CIDP hardiness? 1 2

I live just down the street from this CIDP, I assume, in Shreveport. I have watched this for thirteen years now and it always refoliates. We were in the big freeze with Texas and it bottomed out at 1F, and below freezing for a week. It's got a good trunk going. I wonder what can do it this thing in! How unusual is it to survive this far north and inland?

To uncover or not

Hello everyone! I am curious as to what to do regarding some of my Palms. In this case I am wondering about my Washingtonia robustas. They are in boxes covered with foam board insulation and the trunk is wrapped with C9 lights on a thermostat. Looking at the forecast in my area (Frankfort, KY) we are going to see temps well above freezing with just a few days right around the 32F mark. I was wondering if I should remove most of the panels except for the roof. I could always put them back on but was wondering if you all think I should wait or not. I will leave the lights around it. I would waif until after the weekend for any of this. Thanks again.

Before/After Growth Thread!

Hey everyone! My favorite part of reading through these threads is seeing the initial planted picture and then a picture year's later with the palms growth. I was figuring we could gather up a before/after thread for some inspiration coming into the spring season! I posted this in the cold hardy section as I'm in zone 7 so it's more my speed, but any before/after pics in your yard are welcome

Someone else posted a topic similar recently I couldn’t find it or I would have just posted there. Anyway bought this a a palmetto a few years back and planted it, definitely not a palmetto, pretty sure it’s just a minor. The leaves started looking crappy and stopped growing…noticed a random fan leaf poking out of the ground away from where this was planted. I already decided I was going to dig it up. Here it is, weirdest Sabal activity I’ve seen in personThat’s the position it was growing in the ground That massive Sabal “egg” the size of a softball but hard as a rockPotted it in this big 25 gallon pot, seems super healthy below the soil line, we’l…

Sabal minor "taliaferro"
by N8ALLRIGHT- 4 replies

Anyone growing these? The late night eBay impulse forced me to purchase this. It's a minor from a similar latitude as mcurtain, Cherokee and warren so should hold good cold resistance. But the real draw is it's supposedly very blue. The problem is that there isn't much info or pictures available. I've received the seeds, they look like sabals,so let's see if they turn into nice blue palms. I paid at least double what I should for minor seeds, but if the seeds are legit it's worth it. I pmd @Bigfish he confirmed that they exist and were indeed very blue. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't chasing a Sabal "Fargo" or some other made up plant . Only pics I have are from the lis…

Chicago 2024 Exotic Garden Thread

So straight to the point, I'm trying to find some mature plumerias for sale, anyone know if there are any for sale? Also is musa ingens, or mekong giant banana cold hardy to my zone, most sources say zone 6 and up so it seems like it would do, and it has massive edible fruit. Also any other suggestions for what "tropical" flair I should add this year to accompany the Butia palm I'm planning to plant.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about doing a thread highlighting the palms growing in and around Myrtle Beach. Of course the area is littered with sabals but I wanted to focus on the butia, washingtonia, trachy, phoenix, etc. that are sprinkled around. There are some well established, mature trees around here that look like they've been doing well for many years. Question is, would you guys rather have the posts broken up by type of palm or just throw everything into the same thread? Let me know and I'll start throwing pics up. Thanks!

What temp to start planting?

Hey everyone! I've got 5 windmill palms anxiously awaiting spring time to get into the ground. I was wondering roughly what daytime/night time temps do you guys consider to start outdoor planting? I'm in zone 7A, and my 10 day forecast is showing highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. This is always subject to change but if the forecast continues to trend warmer, when would you consider putting windmills in the ground? I am prepared to cover/protect if a cold snap occurs. Thanks in advance!

So I ended up putting some seedlings in ground that I couldn’t keep in my house, and they went through the srtic blast that brought it down to -3f and 8 days below freezing (I put a bunch of mulch on them). I don’t expect them to survive but it would be pretty interesting if they did, lol. All of them are Sabal Causiarum and one Washy hybrid. (The one above was right next to my Needle Palm) (Bad quality picture, I know)

Hi In march 2023 I've planted one double trunk palm looking very much like Butia as trunk, although a bit slender ,but still Butia the leaves were different though.. Very arching ,down and aside ,long ,thin segments ! It may have Siagrus geen in it but I m not sure A guy from Belgium said.. it may be reversed cross Butia Yatay x some Siagrus and Butia again Or cross between Yatay and Eriospatha What I know is that are grown from seeds in South Italy Now they are painted in South Bulgaria zone 7 a-b I'll be grateful and happy to know more about this palms variety because it's very unusual looking and cold hardy …

Diminutive palms

Since I'm running out of space for full-sized trees in my yard my interest has been slowly turning to smaller species that I can use to fill in the gaps. There's the obvious S. Minors, chamaedorea, etc but I'm hoping someone could recommend some more obscure small palms that may be z9 hardy, even if it's a slight zone push. I just ordered seeds for Phoenix Acaulis which fits the undersized bill, but can't find much info online regarding proven hardiness. I have been searching for Brahea Decumbens but the only one I can find for sale is at Jungle Music and it's $145 for a 3gal. I'm hoping I can find one a little cheaper as I don't know for sure if they'll like the humi…

Any idea where I can find these palms in a decent size? Seeds and tiny seedlings probably take forever to grow. Anywhere I can find a gallon or so? That would probably be easier to establish.

Currently November 15 2023, and the winter rain has decided to shower down on Zone 10A/B Tustin, California in Orange County. Using soil heating cables in the pot of my Coconut palm (Panama Pacific Tall variety) IMG_6496.MOV IMG_6496.MOV , todays addition of christmas lights for extra warmth has made its way into my garden. Here’s a silly video showing my coconut getting ready for this upcoming winter! (there’s an umbrella over the coconut so it’s not overwatered) 😛

Hello, I am new to this website and I am pretty new to palm trees. I live in zone 7a North Ohio and I have a dwarf palmetto tree (Sabal minor) and a Sago palm. I had these grown completely unprotected for the past 2 years, but now they are getting brown. The dwarf palm has brown on the leaves and the sago palm is completely brown. It was 7 degrees F this morning. What should I do?

Palm leaves turning green again?

Here's my Sabal Guatemalensis before the cold event this year here in Central Texas. Looking good. I did end up protecting it as I had a big piece of frost cloth left. When I unpacked my Sabal Guatemalensis a few days ago, I had mixed feelings. The ends of the large fronds (up to a feet) had turned completely white! Not yellowish. Very, almost bright white (unfortunately, I did not take a picture of this). Though I was glad this was mostly cosmetic damage, I was disappointed that a large portion of the fronds may need to be cut. I assumed that when leaves turn white after a cold event, the cells are damaged and the discoloration would be permanent. Much t…

Fan Palms for Ohio

Hello. I have been researching online and here, for information about a large, cold tolerant fan palm, but there has never been any testing in my area or a colder Zone 7a. I am planning to plant a Washington Filifera or Brahea palm tree in my yard. I have a large 6ft Jelly Pindo Palm that survived for 5 years and is still alive, here in North Ohio with absolutely no protection except good placement and sometimes a blanket. What are the chances of a large Palm like Washington Filifera will survive, and hopefully grow to 20-30 ft tall? Do you recommend any other palms that have a better chance of living here other than dwarf small palm trees and the bad looking windmill pal…

Finally! A Needle Palm 1 2
by Manalto- 57 replies

Today I planted a nice Rhapidophyllum hystrix that I got from my local nursery here on the Gulf Coast. It was in a 15 gallon pot and it's got about a foot of trunk. I chose it because all the needle palms were growing in the same conditions (high overhead canopy) and this one seemed the most robust and open in habit, which I attribute (erroneously?) to seedling variability. It now occupies a position of honor where I can see it from the back door. I've wanted a needle palm since I learned about them in 1992 from Dr. Lawrence Crockett, my horticulture professor at The City College of New York. He brought in an article from the New York Times introducing us to this remarkab…
