Pindo Palm growth rate?
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, How long do you think it will take the Pindo Palm on the left to reach the size of the Pindo Palm on the right? The left one I ordered from Home Depot, it came from Brighter Blooms. HomeDepot listed it as 3 gallon pot and it came in a 2 gallon pot and looks a little smaller than on their generic picture (this this the issue with HomeDepot, they give great prices, you can find great deals there, but no guarantees on what you'll get; usually I got good plants though). It costed $65. I wonder if it it's too much for this size and if I should return it and reorder somewhere else. The right one is 7G from FastGrowingTrees.

I couldn't help but think after frequenting a couple HGC's 🤔 where did all the multi potted Livistona chinensis go. By now you could go to just about any garden center and pick these up on the cheap. Even this spring I didn't see any available for full price haha I really wanted to throw a couple in deep shade and watch them stretch out. T J

Bridgeport Sabal Palmetto CT Notable Trees 1 2

I was on youtube yesterday night and found possibly the most northern semi longterm Sabal Palmetto on the east coast. The video referenced CT notable trees so I went to the site and found out more about the palm. I am still dumbfounded. It sprouted from seed in 2005 and was planted in its current location in 2009. It is still alive considering the video was made this fall. I am absolutely dumfounded at how this palm is still alive and doing well at that. it doesn't look like it even gets any protection during the winter when I looked at old streetviews. Here is the CT notable trees information about the palm. there is also a Windmill palm on the site. http…

Planted Palm Journal

I planted my Washingtonia palm. I think this is a hybrid. I wanted Filifera so badly. But I do love Robusta too. So I thought why not get a hybrid to enjoy both characteristic of traits it will have. Like I wanted to plant by the pond in the garden the garden bed zone. Where there is still plenty of room to allow the truck to grow. Thinking of planting another one by another angle of the pond where I share my property line with my neighbor. I will wait and go to Theodore Payne Nursery for a pure California Fan Palm. Originally wanted to plant against corner of the pond. But I just think that space would be better with Strawberry Tree like I wanted o…

Had these sabal Birmingham for a year now. These were bought from my friend Sabal King. 10 popped rather quickly. The remaining just sprouted recently. Maybe it was just a fluke...these were in a baggy on a heat mat in the garage and things got freaky hot in the garage last weekend. I forgot to crack a window 🥵🥵 must have been 90 degrees plus the heat mat. Guess I've recreated Texas heat🤔😮 This one is on steroids

Hello all, I was wondering if you have any suggestions on what steps to take for my middle fan palm, the main trunk, had some damage from the extreme heat last summer, the 2 beside it seem to be doing great, but not noticing any new fronds from the main trunk. Any info would be great. Thanks

Sabal x Brazoriensis 1 2

I saw a mature brazoria palm at barton springs for the first time and was amazed at it's incredible mass and huge leaves. They almost remind of green bismarcks or a sabal minor on steroids. I thought sabal mexicanas were cool until I saw this Brazoria. For some reason I assumed this ancient hybrid had a small trunk. Not so. Anybody here growing these? I would love to see more photos of them. Here's a picture of it... sorry for the quality... it was taken from the car through the fence with the phone. I'll get a close-up next time I'm over there.

Spear pull - moisture after rain
by smatofu- 16 replies
Hello Guys! Unfortunately, I pulled spear from my CIDP. I don't cut the trunk yet, but I cut all fronts to the level where spear cavity starts. the cavity is about 8-12 inches deep. I cover the palm when its raining. After recent rain, I've noticed dew over the cut fronds. Water also collected at the bottom of the spear cavity. Wouldn't that mean that the palm is still alive? That there is healthy and live tissue inside the trunk? Thank you!

Date Palms in Ocean City MD

I just wanted to put this conversation up on the web to see if anyone can shed light on something that appears, simply put, impossible. I recently saw three date palms (canary or other species?) found growing by the Holiday Inn in Ocean City MD. I have pictures of them though for some reason I can’t upload them. Though I am regularly in nearby Delaware, I can only speculate that these trees are left entirely unprotected during the winter given their size. I seem to vaguely recall having seen them as newly planted trunkless individuals probably at least seven years ago, though I can’t remember for sure. Remarkably, two individuals had volunteers scattered around the base o…

New member in New Jersey seeking advice

Hello New member and first time posting. Last spring I planted 3 palms from PDN Nursery 2 were rated more or less hardy for my zone and 1 was more of a gamble. The gamble Sabal miamiensis looks rather dead. The others Trachycarpus fortunei 'Dwarf Delights' and Trachycarpus fortunei 'Bulgaria' seemingly sailed through the winter beautifully apart from the rabbits eating the leaves from time to time. Even a few weeks ago the new growth appeared green and healthy. Today the spear on Dwarf Delights was brown and dry and pulled out easily, it was no longer attached. The rest of the plant is green and healthy and the trunk is firm . I have seen so…

So far so good 1 2

This is the first year that I’m not going to protect my needle palm until it gets too cold for it So far, a cold event brought it down to 18 degrees, and it’s currently 29 out. No damage at all on it so far. Tonight it’s supposed to get down to 19f, so it will go through basically the same temp twice. Also, I forgot about these little Washingtonia and Sabal seedlings behind it, so far the Sabal Causiarum has less damage than the Washy hybrid. Already know that they probably aren’t going to make it to next year but I guess It see how far they can go.

Brahea edulis-Cold Hardy?

Is Brahea edulis cold hardy? My area is 8A. My area grows Washingtonia palms, Canary Palm, Date Palm, Mediterranean Fan Palm just fine. I’ve seen only one armata grown here. I think people here are not attracted to the desert look of Amarta though.

Clustering Palm ID? (Central Texas)
by Dwarf Fan- 4 replies
In-N-Out burger in Killeen, Texas after the freeze of 2021 replaced all their fried Mexican fan palms with Sabal Palmettos. I was in the drive-through today and I noticed a clustering Palm that looks like it could be a Sabal… (I thought maybe a Nannorrhops ritchiana but that is way too obscure right maybe a Sabal minor?!?) I am guessing it isn’t anything too exotic but I was just checking to see what you guys think this is? (The smalls clustering Palm in the foreground.)

Help IDing these palms
by gdumea- 4 replies

Good morning, Bought these palms at a greenhouse an hour north of me for a surprisingly cheap price, about $25 a palm. I know two of them are windmill palms. I'm not sure what the one that looks like a date palm is. Could you all please help me ID this palm? Tips for growing trachies would also be appreciated, one of my saplings had spear pull and died this winter, the other had spear pull but seems to be staying green, I did the whole fungicide treatment. It has some black fronds though. Tips would be appreciated, as I'm new to all this. Dry Zone 8a in New Mexico for reference. Thank you!

Palm Species Recommendations for Zone 7b/8a

Hello! I'm in USDA Zone 7b/8a border with Köppen Csa-BSk borderline climate, with rainy (sometimes snowy) winters and dry-hot summers. There is also a high risk of thunderstorms in spring and early summer. Average annual precipitation is around 400 mm. I have never seen any unprotected palm trees in my city other than several Trachycarpus fortunei specimens. (One of them died in the summer because of drought) Also, garden centers sell Trachycarpus fortunei in their indoor plant sections. I have one Trachycarpus fortunei in my garden unprotected, in a large pot. It survived 3 winters. I plan to plant it in ground asap. Do I stand any chance to grow palm trees? Which …

Hi all, I finaly managed to get hold of some Sabal Brazoriensis seeds but I wasn't expecting them to be this large. I've only germinated S. Minor and "Lousisiana" before and I've never had them this size. Can anyone confirm that Brazoriensis has such big seeds? Picture below shows the seeds next to Sabal minor seed. Thanks in advance!
