Backyard paradise in North Texas 1 2

So I've been lurking here and getting involved periodically but haven't officially gotten a chance to say hello. We're just north of Dallas and build our dream pool and backyard last year (still have more to do) and with that, I've always wanted palms.. We are new to Texas, and where we're from (IL) we'd never be able to have much of anything... so here we are! We have a little bit of land so I'm doing my best to add palms where possible. This will serve as my official progress thread as well. We finished the pool in October, and originally planted five Windmills and three Sabal Texana (small size). Lost one windmill during the storm, jury still out on the Texana…

“Beast” Trachycarpus - none better anywhere. 1 2

I call this one “The Beast”. Probably the best looking representative of the species. Found in the Mississippi neighborhood here in Portland. The tree originally came from the famed plantsman Sean Hogan. Apparently the owner is an elderly lady who does zero for this palm. I think it’s tapped into some sort of reliable water supply perhaps a leaky water or sewer pipe. Enjoy!

Last month while passing thru St. Augustine I collected about 50 seeds from a Phoenix Reclinata. So I cleaned the flesh and soaked 6 in water for 2 days. 3 I just put in a pot and the other 3 I put in wet paper towels sealed in a zip lock. This was on Oct 27. Today had 2 of the 3 sprouted.

Is my Windmill palm dead?
by Tgonzalez37- 22 replies

I have had this windmill palm since last March. I have watered it once a week since after the initial month, where I watered it more. The past 2 months I have noticed the center spear turned brown and stopped growing. Attached is a picture. Is my Windmill palm dead? Is there any way to recover it?

Results are in. 3 queens, 1 dead, 1 with a nasty spear pull today in photo, one with a deformed spear. Bizzy, all look the same. Bizzy is in photo, some foliage damage which has already been removed. No spear pulls or loose spears. They have been producing new fronds over the last month. No protection for any specimen, Bizzy wins in my yard.

Sabal Minor

So I’m pretty impressed and happy with what I got in the mail today! Got my first Sabal Minor, from a place called Northeast Ohio Palms… Not only did they ship this 30lb 7gal Sabal for free, (cheapest 5 gal I’ve had shipped from anywhere was 95$), but it is larger than the photo, very healthy, and from what I can see there are 4 different plants in the pot. Unless this is how they grow? I should be able to separate no problems? I Think $149 with free shipping.l for this specimen is Outstanding. How root sensitive are these things, should I separate or let grow as clump?

There used to be a site where you could compare 2 cities' average weather by seeing overlaying graphs and contrast their average weather like temperatures , rainfall , and a few other weather sats ( a Weather Channel site , I think , called Vacation Planner ) . I hated it when that site went bust for some reason . I enjoyed contrasting my weather vs other cities , or how 2 other cities' weather was different . Well , I think I found another site where you just plug in a couple cities and check out their weather stats . I was always using that Vacation Planner site and I'm glad I can compare places again . It might even help with growing palms and subt…

Palmetto growth this summer .

I fertilized this pretty hard in July and watered it really well after fertilizing it and it has put out 8 new full fronds and has other new partial fronds and spears . I can count the fronds for 1 season easily because those fronds that are sagging down were weighted down by a wet snow last winter . Palmettos can grow relatively fast when they are happy . Will

Early Winter

I’m looking at my forecast for Vashon Island Wa. and it’s not looking so great… looks like winter arriving early. I can’t remember the last time we saw 20s in early/mid nov. I’m hoping this isn’t a sign of what’s to come this winter. I think December 18th first frost last year, lookin like next week might freeze pretty good. Daytime temps not terrible I suppose but lots of wet too.

Here are my two mediumish mules that I got from the defunct TCHP about 4 years ago as seedlings. They’ve finally reached the size where they are picking up speed. Overall height is 4ft+. My neighbor has one that’s taller than me that I’ll try and post a photo of this weekend. His came from San Antonio.

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on getting my windmill palm to live through a Colorado winter. I’m in zone 5b. Here is my current set up. I have a 4 inch layer of mulch with a heat cable on the surface and wrapped around the trunk and covered with burlap. There are also lights on the outside that put off a little heat. The plastic layer on the shelter is 4 mil. Thanks (p.s it’s cold here!)

Transplanting a C. Humilis Cerifera
by Keys6505- 1 follower

I was offered this pretty good sized Cerifera with the caveat that I have to remove it myself ASAP. This thing sailed through 15 degrees with zero damage so I'm all over it (it's also much more blue in person). So barring any rain I'll probably try to get this done tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. Does anyone have any tips for transplanting a Chamaerops? This one seems to be almost entirely shade grown so I'm assuming I'd have to protect it from the sun until it starts to recover? A few threads I found on the topic seemed to just fade off without any resolution. Any help would be appreciated!
