Dark patches from cold…

See this most years on a bunch of sabals I’ve got. Get these dark patches on the leaves that fade back to normal usually after a warmer day with sun. This has never ended up permanently affecting the leaves, like turning brown prematurely, they always go back to normal green. Seems early and temps are too warm to happen. Usually see this occur when we have dips into single digits. Anyone else see this??

23F Observations
by ahosey01- 4 replies

Hey everyone - In this recent run of cold mornings, we have seen 25F, 26F, 25F and last night, 23F here in Wickenburg. Daytime highs have consistently been in the mid-60s and low-70s. I have a Davis VantagePro 2 that is measuring this directly in the middle of my garden. Some interesting observations (some palms, some not - didn't want to make two threads): Only two plants have sustained heavy damage. One was Beccariophoenix alfredii, which is not dead but which just looks horrible and so I'll probably not be keeping. The other was not a palm, but was Mimosa dysocarpa, which shocks me because it is native to 6000ft+ elevation here in Arizona. I can't qu…

Tips for improving my Trachy fortunei
by Almisa- 5 replies

I am in northern Florida and have had this Trachy has been in the ground since March 2022. It has grown some and seemed happy. I feed and water along the same regimen as an adjacent Robellini, queen and copernicia alba. Over the last month, these extremely brown/black tips have developed and appear to me to be getting worse (it may just be my worry imagination). Thoughts from anyone?

Hello everyone, just made my first post and figured I’d introduce myself. Really got into palming a couple years ago and now that I’ve got the space I’ve gone a little “nuts”. I cheated and imported two large Florida Sabal Palmetto. The smaller tree next to is 8-9ft Queen I’m going to try to keep going with heavy protection (it’s under canopy, will also wrap over lights and have large covers for fronds. Hoping favorable microclimate (on a lakeside peninsula) will help. I’ll consider it a win if it survivors a couple winters. Have also planted 4-5 filifera, couple Sylvester, a CIDP, two bismarck, sabal minor, European fan, needle and saw palmetto. Chinese windm…

Wild S. Minor on MD Eastern Shore?
by Saltydog- 2 followers

I spoke with a Maryland game warden yesterday who told me that he found a grove of apparently wild sabal minor growing in the woods in Dorchester County near the town of Hurlock (Eastern Shore / Delmarva Peninsula - Zone 7A). I find this to be somewhat implausible, as it’s my understanding that the nearest naturally occurring S Minor is on Monkey Island in northeast NC about 100 miles south. I’m not even aware of S Minor occurring in Dismal Swamp at the VA-NC border (only unsubstantiated reports). Perhaps someone spread some seed? Anybody else heard of such a thing?

I live in the south of England and this is the first winter here for my palms. We are having a cold snap and I've put my palms against the wall of my flat in a patio alcove. There is shelter from above and three sides. I've wrapped them with horticultural fleece. We had-2°C last night and are likely to get temperatures just a few degrees lower during the winter. The patio faces south and even in the middle of winter gets warmed by the sun. What are the chances of my palms surviving? Comments or advice will be much appreciated. Paul.

The first palm is Beccariophoenix Alfredii Palm, the second palm is ARCHONTOPHOENIX CUNNINGHAMIANA, and the third palm is Syagris romanzoffiana.

T. Nanital x Fortunei
by steve617- 0 replies

About 2 or 3 years I bought a few Trachycarpus from the UK. Mostly hybrids. Anyway wanted to share a few pics. These are Nanital x Fortunei I have 4 or 5 of these. I've never had the Nanital. The one trait I've noticed they have thick trunks. Not sure if the cross would be any more cold hardy than a reg fortunei. They are a faster growing.

Cold resistant Phoenix?

Hello everybody, I wanna discuss Phoenix dactylifera or canariensis and their cold resistance. Do you think that is possible to train a palm from small seedling to survive cold weather (like -15°C)? I wanna try experiment with small Phoenix seedlings: I will let 'em out in colder temperatures to develope cold resistance. Do you think that I have some chance?

Yellow spots on Mexican Fan Palm
by SALOttawa- 1 reply

Hey there! A friend of mine whom I gave a young Mexican Fan Palm has sent me a picture of their palm. It has yellow spots on the fronds and they were wondering what this might be. The palm was outside, in Ottawa Canada, all summer and was brought in for the winter. Any ideas on why this is happening?

How would you protect a palm outdoors if its in a pot?

Winter is here and I have a trachy that I would like to protect, but it is in a pot, and I am looking for good ways to protect it, as for now all I have is a garbage bag over it from wind chill. I know its hardiness is lowered by being potted compared to the ground.

Hi everyone, Does anybody know what this queen palm is missing? The spots been on the fronds since I would say 4 months . It grows fine but even the new fronds show signs of yellow spots . Planted it in May this year. We have clay soil and I fertilized it about 2 months ago . In the hot summer I water it 2 to 3 times a week now I'm down to 1 time a week since it's colder and we finally receive more rain in SoCen Texas.

Anybody know if Trachys can be found in tropical places like Hawaii (Dry like Kona or wet like Hilo) or Miami? This is more of a random question that came to my head. My guess is 'no' due to constant heat and no cold breaks. Apparent they don't so well in FL because of nematodes down there. (Per the thread below) Happy Friday

These are my latest acquisitions... all 3 are blue colored when mature. Brahea decumbens is a bushy multi-branched palm, and fairly rare. B. clara is very rare, hard to find anything but seeds on the market (I've got those too, if I can get them to germinate hehe). Brahea super silver is a bit easier to find; like decumbens, it is green when small, but can be very blue/silver when larger, especially if grown in bright sunlight. The clara is a 15 gallon plant and about 6 feet tall; the others are 5 gallon. Got them at JungleMusic.net; they're having their fall/winter sale right now so prices were a bit lower than usual. All 3 are very cold hardy (and the clara al…

Young Sabal Mexicana

Hi everyone, Today I've planted a texas sabal mexicana in the front yard. According to the internet they're very slow growing . Since this little fellow isn't growing in the wild would the growth rate be faster? Don't really want to wait 10 to 15 years for the trunk to be visible but if that's the case I'll planted it in the wild.

Puerto Rican hat palm
by Manalto- 21 replies

This is probably the one millionth question that's been asked about the rate of growth of sabal palms but I just can't help myself. About a year ago, I bought a Sabal causiarum from North Texas Cold Hardy. It was mail order, so quite small. Since then, it's produced a couple of leaves, and is now about 4 feet tall at the highest leaf tip. It's planted among naturalized Sabal minor (the foliage on the left) that are growing throughout the shady areas of my property. This spot gets plenty of light, with dappled shade from high branches of a live oak in the middle of the day. We've had a nice warm, wet summer (nothing unusual for the Gulf Coast) which I imagine has hel…
