Washingtonia Filibusta - Fayetteville NC 1 2 3 4

I posted about this particular Washingtonia, which I believe is filibusta, in early February. I collected a bunch of seeds from the ground at the base of this palm, located at 944 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville NC, and sowed them in a shallow Taco Bell take away container. I placed the container on a warming mat and two weeks later, I have a ton of baby washies. The parent palm has been in its currently location since at least 2007, based on the oldest streetview images available on Google. Since then, this parent plant has experienced multiple single digit temps, and multiple freezing precipitation events, with seemingly no protection or care at all. I'm hoping the offspring f…

South Texas Jubaea Squad

I now have 6 Jubaea chilensis seedlings and one Jubutia. I will likely keep these potted to at least 5 gallons before planting them in the ground along the forests edge. I am located just north of San Antonio, but at over 1,000 feet above sea level, my nights are cooler and my daytime humidity is much lower. I am hoping that these can survive my zone 8A or colder winters, and the Dallas area survivors have brought me some solace. The Jubutia is the 1 gallon pot on the left.

Starting a Washingtonia from seed 1 2

Hello palmtalkers! I've already had some experience of germinating Butia and now I'm starting my second palm from scratch - Washingtonia, possibly a pure filifera. This is a motherpalm, located in Termez, Uzbekistan. This Washy is 13 years old and it's fruiting for the first time this year. At age of 6-7 it managed to survive an extreme cold snap in february 2014, with a low temperature of -22C (-7.6F), the lowest recorded temperatures in the whole region, and continuous 168 hours of subfreezing temperatures, this is what makes this specimen interesting. These seeds arrived to me Cleaned and soaking in the water

Well I've caught the palm bug and lemme tell ya, it's been taking me on quite the ride. My property didn't have much in the way of landscaping when I purchased it, just a few small flowering bushes, etc. Nothing exciting, nothing tropical looking. Although the lot wasn't eye catching, it did give me a blank canvas to work with. As a brief overview, I've added some trees to the front yard but didn't do any structural changes. The back however, has received a retaining wall with 3 large planters built into it. This area extends from my concrete patio and serves as both additional patio square footage as well as an area to add some palms and whatnot. Here's what I've …

Planting Palms in IL first time!

I have 2 bottle palms that have lived in pots for about 5 years each. They are doing ok but want to plant them in the ground instead of bringing them in each year. I know about wrapping and heat for winter but was wondering about anything that is specific when it comes to planting them like soil mixture, gravel at the bottom etc. Any info is appreciated! Thanks

I’ve known about these palms in my area for a very long time but just felt like posting a picture of them today while I’m on a walk. Such incredible palms which have definitely seen some very cold temperatures over the years. Only if these were easy to come by! Here are also some pics of a mystery palm (it is unlabeled). Looks like a mule but I’m no expert at identifying these hybrids. Regardless, it is a beauty.

Trachycarpus variants hardiness

Hi all, Early this year I purchased the following Trachycarpus seedlings: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Trachycarpus “Takil”, Trachycarpus “Kumaon”, Trachycarpus Princeps “Stone gate”, Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis and Trachycarpus Wagnerianus x Fortunei. For these variants I have read various claims, the Manipur and Princeps would be less cold tolerant and the Takil and Kumaon would be more cold tolerant compared with the normal Fortunei. Does anyone have personal experience with these forms? Is the difference in cold hardiness significant? Stefan

Texas sabal transplant issue

When I though I figured it all out, boy was I wrong when I got this field grown Texas sabal planted in my backyard.🤦🏻♀️ What in the world is going on!? This is so bizarre I can't find an explanation as to why the 2nd and the 3rd newer fronds are dying, yet the newest spear looks nice and green!? The palm's trunk is 5 ft tall. Planted in February 2024 near Houston, TX. The palm was brought from Florida. It is planted in heavy clay soil. Thoughts?

Spring Progress

After a relatively mild winter but night temperatures consistently below freezing, the palms did well. We only had a couple nights in the teens with next days below freezing but otherwise, very stable temps. The Trachy, Brazoria and Needle, unprotected except for some lights barely used, are pushing a lot of new growth. I fed all with PalmGain about a month ago. The Trachy is still recovering from that winter hit a year ago…a lot of frond damage but with this milder winter, I think it’s almost recovered all the fronds it lost. It has more flower spathes than ever…maybe 12 or so…the Brazoria is a little on the yellow side but it’s a much lighter blue …

Trachycarpus Takil, Anyone?

Hey All - I picked up the palm below last weekend from a local nursery. It was labeled Trachycarpus Takil. The gentleman who sold it to me said it is more than likely Trachycarpus Nanital, which I'm equally excited about because I'm looking forward to one day having a beefy Trachy. Curious if anyone out there actually has a true, mature Takil? From my conversation with the seller of my palm, he was saying he thinks most (if not all) specimens marketed as Takil do not actually end up being Takil.

Seed hardiness of Trachycarpus fortunei?

So. I popped by the thrift store (shopping for a wheelbarrow) today when I took a photo of these three Trachycarpus fortunei (I assume, looks like it to me?). I stepped closer after taking the photo and discovered that this was a cluster of two girls and one boy, and the females had several panicles absolutely chock-full of fruit. It is mid-April here in Anacortes, Washington state. Last winter we had a sustained arctic air breakout and temperatures fell to 9 F / -13 C. The palms took the days of howling arctic winds with aplomb, as you can see. My question: will the seeds still be viable after exposure to that kind of cold? Thanks for any and all intel!

This is the most it has ever grown this early . I know it's because I kept the incandescent lights on it with the blankets into April , and I forced it to grow faster . It is almost respectable and it's only April . I know many have seen this palm , but it is my baby and I have been so impressed with its growth . I say I'm in 7B but I'm actually a few hundred yards into 8A now . But I'm sure I'll have more 7B temps in the future . Sorry I don't have Shaylen modeling . Will This picture below was earlier when I just took off the blankets :

Hello, so right now I’m zone 6 the last remnants of winter are melting, we actually had a frost yesterday but we had 65 degree weather as the high. It was beautiful and I hoped you all enjoyed the eclipse. Anyways, many daffodils and such are now coming up, meaning the planting season is coming before we know it. I said a while ago I was going to buy some palms online, and I am going to buy off Home Depot because they are cheap and Home Depot I’m 99% sure guarantees the palms no matter what. Anyways there are these 1 gallon 2 pack windmill palms. They seem big on the picture, but when you look at the reviews they seem small. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Online-Orchards-1-G…

Carpenter Ant Control

Hello all, I recently planted a Sabal minor a few weeks back that had a small “trunk” on the backside of the plant. I noticed over the past week that pill bugs and ants were pretty prevalent in the trunk area, but didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to now, and there’s a noticeable chunk of the trunk that has been chewed off. There are ants everywhere around the plant now, and there’s sawdust-like powder in and around the trunk. This leads me to believe that I’ve got carpenter ants. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure they really won’t damage any parts of plant that is currently alive and growing. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want them gone. What are some met…

Washingtonia in SW Oregon?

I'm curious if anyone here has reports on Washingtonia palms growing in the Rogue Valley of SW Oregon. I saw two small W. robusta in a neighborhood in Grants Pass two autumns ago, but not anything big. I wonder if the drier and hotter growing season there would tend to favor filifera or filibusta?
