we had it didn't pull so I'm just so confused as to why all of a sudden it pulled. Please any suggestions as to what happened and what I should do going forward to keep it alive.

Underground corm for Sabal palmetto
by palmhort- 4 replies
I am living in a new house by the water in Middletown, NJ (zone 7b). The front of the house (brick) faces South and gets full, blasting sun and heat during the summer months. I'm planning on growing a Sabal palmetto by the foundation. I know from growing Sabal minor for many years they get the huge underground corm (which I discovered makes the palm VERY Difficult to transplant). Do young Sabal palmettos grow the same huge underground corm? I would obviously provide extensive winter protection. Thanks Jeff

Confusing Rot Near Growth Point of Queen Palm
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

So I just checked out how all my plants were doing and I noticed this weird darkish brown rot on the newest frond of my Queen Palm. The whole frond is nice looking and the palm appears healthy but right at the bottom of the frond that is coming out there is this weird rot. I tugged on the spear pretty good but it isn't budging at all. Anyone know what this is? I sprayed it with some copper fungicide so hopefully that helps.

Well, this was bound to happen. Friday I unwrapped my windmill zone 5 Montreal, Saturday forecast was for rain but guess what....Nope heavy snow❄❄ is what came down instead. Grrrrr I may have wrapped it too tightly at the top. A few fronds are showing brown spots and a little mould. Only a few outer fronds are damaged👍 By June it with hopefully look great. The last picture is a needle that was garage kept,he definitely not a happy camper....it's showing more damaged fronds than my windmill

Bizmark spots
by Almisa- 8 replies

Anyone have suggestions on these spots on my recovering (from winter) B.nobilis? I am glad it did not defoliate this year, however, does it need some attention? Also, some hot yellow streaks. I just cut off the worst fronds this morning even though they still had color, afraid that a fungus was starting. One of the new leaves opened with very browned tips, which may have been a hold out from winter damage - but any other thoughts is appreciated. I sprayed the entire plant and hearts with copper fungicide.

Are these slow as seedlings? I planted my 2 Acrocomias in bigger pots last week, they seem to be doing better and they are growing but very slowly. Is this normal? Photos of a spear of one of them below. 2nd one is kind of blurry.

Patricks Hybrid Characteristics controversy

A friend of mine went down to California not to long ago to get palms and stopped by Patricks to get trees. he and Patrick got into a conversation about hybrid characters and how no 2 trees have to look the same. some people have been giving Patrick a bad rap stating that some of his trees don't have certain palm variants in them cause they don't show in that tree -like example Jabutia x syagrus but doesn't show the queen so there for Patrick is wrong . I have a video of the reason that could be. go to about 9:48 of the video about that issue. and if you want discussion about it is open for debate 10000000_607792360777678_8926951843070112410_n.mp4

Reykjavík, Iceland - ALDIN Biodome Research Garden, 64,1˚N I didn't see fit to comment until they had survived a winter, but the first two I've uncovered apparently have, so I figured it's time to ask! Trachycarpus fortunei: wasn't in great shape when I got it last spring; had partly recovered by the fall, but experienced complete outer leaf dieback over the winner. Inner leaves however remain green; the exact cutoff point between dead and alive leaves is yet to be seen. Trachycarpus sp. nova: I'm in shock. It looks basically just like it did in the autumn. That's one hardy palm Others of note: Butia capitata: Still covered. Will uncover it a w…

What to plant here? 1 2
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

So, I have this area on the western side of my house that gets sun from about 12:30-1:00 to sometime later in the evening (maybe 6:30 to 7:00). It gets slightly dappled sun in the later evening but mostly full sun. A few palms come to mind but they all like shade. I really want to utilize this area as it gets nice wind protection from all sides, a concrete pathway near it, eaves that create a bit of frost protection, and a nice reflective wall. I really think this is one of the best microclimates around my house, but I just don't know what palm would be good to plant here. I would prefer a palm that is rated for 9a, as I would like to try to zone push something here. So i…

Is my palm alive
by Plantsinmygrill- 11 replies
Mexican fan palm - Austin texas purchased from fancy big nursery which assured me this would survive Austin winters- it survived the winter 21 storm (covered) so not sure why it’s not putting leaves out now. This palm has not put out any new leaves since the last frost in Austin texas - Jan 20th I believe. The freeze was not that bad and my other palms survived. It’s listed as a zone 8 palm so I am not sure if it’s still alive. - Should I slice some off in in case it’s alive further down the trunk ? - Would epsom salt help ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Best cycads for San Antonio/Hill Country?
by fr8train- 1 follower

I live just outside of San Antonio, but it gets a bit colder here than in the city itself. I believe it's zone 8b, maybe even 8a, whereas San Antonio I think is 9a for the most part, with many microclimates. I see the standard cycas revoluta everywhere, and they defoliate but then come back. I was wondering what other trunking cycads might make it here in this climate? I'm not nearly as familiar with cycads as I am with palms, and even with palms I'm learning a lot. What do you all think?

Post Winter 22-23 Comparison, N.Fla
by Almisa- 1 reply

My outlook Year Ago Today photos led me to examine a few comparisons on several cold hardies in my collection. Thought I would share. As a reminder, Northern Fla experienced severe lows from mid 20’s to 30 for 3 sustained days over Christmas weekend. Since then, we’ve been on a roller coaster of highs and chilly weather, but nothing really below 36F here since then and then only as a single overnight. I was worried about the impact on my collection of the one big event, however, it appears that my good protection enabled a similar - not worse, and in some cases better effect than winter 21-22’s numerous single day drops below freezing (with protection) between December a…

Windmill Trouble?
by PDXPalm- 4 replies
Was out cleaning up the tree's and noticed I may have a Windmill in trouble. This one survived the ice storm on 21 in DFW. We got to 8 this year and did recover. We had some more cold air and now I noticed this attached. No spear pull, but looking pretty yellow. Thoughts? This year out of 6 Windmills, this is the only one with an issue. Two sables, no damage and one Mediterranean fan palm completely defoliated but it looks like two stalks are grown green again.
